Cinderella, the classic rags to riches story. Nearly every child knows it. Disney has been capitalizing from its success since it first launched the classic animated story into the world. Cinderella's popularity has been so widespread that there are now Hindi, Korean, and Vietnamese versions of the story, just to name a few alternative languages. In the recent age of feminism and equal rights, Cinderella is an easy target to criticize, especially the role of the protagonist, Cinderella. In critiquing the work, we must also look at the inherent values present in Cinderella herself and may even wish to pose the question to ourselves as to whether the feminist movement has gone a little too far when stories such as Cinderella are blacklisted. While being demeaning to the female gender, the classic fairy-tale Cinderella contains many important values.

Looking at the character of Cinderella herself, one can easily see the demeaning values in the story. Cinderella's place in the family is to cook, clean, and perform household tasks. These chores have typically been reserved for women, which leads to the reader (especially a young girl) believing it the woman's place to perform these tasks. As Cinderella is left behind and ignored during her stepfamily's preparations for the prince's ball, she does not become a powerful, goal-oriented woman but rather "fell a crying" (16). This section of the story reinforces the idea that women are not adept to deal with their own problems, but rather need some stroke of luck to achieve their goals. In order for Cinderella to advance her situation, she needs the help of her fairy godmother. After her fairy godmother transforms her, only then is she able to achieve her goal. This idea of a girl changing who she is to impress men continues even to today, and I shudder to think of how many pre-teen girls wish nightly for their fairy godmother to deliver them to the prince of their dreams (probably directly as a result of seeing Disney's rendition of Cinderella or from seeing Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman). This story also magnifies society's belief that in order for a woman to succeed, she needs a well-suited man to take care of her. Although hardly the strong and powerful character we expect in today's children's stories, Cinderella still contains numerous qualities which should lead parents around the world to rejoice in their daughters' enjoyment of the story.

Cinderella is a good person with strong inner values. Primarily, Cinderella does not exhibit mental unstableness from her terrible condition; rather, she demonstrates complacency in her difficult position. Instead of retreating into a world of continual depression, Cinderella does her best with the situation presented. She manages to maintain hope in a seemingly hopeless situation. Cinderella is a very modest girl, and her stepsisters' traits of being boisterous, rude, and superficial are presented in a negative way, which leads a young reader to also believe these traits are "bad."

Cinderella, although promoting the idea that beauty is ever-important and that a prince is often needed to drag a young woman from her helpless situation, can still provide a stellar role model with strong morals in the young woman, who, against all odds, manages to marry her prince, something many feminists may still be searching for. Is it so wrong to dream of someone who will remove you from all your burdens who is, needless to say, well fitted with great legs and a nice butt? I know enough men who are still searching for their princesses.

Karl Marx made his opinions and beliefs very clear to the world. Through the Communist Manifesto, Marx makes numerous points about Marxism. He also describes his feelings about how the worker is seen and used by society. In the Communist Manifesto, Marx also speaks about what course he sees the dialectic taking.

Marx made four major points in the Manifesto. Historical materialism, class struggle, dialectic, and communists were those four major points. Historical materialism described people think and act was determined by the way in which they made their living. As a result a society's economic system made up its foundation. Also, according to Marx the driving force of history was what people went after for money (the economic change). Another major point was class struggle. Marx classified the two groups that society was broken down into as the bourgeoisie (the haves) and the proletariat (the have nots). Marx believed that political power is merely the organized power of one class for oppressing another. In the Manifesto Marx wrote "It […] has set up that single, unconscionable freedom- Free Trade. In one word for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation." Marx believed that the bourgeoisie made the honored careers of physicians, lawyers, etc. "into just its paid wage-laborers." The bourgeoisie couldn't exist unless it continuously improved the tools of production and everything that was related to the production. Every class struggle was actually a political struggle and the proletariat class was actually a revolutionary class. This was because the other classes would weaken and eventually fade away in modern history while the proletariat is "its special and essential product."

Another of Marx's main points was the dialectic. The dialectic was Hegel's idea that all things travel on a cycle of Anti Thesis against Thesis resulting in a synthesis. What this mean sis that something is challenged by its opposite. Hegel and Marx both believed that revolution was always going and never ended. The Communists were seen by Marx as the "Vanguard of the Proletariat," meaning the proletariat alone was unable to determine what needed to be done. That had to be told and led by the people who "understood the line of march." In addition, the communists were seen as a group that was separate from the general population. "The Communists fought for the attainment of the immediate aims, for the enforcement of the momentary interests of the working class; but in the movement of the present, they also represent and take care of the future of that movement."

Marx believed that the role of the worker was crucial. He felt that the worker was taken advantage of and seen as a piece of machinery. The family of the worker became the economic unit. Poor families must have had many children to make money. They had to provide social security because there was no pension. If a member of the family was hurt then the others had to keep working to bring in the money. "The class of laborers lived only so long as they could find work and who found work only so long as their labor increases capital." Those laborers had to sell themselves piecemeal (piece work) which meant the work was done one piece at a time. "There were commodities and consequently exposed to all the vicissitudes of competition." Marx wrote about how the work of the proletariats had lost all individual character. They became "appendages of the machine [….] The price of a commodity is equal to the price of production. In proportion, as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decreases." The worker was hired to do what was needed, and as soon as that work was done so was the worker. To sum it all up, Marx felt that the worker was seen just as a piece of equipment and society cared nothing for him (the worker).

I am a new student here at Chanel High School, and I thought I would take the time to tell you my thoughts and feelings about this new experience. I have attended public school my entire life, although my parents went through mostly private school, but both graduated from a public school. Although I believe public schools are a good experience, I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. When I was unhappy with my situation, and my surroundings at my previous high school I took the initiative to get out, and that is exactly what I did. It's hard to come into a new school so far into your high school career and expect to be accepted immediately. But I made sure to be nice and not shy and quiet, and tried my best to make new friends. Soon enough, I wasn't to new anymore. People just welcomed me with open arms, into a happy, warm environment. I believe this is a result of the teachers, administrators, parents, and the students all doing their part to reach out. High school is hard, dealing with all the drama that goes on in out teenage lives, I know in ten years I will look back and think about how silly it was to ever worry about such things, but no teenager is different, we all have to same concerns and that's just life. I have noticed that in a private school the quality of people you come across it much higher then those in the public education program, which provides a better environment for students to learn, grow and prosper.

You cannot go a day within the school and not hear, see, or read, "Seek what is above". You cannot go a day within the school without praying this is a nice change. The school lived up to every expectation I had, except one. Recently the school administrators have chosen to dismiss a student a mere days before graduation. I know the story, I know the family, and I also know the boy. He has good intentions, high hopes, and very high standards. He has made the effort to ask from help in classes he is not doing so well in, he has offered many things in return. He works at a camp for mentally disabled children. He has been blessed with the compassion and the patience to work with such precious souls. This is a choice he makes, he doesn't need the money nor want to money he just truly enjoys the children's' company.

As you know he has had some discipline problems, nothing overtly wrong just little slip ups here and there. Things that happen when the pressure of school, family, friends, sports, and all the other stress factors in your life builds up and you have no release. I know he means well, and hopes for the best for everyone, and I truly believe your choice to dismiss him wasn't the best choice to make. I believe it would be fit for most cases, but this one is a little different, there is more hope for him to succeed. With it being the end of March, so close to the end of the school year I have an idea, something that I think he will benefit from, more so then making him leave the school. Make him come back and finish the year out, make him pass all his classes, and make his take all his finals. Keep him active and involved with baseball, and possibly an academic club or two. They say most students do better when they are involved. But let him know that one more detention, on more write up he is gone, no if's, and's, or but's about it. You would have been generous enough to reconsider him, and see the determination he holds with in himself. I know that is only one small voice, but I hope I at least I sparked something inside you. Please take my thoughts into consideration, I honestly feel this boy has more hope within him then was he has chosen to expose.

Thank you for your time it is greatly appreciated. I hope you recognize the compassion I have exerted in this letter. Thank you again.

In 1170 Hollands physical shape was altered by flooding, a devastation that helped to form the Zuider Zee (now the IJsselmeer). William II, count of Holland from 14 to 156, promoted land reclamation, pressed for the maintenance of waterways and dikes, and encouraged municipal development by granting trading privileges to the growing towns of the county.During the succeeding rule of the house of Avesnes, economic prosperity was promoted by extensive land reclamationThe Netherlands, as its name suggests, is a low-lying country. About half of the countrys landmass lies below sea level. This amount would increase should the polar ice caps melt and slowly raise the level of the sea due to global warming. Much of the western part, situated below sea level, is covered with clay and peat soils interspersed with canals, rivers, and arms of the sea. Farther to the east the land lies slightly above sea level and is flat to gently rolling.Empoldering refers to the creation of polders. A polder is a piece of land in a low lying area reclaimed from a body of water by building dikes and by drainage.Empoldering can be carried out in coastal and inland areas such as lakes.Polders are enclosed by dikes to keep out the sea.To prevent the polders from being waterlogged, they are managed by drainage canals and pumps.Dikes protect the polder from erosion.Drainage canals carry away excess water from the polders.lowest lying polders, droogmakerijen, low constant water levels are maintained because of the intensive agricultural use, which is possible because these polders have a clay soil. higher lying polders, veenweides or peat pastures, relatively high constant water levels are maintained. Otherwise, the peat oxidises and the land surface subsides even more. Peat pastures are used for extensive agriculture. They were then used for housing, agriculture and recreational purposes. Then, storms and floods in 116 provided the impetus for the Dutch to start a major project to reclaim the Zuider Zee. From 17 to 1, a 0.5 km long dyke called Afsluitdijk (the Barrier Dyke) was built; turning the Zuider Zee into the IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake. The Zuider Zee could not accommodate the bigger sailing ships that had been just developed. With the Zuider Zee reclamation project, the area had many uses.Portions of the lake were enclosed by dikes and drained to form polders. The Ijssel Lake now serves as a freshwater reservoir, supplying water for the irrigation. Further protective dykes and works were built, reclaiming the land of the IJsselmeer. The new land led to the creation of a the new province of Flevoland. The Zuider Zee Project was so successful that empoldering is now used in many parts of the world to control floods or to increase land supply.Today, approximately 7 percent of the Netherlands is actually below sea level. This area is home to over 60 percent of the countrys population of 15.8 million people. The Netherlands, which is approximately the size of the U.S. states Connecticut and Massachusetts combined, has an approximate average elevation of 11 meters (6 feet). The Netherlands ties Lemmefjord, Denmark for claim to the lowest point in Western Europe - Prince Alexander Polder lies at feet (7 meters) below sea level. Please note that this sample paper on Empoldering in the Netherlands is for your review only. Informal Essay on Angela's Ashes Angela's Ashes is a moving book full of poverty, suffering, and death that shows that no matter how difficult things seem, the hard tines can always be overcome. Angela and Malachy McCourt, both Irish, were married in America after a passionate night together that ended up producing their first son, Francis(or Frank as introduced to the reader). Later, the couple had another son, twins, and a daughter while living in a small apartment in New York. Margaret soon died and the family moved to Ireland where their lives were only worsened. Angela had two more children that lived, but the young twins died. Malachy was an alcoholic who rarely held a job and spent his wages at the pub instead of on his family. They were forced to beg for food and other necessities because relatives were cruel and selfish. This novel tells the tell of young Frank having to endure extreme poverty, starvation, and a broken family with strength and courage. He eventually raises enough money to go to America and break free from his depressing childhood. In my opinion, the theme of this book is that no matter how bad things seem to be, anyone can survive and become successful through perseverance and determination. For example, Frank grew up in just about the worst environment possible but was determined enough to get himself to America and eventually become the author of a Pulitzer Prize winning novel! Frank achieved his goals by taking any extra jobs that he could find and saving every penny possible until he could finally afford his passage to America. Because his father never brought home any money, Frank supported the family with what little wages he earned at his job and was determined to make a good life for himself, his brothers, and his poor mother. Frank learned to depend upon no one but himself and his determination to succeed won him a new life in America where he now lives happily married. I noticed numerous literary devices present throughout the book. One such device is the use of apostrophe. Apostrophe is used continuously when Frank speaks to the angel on the seventh step and also when he and his parents speak to the dead children such as Eugene, Oliver, and Margaret. The story is told from the point of view of Frank as he grows from a young boy of about three or four to a young man at nineteen. This point of view is especially effective because it shows how he feels about his experiences as he ages and how he felt at that exact time. His views change as he grows and his naivete vanishes. He becomes a stronger, smarter person with the reader following along. I also noticed frequent use of imagery. Frank describes his eyes when they are infected with "red and yellow oozing" out of them. Vivid images are also used to describe the putrid smells in their house next to the lavatory that was used by the entire street to empty their chamber pots. McCourt also chooses to write very often in the diction of the old Irish language. This word choice adds to the mood of the book and attempts to bring the reader into Ireland. The book is also packed with humor. For instance, when the boys were playing outside, McCourt said that the women stand because "all they do is take care of the children, clean the house, and cook" but the men sit because the spend their time "discussing the problems of the world and wondering what to do with the rest of the day"(107). This is a humorous, almost satirical look at the traditional male-female roles in a family. Humor is also used while Frank waits for the angel on the seventh step and his naivete as a young boy. McCourt's novel is filled with wonderful, descriptive images that help to shape his fascinating tale from poverty to success. Word Count 66 Please note that this sample paper on Angela Ashes is for your review only. In Manitoba, 6 teenagers become pregnant every day. This gives us one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Canada, 55 pregnancies per 1,000 girls aged 15-1 years (www.thinkagain.ca). What does this say about adolescent sexuality in our province, and even in our community. Why are so many teens sexually active? And are they physically and emotionally ready to have sex? Adolescent sexuality has increased whereas the age of adolescents decreases. There were ,05 pregnancies among 10-1 year olds in 1/000(Teen Sex, 00). Teens are influenced by media (television, music, and magazines), peers, parents, and sex education at school. Unfortunately some of these influences don't talk about the risks of sex, and protection against pregnancy and STI's. The final decision about whether or not to have sex or use birth control is up to the adolescent.

When is it right? Most people make a decision about when to have sex for the first time. Part of the decision is asking questions about many parts of sex. There are also questions about the responsibilities and the risks involved with sex. Sex is a pleasurable and exciting part of life. Some risks and problems of sexual activity that affect the body are unprotected sex, disease, or pregnancy. Being able to communicate about such risks and problems is an equally important part of sexual readiness. A teen who is ready for sexual activity needs to understand STDs and be prepared to prevent their spread. Using condoms during sexual activity can be a healthy choice. Females are biologically more likely than males to get an STD (Sexual Readiness, 000). This is because of the way the female body is built. The germs that cause STDs have more places to linger and cause problems in the female body. They must also understand the risks of sex while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The combination of alcohol and other drugs with sexual activity is dangerous. Using alcohol and other drugs makes it difficult for a person to think clearly. For example, a couple may not use protection during sex, or a drunk or high partner may not respect the other partner's sexual limits. A Sexual relationship involves many emotions. Choosing to be part of any relationship can be an emotional risk. When sex is involved, the emotional risk can increase because sex can change a relationship. Teens who learn to understand and express their emotions are preparing for sexual readiness. Another part of being ready for a sexual relationship is setting limits and standards for yourself. Limits are boundaries, or points beyond which someone will not go. Standards are expectations of how a relationship should be. It is important to decide how far you are willing to go before any sexual activity takes place. For couples who choose to engage in sexual intercourse, communication is especially important. Communicating about possible outcomes before they happen is important. For example, couples should discuss the method of protection they will use and how they will deal with a possible pregnancy before they have sexual intercourse. Willingness to take responsibility is a sign that a person is ready for a sexual relationship. Responsibility involves establishing, keeping, and respecting sexual limits and standards. Most teens are physically ready to have sexual intercourse at a young age. However, physical ability is only part of being ready to have sex. Being ready for a sexual relationship in all other ways should be a thoughtful, multiple-step process. It is normal for this process to happen over a period of time rather that all at once.

Below is a checklist of questions you should ask yourself to judge your own sexual readiness (www.thinkagain.ca )

The Cambodian Genocide

The Cambodian genocide is one of the most horrible and saddest genocide to date spanning form 175-178. As Cambodia gained there independence from France in 15 the country was controlled by prince Sihnaouk. In February of 16 America started to bomb Cambodia in secret. After a year of bombing a small time communist party the Khmer Rouge, started demonstrations in the large cities such as phon-phen. At that time the prince of Shanouk was visiting Paris, a pro-American general by the name of Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and joined the communist party of the Khmer rouge. War had struck Cambodia at this point. In April 170 Vietnamese and American troops invaded southeast Cambodia in the look for the Vietcong guerilla fighter in the rainforests of Cambodia. Lon Nol was proven to be not a well skilled military and political leader. Corruption worsened and Cambodians started believing that the country would be better of with the Khmer rouge and past prince sihnaouk. During that time the Khmer rouge was gaining power and falling away form their Vietnamese allies. Soon the Khmer rouge overthrew the over Lon Nol as he fled form the city April 1, 175. On April 17 the first Khmer troops entered the capital with their leader Pol Pot. They were welcomed with cheers and white flags. This was the start of the Cambodian genocide.

As Pol Pot realized his power now he immediately started his Khmer society. He started his society on an eight point program in his program he began the process of taking away all liberties of the people. He started to evacuate all people from all towns, abolish all markets, abolish currency, make monks grow rice, execute leaders of the Lon Nol regime, establish cooperatives throughout the country, dispose of the Vietnamese minority, and dispatch troops to the border mainly near Vietnam. as the Cambodian people were taken from their towns each person was told to write their last occupation so the Khmer could execute enemies and any intelligence that threatened them. Pol Pot wanted to make Cambodia a self-sufficient communist state and as make their revolution a pure one. Soon all printed material, private property, religion. And travel was forbidden. The people of Cambodia became totally black clothed slaves as the country was toiled with a wall of landmines surrounding the whole country. The men and women were separated and all put into the workforce digging canals, harvesting rice, as the children tended gardens. The workers were used from dawn to dusk even sometimes till the late hours of the night. Since the Khmer rouge had discarded of doctors and hospitals, treating the sick was done by untrained party officials or the way their ancestors had don it. This caused a great plague of death. From 177 to 178 the workforce had been severely cut by disease and malnutrition. Enemies of the state were sent to prisons and executed. The most famous of prisons was s-1 in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Prisoners were photographed on arrival at the prison and then tortured until they confessed their crime and then were executed.

The country could no longer control itself. Failure was upon them and they needed someone else to blame. The Khmer Rouge approached Vietnam as their new enemy. In early 177 Khmer raided Vietnamese territory and in late 177 heavy fighting broke out. The war was horrendous and Pol Pot was convinced that his army was infiltrated by spies from Vietnam. on Christmas day 178 0.00 Vietnamese and 18,000 dissident Cambodians battled along the border against 7,000 of the Khmer rouge. Phon Phen was recaptured in two weeks and the reaming army of the Khmer rouge fled to mountains to continue the fighting. The Cambodians before had ever-lasting hate toward the Vietnamese but now hailed them as saviors. During the Cambodian genocide 1.7 million people (0% of the population) lost their lives. This genocide could have maybe been prevent if the French had stayed in power but maybe not, history can not be taken back.
