Euthanasia is the practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition by means of lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. The history of euthanasia dates back for centuries, but it wasnt until 106 when the first bill to legalize euthanasia in America was introduced in the Ohio legislature. For several years, legislatures have been turning down bills aimed at the legalization of euthanasia in the United States. In 17, the Nebraska legislature voted down a bill legalizing voluntary active euthanasia in the U.S. Only two years later, the New York legislature rejected a bill that was also aimed at the legalization of euthanasia in the United States. In 11 the Washington State Initiative Bill legalizing voluntary euthanasia was narrowly defeated. (6) In 14, Oregon passed a law to allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs, but an injunction prevented it from taking effect.

As of today, euthanasia is illegal in almost every country. In fact, it is only legal in the state of Oregon and the Netherlands. These are the only two places in the world where laws specifically permit euthanasia or assisted suicide. Oregon permits assisted suicide while the Netherlands permits both euthanasia and assisted suicide. In 15, Australias northern territory approved a euthanasia bill which went into effect in 16, but it was overturned by the Australian Parliament in 17. Also, in 17, Columbias Supreme Court ruled that penalties for mercy killing should be removed.(4) This ruling will not go into effect though until guidelines are approved by the Columbian Congress.

In Belgium, lawmakers have agreed on the provisions of a key article in a draft proposal to legalize euthanasia. The proposed bill would not only allow doctors to euthanasia terminally- ill patients, but also those who are incurably ill with years left to live. (4) In Michigan, the assisted suicide ballot initiative was defeated due to television ads who are now shifting gears to focus on alternatives to assisted suicide such as hospice care. Advocates for assisted suicide in Michigan are releasing their own radio and television ads in attempt to counter the anti-proposal ads.

Many court cases have come out of the heated topic as well. While the first euthanasia case in Japan was in 14, it wasnt until 16 that the Nagayo Court created a criteria for lawful active euthanasia. The court concluded if six conditions could be fulfilled, a death should be admitted as lawful euthanasia. (6) In 176, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in the Karen Ann Quinlin case that she had the right through her family to refuse life-sustaining treatment. In 181, A Rotterdam court ruled on conditions under which aiding suicide and administering voluntary euthanasia will not be prosecuted. The Supreme Court of the Netherlands declared that voluntary euthanasia is acceptable subject to ten clearly defined conditions in 184, and in 1 the Netherlands passed a law which prevented doctors from being prosecuted when certain guidelines are followed. In 14, Oregon passed a law to allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs, but an injunction prevented it from taking effect. Also in 14, delegates from the National Peoples Congress in the Republic of China, proposed a law in support of euthanasia. (6) In 15, Australias Northern Territory Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill by Marshall Perron was instated which allowed euthanasia under careful controls. In 15, Singapore introduced a right- to-die law which was originally sought after not to legalize euthanasia but to give the terminally ill the right to make a living will.

In this paper I will discuss the issue of African American men's portrayal in Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye. I will talk about the issues of how Morrison's book perpetuates curtain stereotypes and also provides negative images of African American men. I will also go into the discussion of how after perpetuating men in such a negative light, how her book doesn't challenge the negative stereotypes she presented. I will draw on specific examples as to my opinions of the book to support my view.

For as long as I can remember African Americans have been portrayed in a negative light, from being disobedient violent slaves, thought of as nothing more than savage beasts of the early days of slavery, to the present violet crazed nymphomaniac they are portrayed to be today. In Morrison's book The Bluest Eye, every male mentioned is followed with a negative description of the events of their life, and the negative outcome "they" produce because of it. Even the opening of the book started out with the mentioning of Pecola's father Cholly being the father of her baby started out with portraying him as a sex fiend obsessed by sex and putting negative ideas into the readers head. I feel that the opening set the stage for a negative spin on how African American men were to be portrayed throughout the story. I feel that the throughout the book the story had a pessimistic undertone of how it portrayed all the African American male charters.

I felt that even in the case when an African American character's introduction to the story was a pleasant entrance it would later lead to a contradiction supporting a negative stereotype of how black men are generally perceived. For example, when Mr. Henry was introduced to the story, he was introduced to the reader as a pleasant man who came in the autumn and became a "roomer" to Claudia and Frieda's family. His opening was pleasant. He was described as living with Miss Della Jones on Thirteenth Street taking care of her after "that old crazy nigger she married up with", "run off with that trifling Peggy from Elyria". Mr. Henry's introduction to the story made him seem like a real winner. When the women talked about him they said things like "Henry ain't no chicken" describing him as brave, the also said " he ain't no buzzard, either", they also talked about why he hadn't married anyone in the area and suggested that there wasn't anyone good enough. They described him as a "sensible man and a steady worker with quiet ways," Later on, this was all to be contradicted. The story later portrayed Mr. Henry as a pervert; he had dirty "girly magazine" and slept with whores.

The mentioning of how Mr. Henry came to be a roomer in Claudia and Frieda's house also leads to a negative perception of African American men. The talk of Miss Della's husband, and how when asked why he left a "nice good church woman" like Della, for that "heifer" Peggy, his answer was "the honest-to-God real reason was he couldn't take no more of that violet water Della Jones used." He said "he wanted a woman to smell like a woman." All this made him seem like a filthy man that liked dirty smelly women. It also made Miss Della seem like an innocent victim. The women in the story that talked about him also said the he was the cause of Miss Della's strokes.

Inflation is the general upward trend in the level of prices. Inflation causes the purchasing power of money to fall. Inflation is categorised in two types being demand-pull inflation and cost-push inflation.

One of the main causes of inflation is excess demand. If demand is growing faster than the level of supply, then prices will increase. Output will increase as well, as there is a shift along the aggregate supply curve, but because supply cannot keep up with demand prices go up as well. Demand-pull inflation will therefore occur in a booming economy. To avoid demand-pull inflation the economy should grow at a steady rate.

Cost-push inflation occurs when production costs increase. To maximise their profit, they need to increase their profit. Therefore cost increases have pushed inflation up. Cost-push inflation occurs because of different factors. Wages are a major part of the production costs and if workers demand a wage rise, firms need to increase prices to prevent form losing from increased production costs and therefore causing inflation. Workers may demand a wage increase because of the expectation theory. (They expect something to happen and act in such a way to cause it to happen.) The value of the Australian dollar compared to other currencies is also an important factor especially if businesses use imports in the production process. If other countries have high inflation or the Australian dollar is weak, it causes imported inflation. Increase in interest rates can cause inflation if businesses borrowed money to aid production process. If the government change or add extra tax a business may experience increased production costs and it will lead to inflation. (Implementing of GST caused inflation as products are now more expensive. Australia's latest rate of inflation is around 2.9%, while the inflation rate was about 6% when GST was introduced.) The effect of cost-push inflation is to shift the aggregate supply curve to the left.

Inflation causes problems for individuals as well as for the whole economy. Some causes are: The redistribution of income – a great amount of people live on fixed income, especially pension owners. The higher the level of inflation the less their income will be worth. This also happen among working people, as inflation increases faster than their income. Businesses and individuals would have to face inconvenient costs such as extra administrative work, redo their supply lists, price lists, business and individual budgets etc. Inflation will cause Australia to be less competitive in the export market. If inflation causes prices to be very high, other countries wouldn't compete with Australia causing our goods to be less in demand. This is very important because the export market is very important to the Australian economy. Inflation causes uncertainty for businesses and individuals. Uncertainty causes slower or negative economic growth because business and consumer confidence decrease. (This was recently seen because of 9/11)

Economic Programs That Maintain Income

Welfare was a program first established to help provide food and other necessary items to struggling families. Welfare is a government program that provides money, medical care, food, housing, and other things that people need in order to survive. Although the program was not intended to last forever, it has lasted for decades. Welfare takes a portion of everyone's money, whether a person is poor or rich, and then distributes it to families or individuals in need. The welfare program affects all taxpayers. Welfare programs aim at helping people who are unable to support themselves fully or earn a living. Welfare recipients include elderly people, people with mental or physical disabilities, and those needing help to support dependent children. People in the United States most commonly use the term welfare to refer to government-funded programs that provide economic support, goods, and services to unemployed or underemployed people or it can be considered to be public assistance. Although many people see welfare as a burden, welfare benefits are, indeed, a necessary government program.

To be sure, welfare does have downfalls that affect society. The criticism of welfare ranges over a number of social and economic issues (National 1). Some people criticize welfare programs for not providing high enough benefits to eliminate poverty (National 1). Spending on welfare would have to increase greatly to eliminate poverty, and many people believe the cost is already too high. Many critics of the welfare system state that providing a steady income to needy people encourages idleness (National 1). People on welfare should not be stereotyped as "lazy freeloaders." Many welfare recipients are parents who just can't get ahead. In addition, some children are the victims of teasing because they are receiving welfare. Also, welfare promotes too much independence, which can cause some of the people to always depend on the support of society. Some parents can work, but they can also be lazy and if they can get on welfare, then they will try to stay on it. They refuse to take their share of responsibility and believe that welfare must help them. Welfare also sets bad examples for children. Some welfare recipients depend too much and take advantage of welfare. In contrast, other people such as disabled individuals, elders, and single parent deserves to receive some government assistance. However, they do not get as much as they need because the government provides welfare to both deserving and undeserving people. This will create an imbalance between recipients. Those who really need welfare cannot get enough, while others receive more than what they need. Therefore, the government should provide welfare to deserving people who really need assistance and jobs to those who are able to work.

Although welfare does have pitfalls, it does benefit society by helping the disabled and supporting them. Disabled people with a low income rely on Disabilities Living Allowance to be able to afford the basic living expense (Division 1). Welfare provides stability to a family. Welfare also gives a family a portion of money a month to assist with financial needs. Welfare gives hope to families who do not have any by allowing them a chance to get ahead. A family knowing that they are going to receive assistance when they need it tends to boost morale, thus helping an individual to keep working their way out of poverty.

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn these are the great yet true words from Joseph Addison. The author John Steinbeck was a man, who portrayed a nation during its worst period if time telling about the struggles of its people in Of Mice and Men, and in the novel The Pearl. Both stories were brilliantly written with the unique trademark of John Steinbeck. In the novel Of Mice and Men, the characters Lennie and George are two intellectuals of very different intelligence levels; who stumble upon a job at a ranch that got ruined by Lennie's innocence. The novel The Pearl is folklore of how much a mans life could be consumed by a beautiful stone thatll cause so much hatred and sorrow within him. John Steinbeck has designed his own writing style based thru his detailed descriptions, and brilliant technique of foreshadowing, symbolism, and as well figurative language, all in which that makes him a great writer.

The striking ability of John Steinbeck's foreshadowing in his books is remarkable. "`A mouse? A live mouse?' `Uh-uh jus' a dead mouse, George. I didn' kill it honest I found it dead.' " The killing of the mouse is the first example of foreshadowing in the story that foretells the tragedy at the end of the book. Eventually the object being killed grows from a small fragile mouse to a helpless woman (Steinbeck 1, pg.4). When Coyotito gets stung by the scorpion it gets the story going as well as foreshadows that Coyotito is going to die (Steinbeck ). "Jus' wanted to touch the dress, Gorge" This phrase repeated it self four times. This clued us in to the part where he killed Curley's wife (Steinbeck 1). The indirect suggestion of each of his books by the end makes one realize it all ties up together.

One of the greatest objects in the novels of John Steinbeck is symbolism; significance of objects, events or relationships that make a story a whole and by the end you realize it was all meant to happen. The outfit Kino to wears was white and as Kino was going to fight he took off his clothes. The color white represents the pureness and innocence of Kino; when he took it off he was stripped the last of his innocence. The pearl had taken the rest of it (Steinbeck ). "George unslug his bundle and dropped it gently on the bank `I aint sure its good water' he said `Look kinda scummy'… …Lennie dabbed his paw in the water… he admitted it doesn't seem to be running." The water not running and being "bad" was after Lennie touched it and polluted it. Also the river stopping symbolized how eventually his life was going to stop in this journey. Steinbeck used many symbols that can be taken as just simplistic and normal, however it has a deeper levels of symbolism.

The usage of figurative language in the story made the stories more attractive and alive. One of the most graphic parts in Of Mice and Men is when Lennie breaks Curley's wife's neck imagines her squirming, and fighting like there was no more air. "…the body flopped like a fish…" In a way that was her way of battling for her life but she couldn't the power to Lennie was too overwhelming (Steinbeck 1, pg. 1). "… slowly like a terrier…" There are many comparisons to animals linked to Lennie however the terrier describes him. He acts like an incompetent object, however when he gets scared he starts to attack and protect him self like his animal instincts tell him to (Steinbeck 1, pg ) "Lennie…creeping with bear like moves…" This physical description of is beast like figure, big and fearful look yet at the same time so clumsy (Steinbeck 1)The usage of figurative language in a novel makes us go beyond human characteristic and make us go to our primitive side.

Whether or not homosexuality is biological has never been scientifically proven. Recently, however, there have been more studies that suggest it is not biological. According to Dr. Moberly 85%-0% of lesbians were victims of sexual abuse (Berean League, 11). A man or woman?s sexual preference is determined by a stimulus that causes a responsive behavior. Homosexuality is, therefore, learned. Research has not found enough evidence to say that people are ?born gay?.

Although, at times, studies show that homosexuality may be inherited, after careful observations the study has usually been discounted. No researcher has found any difference between a heterosexual male and a homosexual male that was not caused by their behavior. This says that there are differences, but those differences were responses to a specific stimulus. Even homosexuals themselves say that their sexual preference was the result of social or environmental influences. In 18, the Family Research Institute conducted an experiment with ,400 homosexuals. Eighty percent of those men said that their homosexuality was learned (Cameron, 1).

Researchers have now also reported that sexual conduct is influenced by cultural factors- especially religious convictions. Reports show that there is less homosexual activity among all religiously active groups than in groups that are not religiously active. Men and women raised in homes where religion is not a big factor are four times more likely to become homosexuals than those who were raised in homes where religion is important. What this research demonstrates is that when people believe that homosexuality is wrong they are less likely to become homosexuals (Cameron, 1).

?In a large random sample 88% of women currently claiming lesbian attraction and 7% of men claiming to currently enjoy homosexual sex, said that they had been sexually aroused by they opposite sex? (Cameron, 1, pg 4). When 04 random men where asked questions about their sex lives, it was reported that less than 1% of men had only had sex with men during their lives. Most homosexual men have been sexually aroused by, had sexual relations with, and have even fallen in love with someone from the opposite sex. These studies are illustrating how it is not biological because many of these men and women are also attracted to a member of the opposite sex. Many homosexuals can change their sexual preference (Cameron, 1).

Probably the research that best shows that homosexuality can not be biological is the fact that there are many ex-homosexuals. There are homosexuals who have been gay for several years and then chose not only to change their habits, but the object of their desire. Some reasons for this change can be the result of psychotherapy or religious conversions. In 184, a study reported that almost % of heterosexuals considered themselves to be homosexuals at one point in their lives. If, in fact, homosexuality was biological then these men and women ?born gay? could never change sexual preference, but studies show that many men and women have changed and become heterosexuals. That shows that homosexuality can not be biological (Cameron, 1).

Many scientists are still baffled by the cause of homosexuality. Whether homosexuality is biological or not has never been scientifically proven, but recently more studies demonstrate that people who are homosexuals are not ?born gay?. Many things can cause homosexual desire. Any homosexual experience, family abnormality, or unusual sexual experience can cause homosexual desire. Even a man or a woman?s culture can affect their religious preference. Research shows that homosexuality is not biological, and it can be changed.

In the Theban plays, Oedipus's fate and free will was destined at the beginning

by the oracle's tale. Throughout the plays, Oedipus finally realizes that free will would

not stop fate from happening. As the plays unfold, no matter what's done or said to

change the events, fate is always predestined.

Cheap essay writing service offers papers on Oedipus Rex

Fate in the Webster's Dictionary states that fate is "the principle or determining

cause or will by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events

to happen as they do." Oedipus's parents thought they were doing the right thing, by

sending him with the shepherd to die. At the time they did not realize that they could

not change fate by their own free will. Oedipus realizes this at Colonus when he said his

parents did this to me so now I have to suffer because I was destined for doom.

Furthermore, Oedipus's on display is typical of human nature, even though

the particular situations they face may not be the same we face today. The characters

in Greek drama tend to be characters you know or will some day meet. They will be

your mates, your children, your in-laws, your bosses, and your colleagues. Some of

them have been your teachers. (In Oedipus you might look for remnants of any

principals you might have known in Creon.)

But, most importantly, they will be you. The reason is that there are various

ways that our choices and decisions come back to haunt us, even when we make

reasonable choices from the best possible motivation. (As the Chorus says near

the end of Oedipus at Colonus "no man has ever lived out of the reach of misadventure's

grasping hand.") Often this is because we don't have sufficient knowledge or

understanding of the likely consequences of a choice or action. "Fate" is the word often

used in conjunction with classic Greek literature and drama, but fate in the sense of pre-

determined outcomes is not a perspective held by many Americans today; and I think a

more natural way for us to look at the actions and choices we, or the characters in the

plays, have made.. It is not that one is fated before one makes a choice to have certain

consequences occur; but that certain consequences will inevitably, result from certain

choices and actions.

In conclusion, fate and free will have the same objective to me. For instance,

fate will always come out at the end of any situation. Free will alwaysleads you back

to where your path is ahead. [Just as Jocasta send Lauis try to send Oedipus to die in

the mountain.] [So he wouldn't kill is father and commit incest by marrying his mother.]

Either way, it went, Oedipus live a still kill his father and marry his mother. That scenario

shows you that you cannot control, fate and free will it just to natural to occur. Fate and

free will sound just as they mean, which states the principle of a situation. The concept is

like cause and effect, they both need each other to be completed as a whole. So, therefore,

fate and free will work as a team pulling together for cause and effect. In the Theban

plays, fate and free will played a major part in the three stories, which escalated the plots. Please note that this sample paper on Oedipus Rex is for your review only.
