According to the Webster's English dictionary personas are "individual's social facades" and the root of the word person comes from the Latin word persona, which in their language means mask. Masks have been around for thousands of years. They come in many shapes and sizes, the most well known masks are physical masks. As described in "why do people make masks?" (Sparkers), they have many uses, such as protection or preservation of memories. Masks allow the wearer to mask their true identity. Most of the time these masks are virtual, although often present they can not always be detected. No matter what shape they may take, they always have the same purposes, and when referring to virtual masks, it's often to hide the wearer's true self and bend reality to his or her biddings.

Knowing that almost everyone has hid behind a mask at one point or another, a question that can be raised is to what extent is reality tainted by the presence of masks in literature and society. The presence of various facades, such as the masks of Pride, Courage, and Hypocrisy, often taint reality due to the superficial environment they influence the characters to live in. We can witness this in different literary sources such as Shadow Play A novel by Charles Baxter as well as in society today.

The first mask that tends to taint the reality the characters live in is the mask of Pride. In Shadow Play, we see this mask worn by various characters. We also see characters like Willy in Arthur Miller's play as well as other characters in various books wear this mask. Wyatt, in Baxter's novel is the first character showing evidence of this mask. This facade is transparent when Wyatt gets a tattoo in order to conceal the pain caused by his cousins death. His embarrassment to show his true feelings demonstrates the mask of pride. He is not the only one, however, that uses pain in order to sustain his pride. One can see the same phenomenon in novels such as Find me by Rosie O'Donnell or The Luckiest Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron. Characters in both of these novels seek pain in order to not have to deal with their emotions due to the persona of pride they have been raised to wear. Showing their feelings would show a weakness to their facade which is why they seek to conceal it with superficial pain.

Never can Escape Work

On August 14th, on the day of the biggest blackout recorded in the United States, I was working. I work at Chianti IL Restaurant, in Saratoga Springs. It is one of the major restaurants in Saratoga.

I was working in the back of the restaurant, and suddenly the lights turned off, and than a minute later the lights turned on again. I thought to my self that it was just a malfunction, but than it happened again, and continued to do it about 5 more times. At this time our security alarm was going off, our cooks were mad because they could not prep there food because nothing worked, and everyone was wondering what was going on.

Than suddenly the power turned back on, but only at half power, than 10 minutes later we were back to full power, this occurrence all happened an hour before the restaurant opened, so there were no customers in the restaurant at this time. Everyone in my work just thought it was a local power outage, nothing significant. One waiter thought a car hit an electric pole, while other people thought squirrels bit through an electrical line.

So I went on with my work duties, and when I went outside to go get something from my car, I saw that all the traffic lights were not working, and everyone in there cars were frustrated and angry because the traffic was not progressing smoothly. I went next door to Stewarts to buy a drink, and there power was off, and they were giving out free ice cream because there freezers weren't working. I than went across the street to Dunkin Donuts to get a bagel, and there power was off also. My work than called there other restaurant to see if they had power, and they did not.

We were the only restaurant in town with power. All of the employees were angry because they wanted to get sent home. The cooks turned on the radio while they were prepping food, and that is when all of us found out what was happening. The radio announcer told us that there was a power outage from Canada, to Detroit, all the way down pass New York City. August 14th was the busiest day my work ever had, we had a hour wait, people were waiting, inside, outside, and all around the building. The Gill Store

The store was full of old memories. The second I walked into The Gill Store, I felt a gust of old yet rich air blowing onto my face, enchanting my mind, triggering my childhood memories. The first thing that caught my attention was the storekeeper and her personality. Susie was always very positive and kind, the most interesting part of her, however, were her exciting stories of the store. Her words mesmerized my thoughts, drawing me into her world, the world of The Gill Store.

The cuckoo clock on the far wall rang just as we stepped into the store, its sound so sharp yet so gentle. It was time for school, I repeatedly reminded myself. "Yat-chiu, hurry up or you'll miss the school bus again!" echoed grandma. The sound of the alarm clock kept ringing, but it had failed once again in waking me up. Its sound was too gentle and soothing for an alarm clock. As I struggled out of bed, I'd never forget to check on my old pal Mickey Mouse. He was sleeping safe and sound, just like Tim, my younger brother. The store was full of antique-looking objects an old typewriter, old cash register, antique phone, and toys that even adults would fiddle with. The store was full of reminders of the good old days, as for me, it reminded me of my childhood memories.

The sight of grandma's walking stick instantly sent my lower body nerves twitching vigorously. The slower it took for me to wake up, the harder grandma would beat me with her old , wrinkled walking stick. Her walking stick was a symbol of her high rank in our family. She was the head, and she took care of all the family affairs (apart from the income). Her walking stick had a very distinctive quality, its handle had a fossil of a special flower preserved in amber. The body was made of fine wood that would never break, no matter how hard she hit. The flower in the handle was grandma's icon, and it was also my worst nightmare. My muscles kept twitching to the sight of the hanging walking-stick in The Store.

I can remember watching the television show, Leave it to Beaver, in the good old days. Watching Mr. Cleaver go off work, while Mrs. Cleaver stayed home and took care of the household chores, (i.e. cleaning, cooking, washing, and occasionally gardening). When Mr. Cleaver returned at the end of the workday, the entire family would sit down for the evening meal and have quality time together. Because of the rapid shift in the economy, todays families are affected financially. Both members are required to hold down part time, if not full time jobs in order to avoid unforeseen financial hardship. The family as a unit is finding very little or no quality time to spend together, due to both parents working.

The economy has changed drastically in recent years. Wage increases are not keeping up with the economy; stocks plunder, and goods go up. With only one parent working in a two-parent household, they are finding it almost impossible to shoulder the full financial burden alone. This has put a heavy strain on the family, forcing them to dip into their savings in order to maintain a substantial household net. Finally outings are becoming a thing of the past, because only one parent is working and forced to put in a great deal of overtime. The point is; because of globalization, factories closing, and downsizing, this has put families into a financial pressure cooker.

Businesses are trying to put family back into family by adopting some form of a relief program for both parents in a household that are working and by offering childcare facilities in the workplace. They also have family day and have cut back on the number of days of the workweek, by using the 4-40 program which means four days, forty hours. These are some of the ways that companies are trying to make more time for the family to spend together and not jeopardizing the company goal.

In my opinion, there should be government regulations in the form of a cap, similiar to the one used in sports Ithe salary cap), on businesses that choose to close and move overseas. It should be in the form of an import, with a limit on items that they are allowed to ship back into the country, and higher taxes. This would make them think hard about packing up and leaving, while the American Family is in such a financial crisis.

ESTABLISHING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

When we talk about the purposes of education we may be referring to purposes at one or more of the following levels nation, state, school district, school, and subject? Grade, unit plan, or lesson plan. Although there is no perfect agreement, most educators use the terms goals and objective to distinguish among levels of purpose with goals being broader and objectives being more specific. All end points however are influenced by social forces and by prevailing philosophies or theories of education. Social forces and philosophies combing to shape the goals adopted at the national or state level. Changes in society include shifts in emphasis amount the various influences such as the family, peer groups, social class and the economy.

Although goals are important guides in education, they cannot be directly observed or evaluated; rather, they are broad statements that denote a desired and valued competency, a theme or concern that applies to education in general. Sometimes the most general goals are called aims. Goals or aims are formulated at the national and state levels, often by prestigious commissions or task forces. Goals at the school district level begin to narrow in focus. For example, a school district goal related to the national goal of school readiness might be that "all children will have access to highquality and developmentally appropriate preschool programs that help prepare children for school." Goals at the school level usually narrow in focus even more, translating national, state, and district goals in to statement that coincide more closely either the philosophy and priorities of the local school community. By describing what schooling is intended to accomplish, goals provide a direction, but they are too vague for teachers and students to apply directly in the classroom. Thus for classroom use, goals must be translated into more specific objectives.

Objectives are generally written at three levels of instruction subject/grade level, unit plan level, and lesson plan level. In practice, most educators at the classroom level organize instruction with a combination of general and specific objectives in mind. General objectives are characterized by "end" terms such as to know, learn, understand, comprehend, and appreciate. At the level of the individual lesson plan, objectives usually become very specific.

A Good Man is Hard to Find is consistent with Mary Flannery OConnors view that contemporary society was drastically changing for the worse. In Good Country People, the center stage is taken by a wooden-legged philosopher named Hulga who claims to be an atheist and the resident expert on nothingness. OConnors obvious displeasure with society at the time has often been attributed to her Catholic religion, her studies in the social science field, and the fact that the celebrated lifestyles of the elite southern whites were Gone with the Wind. Evidence of societys demise is woven into the stories, and presented through an interesting generation gap.

Good Man is Hard to Find on a religious level is the question for this story. The Misfit is a criminal who has lost his faith in God and immortality and who has turned to a life of crime, he wrestles with the question of faith and admits that his behavior would have been different had he had proof that Jesus rose from the dead. The heart of the problem for him is evidence. He also talk about the love and the kindness of his parents

' God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy's heart was pure gold.' This quote is unbelievable in ways because who knows how his mother and daddy really are. Maybe of these words will make him feel better when he do the killings Speaking of gullibility, the whole family is not very intelligence, been with three guy with guns why the family members seem so clam about it and why the father won't do anything for the family. The grandmother, on the other hand it may be ironic at first that she ask the Misfit to pray for his conversion, but it is still a step toward her recognition of him as a member of her spiritual family--why, youre one of my babies. This concluding moment of grace suspends the action under a surreal sky that hangs over the murdered bodies--perhaps a moments for the readers to reflected on the significance of the phrase A Good Man Is Hard to Find. The Misfits unexpect comment on the grandmother is a last ironic reminder of this title. She would of been a good woman, if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.
