Cheap essay writers help on Chem Social Relevance essays

Stratospheric ozone is a naturally-occurring gas that filters the suns ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A diminished ozone layer allows more radiation to reach the Earths surface.

For people, overexposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune systems

Increased UV can lead to reduced crop yield and disruptions in the marine food chain.

Because this reference is a Government Agency, it has quite a large amount of reference material, and I'm unable to paraphrase too much. Please see the site for more detail.

- How humans have affected the ozone layer

Chemicals that damage the ozone layer include methyl bromide (used as a pesticide), halons (used in fire extinguishers), and methyl chloroform (used as a solvent in industrial processes). These are all man made products.

Usefulness of information

There is quite a range of information on this website regarding Ozone. Everything from what ozone is, and what individuals can do to stop the depletion, to animations of the ozone hole. The reliability of the information would indeed be good, seeing it is coming from a Government agency. There are useful diagrams also located on this website. The information is aimed at the general public, and except for general knowledge, this isn't a good site for students. No equations are included, nor anything very in-depth about the subjects.

Greek Science and Its Benefits on Western Civilization

By John Doe

Greek civilization came to an end more than ,000 years ago, when Greece became a part of the Roman Empire. Yet its influence on politics, philosophy, art, architecture, language, and literature can still be felt today. Much of the language we use and many of our ideas about science and art come from ancient Greece.

The ancient Greeks influenced the Western World in many ways. The ancient Greeks especially contributed many things to the scientific world, from agriculture to astronomy. Passed down hundreds of years, the ways of living, hunting, farming, visual exploration of space, questions of the world around us, have change very little.

Many cultures have had innovative scientific developments and traditions of scientific thought. However, many of these cultures scientific histories have been swept away by time because their scientific foundations have been weak, resting on mythological superstitions. Greek science, on the other hand, has withstood time's tempests because of the strong foundations laid by earlier societies in mathematics, measurement, astronomy, and medicine. Greek science had its beginnings with mathematics. They were begun in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and then over the course of time were passed on to the Greeks. Archimedes and Pythagoras are considered to be the greatest Greek mathematicians, Archimedes was an early writer on the science of mechanics. Math and mechanics became extremely useful during the Golden Age of Greece. Geometry played a large role in the development of Greek architecture, and was applied widely. Many of their ways of building are still used today. Physics were also used to construct buildings as well as in war. Levers made moving large stones feasible. With the help of physics in wartime catapults were constructed to throw large stones at the enemy. Physics is a highly important topic in today's wars with propulsion and precision of bombs and other projectile aimed weapons.

The Greeks also developed astronomy. They were able to anticipate the day when certain planets would be visible to people on earth, and even where they would appear in the sky. This is known in today's terms as astronomy in position. With the space travel and eager information seeking individuals of today's society, this has made it possible for people to see things that would normally pass without notice.

Another topic the Greeks came up with is theoretical science. The ancient Greeks began asking questions about the world around them. They wanted to explain the unexplainable. They wanted to know where things came from and how they were made. Asking these questions and getting the first answers, even though many of them were proved wrong, actually laid the foundations of Western science still used today.

The Greeks passed their theories on to the Romans and others in Western Europe. For hundreds of years, European science was based on the early theories of the Greeks.

In conclusion, you can see that even though we don't realize how much of an impact ancient Greek science has on our day to day life, without it we would be left with far less answers and much harder lives than what we have.

There are several differences in Dick and Mary's background and personality, and because of the different reasons that come under these two factors, it spelled doom for Mary and Dick's hasty marriage.

Mary is known to lead a very carefree lifestyle in town, and she was more than glad to get away from her childhood house, which she had aptly described as "the sordid little house on stilts"(page 4). She was also ironically happy when her father died, because "that removed the last link that bound her to a childhood she hated to remember."(Page 4). Thus, one can tell that Mary's 'preference for town life' is probably just another of way of describing her 'desire to get away from her childhood'. The buildings, social and economic environment in town was very much different from that in the countryside. Living in town meant that Mary would not have to struggle with poverty the same way her family did when she was young. Besides that, Mary was never alone in town- she was very sociable and had many friends. This is rather contrasting with the life that she had led when she was young. So one can imagine how 'dispirited' Mary probably was when she arrived on Dick's farm, since the very image of it reminded her exactly of her childhood house. Mary, indeed, would have preferred staying in town, but Dick does not share her sentiments. Dick "felt ill at ease and uncomfortable…" (page 5) when he was in the town, and he disliked the way the people there lived their lives. He would rather go back to his farm, back to 'nature', instead of staying in the town where "…the cautious suburban mind was ruining his country…"(page 54). Mary and Dick's different preference for their living environment, although seemingly a minor problem, was one of the reasons that led to the breakdown of their marriage eventually.

Besides the difference in their backgrounds, their personalities also seemed to be worlds apart. Mary has always been the one listening to other's miseries and complains, just like the way she had been her mother's confidante when she was young; " …to listen, to advise, to act as a sort of universal shoulder for the world to weep on, and give back nothing of her own" (page 45). Dick, however, behaved like a little boy when Mary arrived on his farm. He was very keen in letting her know about the history of everything in the house, and he seemed to be so proud about his "victories over discomfort"(page 65). It is also because of Dick's "shyness, his defence towards her…" that enabled Mary to "feel protectively towards him, which she did when he looked like that, bashful and appealing…"(page 64). Mary's feeling towards Dick was a 'maternal' one, and she was able to 'immune' herself to their lovemaking. Dick, on the other hand, kept blaming himself and saying that he "had no right" in a self-abasing way. One probable inference that can be drawn by the different reactions and behavior of this couple is that Mary, used to the 'harsh' childhood that she had led, is more 'firm' in her decisions than Dick, and she also appears to be more decisive and clear about her ideals and goals she would set for herself. Dick, on the other hand, just appears to be someone who lives his life by the day, and never really worries himself about his future.

Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other.

Carl Jung

People have created a great number of games. A power game even didn't have to be invented for it lies in the nature of every living being. It has penetrated in almost every sphere of our day-to-day life politics, sport, family relations, different kinds of art, etc.

According to the psychologist Alfred Adler, a domineering type of people is characterized by self-assurance and forcefulness with an insignificant social interest, if there is any. Being active, they do not act in favour of society, hence, do not care about its prosperity and well-being. Such type of people is oriented on superiority over the outside world. The thing they focus on is the top of a career ladder.

However, it doesn't mean that everyone takes part in this game. Human beings continue developing, and instincts go in the second place giving in to the desire to work for social needs instead ego ones. Adler believed that social interest is the main criterion of psychological maturity. Such people are not so much interested in money and power as the result of their work as in a breakthrough as a result of a creativity process. They get power as naturally as they get acknowledgement and awards for contribution in this or that field. They are more passive players of this game because their goal is wider than just getting power. It involves serving for the benefit of people.

Taking into account what has been mentioned, we can differentiate between the two types of power game players

· Those who put their mind to power so that they would overcome any stumbling block without taking into consideration that it can be life and fate of a person or the whole world. They do not get embarrassed when using such methods as lie, violence, and suppression. Hitler's and Stalin's behavior when climbing to the top of power and trying to keep it are the most revealing examples. There are more mild ones.

· Those who developed their abilities, perfected their skills, and, hence, were rewarded by the power (this is a relative reward for it requires a lot of efforts and, even more importantly, responsibility). The power is the fact of recognition. For example, Vyacheslav Fetisov, who had been a brilliant hockey player, a successive coach, is now a minister of sports.

It is more difficult to get power on the second road because, as Robert Frost once wrote, it is "the one less travelled by" that implies inventing new things and techniques to attract attention and win acknowledgement. But the harder the way is, the sweeter the fruit men in power bear afterwards is.

As any other game this one has its set rules, although it depends on the field the player involved in. For example, if it is politics then etiquette should be observed, and a person should tell the things that people (electorate) would prefer to hear (though they may not be his or her true intentions).

It goes without saying that life is a dual matter; hence, a power game can be directed both to the good and to the evil. I'm pessimistic about this question and consider most power games to lead to the latter. As soon as people get power, they forget about people around them as individuals and take them as the crowd (it's not just my speculation, it's what the acquaintance of mine confessed to me once when telling about his perception in times of having power). As I start reflecting on in, words of Thomas Jefferson float in my mind, "I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be".

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Symbols, can be used to represent a variety of things. One such thing that symbols are often used to represent are ones family. Several characteristics of my family can be described with the use of symbols, and just as all families some parts can not. For my family, a barbed wire fence, a globe, a watch, a tree, and a peace sign. These symbols describe several aspects of my family.

The links within a wire fence unite the fence and make it a formidable defense. However, a link just by itself can not stop anything, as one can just walk right over it. My family is just like that, together we are strong, but separated we can easily be walked over. The security that a full barbed wire fence is like the whole family standing up for one person within the family, just like a barbed wire fence provides security so does the family. When my grandfather, became severly ill and the outlook for his future was grim, it took our entire family to help my mom get through this tough time, because she really loved her father, and always talked about what a great man he was. When he had become ill, it was as if my mom herself had become ill, and would only be cured by knowing that her father would get better.

As a globe demonstrates the diversity in this world, it also shows how my family is a family of diverse background, and also a family of immigrants coming to America. As a globe shows all the different cultures of the world, so does my family have a diverse background which contains people of many different backgrounds. My father came here leaving all that he knew from India, he had to leave his parents, and his brother to come to America. He often tells me that how scared he was to leave his parents and brother in India, but is glad he did, because it worked out well for him, and also encouraged his cousin to move to England.

A watch needs all of its parts to function correctly, just as my family needs everyone in it to work together to work together to accomplish any goal that we have. If any one gear was to be broken or misplaced in a watch, the watch as a whole would not function. It is like that in my family. If any member of my family was to not be there for any reason, then all that we would normally do would come to a standstill, as we don't have that one gear to turn the next gear, and then the next gear and so forth. My grandfather on my fathers side tells me this everytime I come to India, and I am glad that he does because it reminds me of how he feels about every member of the family being essential to one and another.

The branches of a several hundred year old tree, grows and extends very far. The tree has great influence in its vicinity. My family lineage, traces back many generations, and now spans many different countries, as over time different people in my family as a whole have moved around the world, and just as a tree has an influence over its surroundings, so does my family in our own vicinity. A family's reach and size grows over time just as a family does. My brother often compares our family lineage to a tree, as at the base would be as far back in generations as we could go, and then each branch along with its sub-branches, and the sub-branches sub-branches, show the family lineage easily organized.

"The peace of a family is well worth many sacrifices," my father always tells me when my brother and I argue about something or the other. He always stresses the point that family should stick to being family and not enemies, as if your own family is your enemies who can you turn to? With this is mind I have actually started arguing with my brother less over time.

Symbols, can represent many things throughout, and although five symbols are not nearly enough to represent everything in life, it is surely a start. Please note that this sample paper on the blame game is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on the blame game, we are here to assist you. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Whether or not homosexuality is biological has never been scientifically proven. Recently, however, there have been more studies that suggest it is not biological. According to Dr. Moberly 85%-0% of lesbians were victims of sexual abuse (Berean League, 11). A man or woman?s sexual preference is determined by a stimulus that causes a responsive behavior. Homosexuality is, therefore, learned. Research has not found enough evidence to say that people are ?born gay?.

Although, at times, studies show that homosexuality may be inherited, after careful observations the study has usually been discounted. No researcher has found any difference between a heterosexual male and a homosexual male that was not caused by their behavior. This says that there are differences, but those differences were responses to a specific stimulus. Even homosexuals themselves say that their sexual preference was the result of social or environmental influences. In 18, the Family Research Institute conducted an experiment with ,400 homosexuals. Eighty percent of those men said that their homosexuality was learned (Cameron, 1).

Researchers have now also reported that sexual conduct is influenced by cultural factors- especially religious convictions. Reports show that there is less homosexual activity among all religiously active groups than in groups that are not religiously active. Men and women raised in homes where religion is not a big factor are four times more likely to become homosexuals than those who were raised in homes where religion is important. What this research demonstrates is that when people believe that homosexuality is wrong they are less likely to become homosexuals (Cameron, 1).

?In a large random sample 88% of women currently claiming lesbian attraction and 7% of men claiming to currently enjoy homosexual sex, said that they had been sexually aroused by they opposite sex? (Cameron, 1, pg 4). When 04 random men where asked questions about their sex lives, it was reported that less than 1% of men had only had sex with men during their lives. Most homosexual men have been sexually aroused by, had sexual relations with, and have even fallen in love with someone from the opposite sex. These studies are illustrating how it is not biological because many of these men and women are also attracted to a member of the opposite sex. Many homosexuals can change their sexual preference (Cameron, 1).

Probably the research that best shows that homosexuality can not be biological is the fact that there are many ex-homosexuals. There are homosexuals who have been gay for several years and then chose not only to change their habits, but the object of their desire. Some reasons for this change can be the result of psychotherapy or religious conversions. In 184, a study reported that almost % of heterosexuals considered themselves to be homosexuals at one point in their lives. If, in fact, homosexuality was biological then these men and women ?born gay? could never change sexual preference, but studies show that many men and women have changed and become heterosexuals. That shows that homosexuality can not be biological (Cameron, 1).

Many scientists are still baffled by the cause of homosexuality. Whether homosexuality is biological or not has never been scientifically proven, but recently more studies demonstrate that people who are homosexuals are not ?born gay?. Many things can cause homosexual desire. Any homosexual experience, family abnormality, or unusual sexual experience can cause homosexual desire. Even a man or a woman?s culture can affect their religious preference. Research shows that homosexuality is not biological, and it can be changed.

I am a new student here at Chanel High School, and I thought I would take the time to tell you my thoughts and feelings about this new experience. I have attended public school my entire life, although my parents went through mostly private school, but both graduated from a public school. Although I believe public schools are a good experience, I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. When I was unhappy with my situation, and my surroundings at my previous high school I took the initiative to get out, and that is exactly what I did. It's hard to come into a new school so far into your high school career and expect to be accepted immediately. But I made sure to be nice and not shy and quiet, and tried my best to make new friends. Soon enough, I wasn't to new anymore. People just welcomed me with open arms, into a happy, warm environment. I believe this is a result of the teachers, administrators, parents, and the students all doing their part to reach out. High school is hard, dealing with all the drama that goes on in out teenage lives, I know in ten years I will look back and think about how silly it was to ever worry about such things, but no teenager is different, we all have to same concerns and that's just life. I have noticed that in a private school the quality of people you come across it much higher then those in the public education program, which provides a better environment for students to learn, grow and prosper.

You cannot go a day within the school and not hear, see, or read, "Seek what is above". You cannot go a day within the school without praying this is a nice change. The school lived up to every expectation I had, except one. Recently the school administrators have chosen to dismiss a student a mere days before graduation. I know the story, I know the family, and I also know the boy. He has good intentions, high hopes, and very high standards. He has made the effort to ask from help in classes he is not doing so well in, he has offered many things in return. He works at a camp for mentally disabled children. He has been blessed with the compassion and the patience to work with such precious souls. This is a choice he makes, he doesn't need the money nor want to money he just truly enjoys the children's' company.

As you know he has had some discipline problems, nothing overtly wrong just little slip ups here and there. Things that happen when the pressure of school, family, friends, sports, and all the other stress factors in your life builds up and you have no release. I know he means well, and hopes for the best for everyone, and I truly believe your choice to dismiss him wasn't the best choice to make. I believe it would be fit for most cases, but this one is a little different, there is more hope for him to succeed. With it being the end of March, so close to the end of the school year I have an idea, something that I think he will benefit from, more so then making him leave the school. Make him come back and finish the year out, make him pass all his classes, and make his take all his finals. Keep him active and involved with baseball, and possibly an academic club or two. They say most students do better when they are involved. But let him know that one more detention, on more write up he is gone, no if's, and's, or but's about it. You would have been generous enough to reconsider him, and see the determination he holds with in himself. I know that is only one small voice, but I hope I at least I sparked something inside you. Please take my thoughts into consideration, I honestly feel this boy has more hope within him then was he has chosen to expose.

Thank you for your time it is greatly appreciated. I hope you recognize the compassion I have exerted in this letter. Thank you again.

The conclusion of animal farm in the animated film is fairly different to the novel of Animal Farm.

Firstly, in the film the story is more told by pictures and narration, to explain what was happening and animation to emphasise and easily understand what was happening. However in the Novel the story was told more by speeches made by the animals.

Secondly, in the film Snowballs death was much more explicit than in the novel, this is because more emphasis can be showed with animation rather than words. Therefore Snowballs death looked and was probably made more explicit because of the above reason.

Thirdly, in the novel the name was changed from Manor farm to Animal farm after Jones was overthrown, however it was then changed back to the original name which was Manor farm as Napoleon believed that Manor farm was its original and proper name, however in the film the name of the farm remained as Animal farm.

Fourthly, a minor detail which is the plans for the windmill was drawn on a piece of paper in the film, however in the Novel the plans for the windmill were drawn on the floor.

The film showed barbed wire and watchtowers surrounding the farm for protection, however the novel never mentioned this fact at all.

The film showed an outlook of outside the farm as well as just in the farm. As it showed Jones going to the Red Lion pub, meeting his fellow farmers to make plans to overthrow the animals, however the novel does not show a view of the world outside the farm.

In the film, the windmills story is condensed; once the windmill was built Jones strapped a bomb to himself and blew up the entire windmill after that the windmill was rebuilt, however in the novel after the windmill is built, it is blown down by a storm first and then after it is rebuilt Jones destroys it.

The novel gives much more detail of Old Majors speech where as in the film it is condensed.

In the film Benjamin is portrayed as a hard worker and a hero, however in the novel he is shown as cynical and embittered. Benjamin and Boxer are very good friends. In the film both Boxer and Benjamin were woken up early to work towards the windmill, however in the novel only Boxer was woken up early.

Also, as a minor change there are pictures of Napoleon all over the farm in the film, however in the novel there is no mention of this.

Finally, going towards the conclusion, in the film it ends by the animals overthrowing the Pigs, however in the novel it concludes by the pigs remaining in power. A minor change which made it easier for the animals to overthrow the pigs was the fact that the pigs in the film was that the dogs which Napoleon had for the protection of himself, were drunk due to wine at the end of the film, however in the novel there was no mention of this fact. In the end in the film Napoleon was meeting with other fellow pigs, however in the novel Napoleon was meeting with Mr. Pilkington (a human).

Those are most of the changes between the film and the novel. Following is which ending is more effective, the film or the novel.

As you can see the film had major changes compared to the novel. The two endings had different morals.

The Film ended by the animals overthrowing the pig, which has the moral

Good Triumph Over Evil

The novel ended by Benjamin just making a statement and no action was taken, so the pigs remained in power so there are two morals

The More Things Change

The More They Stay The Same

And

Power Corrupts

In my opinion the films ending is more effective, as it is more of a happy ending, and it shows that another revolution can occur if someone becomes too cocky or power mad. Which shows this is a never-ending story. That is why I think the films ending was more effective. Many Americans associate Iraqi men with tendencies and ideologies that are not concurrent with the way they see themselves. These notions that have been aroused by newspapers, news magazine shows and regular news coverage portray Iraqi men by use of qualifying adjectives as inhumane, unstable as a people, and desperate for American aid and relief. The four articles presented for group analysis of how the media portrays Iraqi men, are examples of such ideologies presented to the world by the dominant culture. Due to the current situation with Iraqi, the "showdown," all of the articles selected delve into detail about the Fedayeen, the Iraqi military, or individual military personnel. This paper will analyze the medias use of language to dehumanize the Iraqi man.

While reviewing the four articles selected, it was apparent that the media favors terms that are context friendly, meaning that certain words carry different meaning in different contexts. The use of the word "swarmed," in the Denver Post article Iraqis mob aid trucks depicts the men as insect-like, while another article states the Fedayeen as "pecking away," furthering the reader's image of the Iraqi man as an animal. In another article the reader pictures Iraqi civilians running, "dirty," and "shoeless" to an aid truck. It is as if the citizens of the war-struck country have a choice as to their appearance, and desire to be such promoting the image that Iraqis are overall a dirty people. The use of language in all four articles does more for furthering theimage of the white privilige class than demonstrating an understanding of the Iraqi men. By dehumanizing Iraqi men in all four articles the media furthers the image of the United States as a hero, and the troops as the savior of the Iraqi people, making the public believe that Iraqis are in desperation, and dire need for American support. The underlying theme in the articles is that the Iraqi men are barbaric, inhumane, and cruel, and it is not premature to say that the four articles portray Iraqis as less than Americans,

All four articles mention the cruelty among the ranks in the Iraqi military and among civillians. What the articles fail to mention is that the overall culture of the country is different from that of the United States, the dominant culture. Those who are educated even the slightest bit in middle eastern countries understand that life is valued differently, and being a martyr is something to strive for. A Times Online article about the bribary which goes on in the Fedayeen, talks about the price of death. As an American reading the article, it is easy to jump to comclusions about the culture. One might think that the suiccide missions carried out are insane, yet according to religion in Iraq, one interperetation is that these missions are not only accepted, but greatly rewarded. The media in the United States does not begin to analyze this aspect of Iraqi culture other than a quick remark in one article which calls the entire regime "psychotic". The ideologies represented throughout the articles represent those of the dominant culture, and not the Iraqi people.

The notion that Americans are right, and Iraqi's wrong is an indication that articles have been written from not only a position of power, but a position of total domination, and privilige. Manipulitive language has been used to make the American public think that liberating" Iraq is what is best for the country. This stereotype, that all Iraqi men and women want American support, stems from a righteous dominant ideology that Americans are right, and all others are wrong.

Essay help on Iraqi men

If the author of each article's name was not written directly under the ehading, one might think the four articles selected were written by the same person. Language filled with qualifying adjectives, stereoptypes, and dominant perspective fills the pages of all four articles. Although they each have slightyly different topics, the main thesis of each is that Iraqi men, regardless of military status are dirty, inhumane, and desiring of American interference with their lives. Please note that this sample paper on Iraqi men is for your review only. Emily Bronte's life was not a happy one. She never really knew her mother, she never had any close friends, and she never married. Her tragic life contributed to her one and only novel, Wuthering Heights. This book is a romance, filled with tragedy and revenge. So what kind of life did she have that inspired such a morbid story?

Emily Jane Bronte was born on July 0th, 1818, to Reverend Patrick and Maria Bronte. She was the 5th of 6 children. Her mother died when she was just three years old. (Biography…1) Because of this, Emily was prone to writing stories with motherless characters. (Barker 1) After her mother's death, their strict Calvinist Aunt Branwell moved in to help take care of them. When she was six years old, her father sent her and her sister Charlotte to the Clergy Daughter's School, where their older sisters Maria and Elizabeth were already enrolled. This school was "run with the intention of punishing the pupils' bodies that their souls might be saved." (Biography…1) They were punished by being kept hungry, cold, tired, and ill. (Biography…1) A year after being sent there, a typhoid epidemic spread throughout the school. Maria and Elizabeth fell ill with tuberculosis and both died. The father hurried to the school in June of 185 to take his remaining daughters home. (Vine 1)

In 186, Emily, Charlotte, sister Anne, and brother Branwell made up a fantasy world named Gondal. They wrote stories, plays, histories, and poetry about this make believe world. For Emily, the adventures of Gondal "coexisted on almost an equal level of importance and reality with the lonely and mundane world of household chores and walks on the moor." (Biography…1)

Emily very rarely spent time away from home. (Biography…1) In 185, Charlotte took Emily to a school called Roe Head, where Charlotte was teaching at the time. After less than three months there, she became very pale and thin. Charlotte thought she would die if she did not go home, so she sent Emily back home. (Vine 1) She tried other jobs away from home. In 187, she tried to be a governess, and in 184, she tried teaching at a school in Brussels. Both times she missed her home very much and returned as soon as she could. (Barker 1) Emily never really fit in anywhere outside of her home, and, being shy and reserved, never made any close friends. (Biography…1)

In 1846, Charlotte found some Gondal poems Emily had written in secret. She wanted to have them published, but Emily refused. It turns out that Anne and Charlotte had been writing poems in secret, also, so they decided to publish a collection of their poetry. Using their pseudonyms, they called it Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. It only sold two copies, but that didn't stop the girls from continuing to write. In 1846, Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and had it published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The book wasn't widely accepted until after her death in 1848. She used the pseudonym because she wanted to remain anonymous at all costs. After Emily's death, however, Charlotte finally disclosed their real identities in her book, Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell. (Vine 1)

Their brother Branwell died in 1848. While attending his funeral, Emily caught tuberculosis. She refused any medical assistance, and finally died on December 1, 1848. (Vine 1) Before her death, she had been working on a second novel. After she died, Charlotte destroyed the manuscript, fearing it would hurt Emily's reputation. Juliet Barker says this about Charlotte's action "In my opinion, Charlotte should've minded her own business." (Barker 1)

Emily Bronte's life was a tragic one. But it helped her write Wuthering Heights, one of the great classics. This also helped her become one of the giants of English literature. She is now considered the genius of the Bronte sisters.Works Cited

Is the Electoral College the Best Way to Select the President?

The question posed is "Is the Electoral College the Best Way to Select the President?" There are two outstanding flaws in the Electoral College and two logical reasons to keep the method instated which will be presented in the following. The opposing argument insists that the will of the American people is misrepresented. Some states are also more influential than others which can also lead to one sided elections. Those who are for the college agree that the process keeps the white house safe from bias. They also feel that the population of larger states is adequately represented. My own feelings on how the "scale" of pros to cons weighs out will be in the conclusion.

Put simply, the will of the American people is not represented in the Electoral College. There have been several elections in which the Electoral College chose the candidate with the minority of the popular vote. Most notably in history was the election of 184 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. The populace clearly wanted John Adams as president, but the Electoral College decided otherwise. This was a big mistake for the Electoral College, and only one of many. The people were also misrepresented in 1844, 1880, 1884, 160, and 168. In many cases if the voice of the people is heard, it is ignored if an elector is a beneficiary or bias to some president's policy. In short, the middle and lower classes are not part of the triangle which only leaves room for the will of elitists.

The next con at hand is the plight of misrepresented (or underrepresented) states.

Write my paper on The Electoral College for me

As we all know the power houses of the electoral votes are California, Texas, Florida, and New York. These states are just as misrepresented as well as smaller states because of the concept of winner-take-all with each state. California has 55 electoral votes; if candidate A gets 7 votes and Candidate B gets 6, candidate A gets all those votes in California. Technically, 6 of those votes shouldn't belong to candidate B. Every democratic candidate can count on a firm base of 55 votes each election because of the majority of California's political stance and the winner-take-all rule. So with California in the bag, all a democratic candidate needs to do is counter the republican candidate's baby-kissing in Texas and Florida, make an occasional visit to New York and the democratic campaign has a rock solid foundation for the presidency.

The electoral college keeps the election safe from a public bias when compared to the desire of a popular vote driven election. Some say that powerful elitists choose the president that best benefit their desires and that they should not choose the president. This is far from the truth. The theory of the Electoral College was that an educated group of individuals are to be appointed to decide what is best for the country. They became "elitists" because of their education, which is imperative to be an elector that they used to acquire high paying jobs as lawyers, attorneys and various government roles. When the Electoral College was formed, the majority of society was uneducated. This left them vulnerable to a candidate with empty promises or one with a terrible policy and no economic intelligence. In a free market economy, the flow of goods and services is vital to the stability of the nation and the electors had the education and knowledge to choose the best candidate whether supported by the popular vote or not. Most of America is educated now so does that mean a change in the electoral system is needed? No. The system has worked since it was conceived and continues to be thorough and well executed by our leaders.

Lastly, the Electoral Colleges method of state representation accurately gives power to the states that are most influenced by the election of a presidential candidate. Many have complained that smaller states are misrepresented because of the unfair ratio of representatives to population count. The truth is that states are given the appropriate amount of electoral votes when compared to their population because they have little influence on the economy and politics to begin with. So if Alabama's electoral votes counted as much as California's the final vote of the election would not accurately display the will of the American people and give nay sayers a possible third point against this institution.

In my frustrated attempt of Janusian thinking I come to a justified conclusion the Electoral College isn't the best way to elect the president. The theory of the Electoral College was sound assuming that man isn't corrupt and that human nature is inherently good. This is not the case because of the human nature to abuse power. Having a chosen committee to choose the president efficient but many rules in the electoral institution need revising which outweigh the pros. With more cons then pros, the Electoral College should not be the method to choose the president.

I dont think any one film is ever going to change anything. I dont think any one newspaper article ever changes anything. But over a period of years, the drip, drip, drip of a lot of gook movies, a lot of good articles...all this is very, very, very important. The effect of that drip, drip, drip the daily diet of views and ideas that adhere to and promote what is best in society, that has an effect. Not one movie, not one article, not one building, but just that fact that all of us buckle down and try to do better and beter.

The movie Schindlers List is a movie that is used to make people really think about what is right and what is wrong, specifically the Nazi treatement of the Jews. Throughout Schindlers List power scenes and images are used to capture how atrosic the treatment of the Jews really was. The movie helps people to get a view back in history and decide how they truly feel on the subject. It is Steven Speilburgs affective plot, content, imagery and film making skills that makes Schindlers List a movie that adds to constant drip, drip, drip of a viewpoint.

The plot of the movie is very affective in displaying the severe treatment that the Jews experienced from the Nazis. The movie begins with Oskar Schindler getting on the good side of Nazi officers so that he will be able to obtain Jews to work for him without a problem. After Schindler obtains the Jews to work for him the movie really begins to focus on the horrible treatment towards the Jews. A scene that really stands out and shows a moment of realization for Schindler is when the Jews are stripped from their homes in the ghettos. This is a point in the movie where for the first time Schindler begins to see the hardships that the Jewish people have to face.

The movie continues on to show many of the experiences of the Jews. After the Jews were stripped from their homes in the ghetto they were moved to the concentration camp where Ghert had control of the Jews. Spielberg is able to use Ghert to show the extreme hatred that some of the Nazis had toward Jews. With Gherts numerous random killings, Spielberg makes it evident that the Jews were being exterminated by the Nazis. The terrible treatement and the killing of the Jews really helps to build the plot of this movie.

Cheap college papers on Schindler's List 1005 words

Schindler witnesses this horrible treatment and the random killing of the Jews. This lets us the viewer get an idea of why Schindler decides to help the Jews. In the last past of the movie it focuses on Schindler trying to save Jewish lives by buying Jews to work in a factory where he is able to manipulate the Nazi soldiers to not treat the Jews poorly. For the viewer to see that Schindler begins to gain sypothy for the Jews after he witnesses their treatment is essential to the plot because this helps them to see it from a perspective of Schindler and helps them to understand his feelings, more importantly what kind of person that Schindler is. The viewer gets a much better perspective on why Schindler risks his live and spends all of his money in order to save the Jews. The use of plot by Spielberg plays an affective role throughout the movie.

Another element that can be seen throughout the movie is the use of imagery. Spielberg does a great job on showing what was happening to the Jews. The viewer can feel as if they were in the movie where terrible things were happening. Effective imagery is used when a few of the Jews were shot in the head by Nazi soldiers. The people being shot had obviously done nothing wrong. For instance, the woman who told Ghert that the fondation needed to be repoured. She was just doing her job and she was shot in the head. After she falls to the ground you can see the blood flowing out of her head onto the ground. This imagery is used multiple times throughout the movie when other Jews are shot in the head.

Imagery was continued to be used in the movie when the Jewish corpsases were being disposed of. This is seen a number of times throughout the movie. One time is when Schindler gets out of jail and ashes are coming down from the sky. The ashes were from the thousands of Jewish bodies were being burned in the incinerary. Jewish corpsases were also burried by the hundreds and there were also open burning pits where Jewish bodies were being dropped into the fire by convayor belts. The burning of the bodies was definately an effective use of imagery.

The little girl that had the red jacket was the only color used in this film and she was a source of imagery. The girl stood out from all of the other Jewish people when they were being taken from their homes in the ghettos. She wondered around innocently, not really paying attention to what was going on around her. She was afraid of what was happening so she made her way unnoticed into an apartment where she was able to hide underneath a bed. This little girl was used as imagery to symbolize innosence. The red jacket she wore made her stand out so the viewer was really able to notice her. The fact that the girl was so young and so afraid is what symbolized her true innocense. This was another way Spielberg used imagery in the movie.

Schindlers List is a movie that has a great impact on the viewers that see it. They are able to see the bad experiences that the Jewish community had to face with the Nazis. Schindlers List is an example of one of those movies that does not change peoples views, but with the drip, drip, drip of movies like this will truly begin to change peoples views.

Happiness is something that can be achieved by anyone no matter what circumstances they find themselves in. The person is always in the prime circumstance to be truly happy and experience what Cskszentmihalyi, the author of the book, Flow, The Psychology of Optimal Experience, refers to as the "optimal experience." While the process is not difficult, it does involve dedication, desire, and a striving to be happy, no matter what. Flow is an optimal experience that is characterized by a sense of playfulness, a feeling of being in control, concentration and highly focused attention, mental enjoyment of the activity for its own sake, a distorted sense of time, and a match between the challenge at hand and ones skills

The author does not attempt to outline a step-by-step method for being happy, but rather concentrates on enlightening the reader to methods of improving their outlook and motivation. He directs their thoughts to their inner selves and to the knowledge of finding within themselves the ability to truly accomplish an amazing feat, that of finding and being in flow. He refers to flow as order in consciousness. Flow can be generally defined as the ability to be at one with one's self, with one's thoughts, with one's actions, and with one's circumstances. Although there is no real order to flow, there is a path that once take to get there and that includes six separate steps. The first step is to make it a game, look at your task as a game, and establish rules, objectives, challenges to be overcome, and rewards. Next one should provide them with a powerful goal. As you play the game, remind yourself frequently of the overriding spiritual, social, or intellectual purpose that drive your efforts. Then simply focus, release your mind from all distractions, from within or without, focus your entire attention on the game. Then, let go dont strive or strain to achieve your objective, just enjoy the process of work. Next, you will feel ecstasy. This is the natural result of the preceding four steps; it will hit you out of nowhere and possibly take you by surprise. Finally, your ecstatic state opens vast reservoirs of resourcefulness, creativity, and energy. Your productivity and quality of work will shoot through the roof.

Some sources of flow are "making music, rock climbing, dancing, sailing, chess, and so forth (Cskszentmihalyi 7)." These activities are flow activities because they allow the person involved to learn a certain skill, set up some goals that they plan to achieve, they provide a certain feedback that is necessary, and they make control a necessary part of the activity. These activities also take the participant out of the reality of everyday life and separate them from the mortals for the time that are performing the activity. Another example of flow activities is games and there are four types of games that one can compete in. The first is agnostic games, where your skills are pinned up against the skills of another. Second are aleatory games, which give the person the illusion of controlling the inscrutable future. Agon includes agnostic and contains games that include competition and ilnx is the name of games that involve chance such as gambling (Cskszentmihalyi 7-7

BOOK REVIEW

Thomas Cayhill's The Gift Of the Jews

Chapter 1

The book begins by commenting on the written word, which was carved in Sumer of Uruk, the world's first civilization and perhaps earliest city. It is stated that this writing "invention" came out of necessity to be able to keep and reference accounts and transactions. Thus, written symbols took the place of human memory. When reading further into this chapter and getting some insight into the Sumerian people, I can now somewhat understand their desire to improve recording methods and account summaries. Cayhill praises the Sumerians by describing their relatively "sophisticated" lifestyle. They were advanced in the areas of farming, mathematics, husbandry, and medicine, as well as possessing many other skills and talents. Overall, the Sumerians are described as practical and down-to-earth businesspeople.

This chapter brings up an interesting and ironical point that although the Sumerians, "the black-headed people" invented writing, the instrument that makes history possible, they themselves had no sense of history. Partly because of this, Sumerian stories and tales miss the sense of development that has become the norm in all modern works. Cayhill relates their story-telling techniques to a young child repeating a joke they heard, yet the punch-line is of no importance to them and usually there isn't one. Aside from their lousy literary structure, Cayhill says that we today enjoy these stories because we can associate some of our emotions with theirs, and therefore feel closer to them.

A solid portion of the chapter is dedicated to summarizing a Sumerian work that has perhaps impacted our culture more than any of their other literatures. The story is called the Epic of Gilgamesh, a legend of a hero called Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk during the third millennium B.C. This story begins with a piece of poetry that describes and glamorizes the city of Uruk. The story includes themes of loneliness, friendship, love, teamwork, lust, and other important topics that surround our culture today. Towards the end, Gilgamesh loses his dear friend Enkidu and, after seven days of grieving, he sets out to obtain the secret of immortality. The epic concludes when Gilgamesh finally finds the only mortal man who has been granted immortality (Ut-napishtim, who is the model for the biblical Noah) who offers him some advice that Cayhill believes to be the main lesson of this work. In short, Gilgamesh is told that no matter how hard he tries, he will not be able to avoid or escape death. He is advised by the alewife to enjoy life while he is still alive, to appreciate the things he has and those around him.

The chapter concludes with Cayhill describing similarities and differences between Sumerian qualities and those of our society today. He also says that portions of the Hebrew Bible have evolved from Sumerian times, emphasizing the tail of the primordial flood and the ark that preserved life.

Chapter

Chapter two begins by mentioning a topic that was discussed briefly during one of our lectures, which involves the idea that so many of the major aspects of our world move in a circular fashion. Namely, primitive humans looked to heaven and saw what Cayhill calls the "wheel of life," which revolved around the "hub of death." Cayhill mentions that a work was recently found in Australia that is perhaps the earliest human art, about 75,000 years old. This piece consists of a series of circles which in Cayhill's mind, acknowledges the patter of the "ever-turning wheel." Animals are mentioned which were thought to be earth animals manifested by the moon, or, "moon-creatures." These include a snake, spider, bull, oyster with its pearl, snail, and a bear. Cayhill explains that however illogical it may seem to us, these theories produced by primitive man are the same as our attempts to fine some truth out there.

Cayhill then goes into the "begettings" of Terah, who are made up by Avram (Abraham), Nahor and Haran. He then goes into the journey of Terah, Avram, Lot and Sarai. They left from Ur of the Chaldeans, and set out for Canaan. However, they settled in the land of Harran, where Terah died. The question is brought up as to whether or not these citizens of Ur planned to settle in Harran instead of Canaan. The justification for such an argument lies in the fact that Terah and his family were well established int eh land of Ur. Why would they want to leave that for Canaan, a land where the people ate their meat raw and did not know how to bury their dead. Regardless of the intent, Cayhill moves on to include the excerpt of a voice coming to Avram, which probably took place in Harran. After being blessed and promised a great nation, Avram, along with Sarai and Lot, set out for Canaan. Cayhill brings up a point that no matter how far away they travel from their original home, their Sumerian heritage went with. Cayhill then relates this to an insight that everyone can take away from this. Avram, Sarai and Lot "could no more escape this mind-set of their culture any more than we can escape ours. The lesson, in my eyes, is that things do not change overnight. One cannot leave a place and expect to rid himself/herself of all that he wants to leave behind. This perspective of the Sumerian includes, as mentioned earlier, the emphasis on and importance of business. Another viewpoint, stated well by Ut-napishtim and other Sumerian proverbs, revolves around the selfishness and impurity of man. "Man behaves badly," and "Never has a sinless child been born."

After the death of Terah, the remaining three set out on their journey. Avram is described as a childless man who is sent by his god to make his "great nation," although he does not know where he's headed. Cayhill then depicts him as the chosen leader who must emerge from the people, who know that everything ends in death, and teach them to dream of something new in the future. It is mentioned that virtually every population of peoples would have scorned Avram's attempts and shook their heads in disbelief.

Chapter

In the beginning of chapter three, Cahill does his best to encapsulate the power of God. All dialogue between God and human is initiated by God. "This God" is not the main character of a myth, nor is he a typical "ancient divinity" or "achetypal gesturer." Rather, he is an actual personality who has, by changing the course of life as humans know it, made life and everything that surrounds it, unpredictable.

Advertisement One Proactiv Solution

When reviewing a Proactiv Solution acne fighting medicine advertisement (see attached) there were many fallacies to be found within the ad itself, as well as the surrounding aids to the argument. The premises and conclusion of the advertisement are labeled accordingly on the attached add. As well the argument is designed as a variation of a V argument with three main premises, and one main conclusion. The first premise, however also acts as a sub-conclusion to the six quiz questions on the side of the advertisement which can be considered premises for that sub-conclusion. This is seen in the diagram below

The initial fallacy which is committed lies within the quiz questions which the advertisement has created for the reader to take in order to see if their product will "work for your acne". Each question which is provided is extremely vague allowing for anyone that has experienced even a single blemish to answer "yes" to at least three of the six questions, as well each question suffers from the false dichotomy fallacy as they suggest that each of the general options which are provided are exhaustive options. This is seen in all the questions but especially number two which states "Most of my break outs are small bumps and black heads, but sometimes I get those nasty megazits". These definitions, as well as those included in the other five questions are much to obscure for their use. This is observable again in question number two as there are many other types of blemishes which may occur as well, what exactly constitutes as a "megazit"? If one is to know if their specific skin type will be cured by such a product as Proactiv Solution the questions which identify the skin type must use specific terminology. Perhaps if the questions were more precise in their description the company would attract customers who have the skin type which the product would work affectively on. However, the companies aim is obviously not to attract the correct customers but rather as many customers as possible as is displayed by their catch-all type questions.

The second fallacy which the advertisement commits is found again within the first premise, however this time the fallacy is committed in the premise's circularity and equivocation. The premise is circular and in turn confusing for the reader as it states, "If you answered "yes" to at least three of these questions, the answer is a definite "yes!" Proactiv Solution was made for your skin type". This makes it unclear as to what the answer of "yes" is being said in reference to. The second problem with this premise is again that it states that if readers have answered "yes" to any three of the questions about bad skin; which the company has created along the side of the advertisement, then their acne medicine will work for the reader's skin type. Because both skin types and problems are very unique to each individual each question will be answered differently by every reader therefore it is equivocal to state that their Proactiv Solution is the single and solution that is "made" for each reader's skin type. This fallacy is once again committed in the conclusion as it states "get rid of them once and for all, with Proactiv Solution" implying that this medication will be the ultimate solution for the readers acne, which is untrue to say without relevant testing of any sort on the reader.

The third fallacy which is committed in the Proactiv Solution advertisement is within the statement "Hey, celebrities use this stuff. Why? 'Cause it works". This is quite obviously a fallacy of relevance and more specifically both an appeal to authority and an appeal to popularity. It is an example of both of the appeal to authority as it suggests that celebrities know more about skin care products, thus the reader should be convinced that the product is good because celebrities use it. This of course is not the case as although many celebrities do have skin which appears to be free of blemishes they do not necessarily know more about skin care products. In edition, the advertisement does not state how many celebrities use the product or which ones do, therefore the one or two celebrates that may have used the product at one time may indeed continue to be plagued by blemished skin.

This same argument also falls into the appeal to popularity fallacy because in our society many people in the general public admire and mimic celebrities. A large part of the general populous considers those with celebrity status and good looks as role models, and as a result many attempt to do what they can to become more similar to their role models. The fact that the premise is attempting to both convince the reader of the products effectiveness and entice the reader to purchase the product for their own use because some celebrities may uses their product is misleading; and this is increased by the fact that the advertisement was found in a Teen People magazine which is filled with celebrities and holds a primarily teen audience.

In addition to the particular fallacies found within the premises themselves there are other fallacies found throughout the advertisement as aids to the argument. Firstly the title of the advertisement states, "Can Proactiv Solution work for your acne? Take this quiz and find out". This insinuation that the solution to the readers acne problem will be found within the survey provided presupposes the truth that may or may not be found within the questions to follow. Thus, the title of the advertisement suffers from the begging the question fallacy. A more acceptable argumentative manner in which to state the title for this advertisement would be, 'Proactiv Solution An Acne Fighting Medicine'. Had the title been worded in such a manner false promises that both a solution and a conclusion to the reader's acne problem would be avoided.

Lastly, in addition to the title the pictures of an acne sufferer who now has clear skin supposedly because of her Proactiv Solution use, is yet another tool used to aid the faulty argument. The pictures themselves are fallacies as they too beg the question. They do this indirectly as they present first an image of a girl at age nineteen with mild acne, no make up or jewelry, unkempt hair, and a dejected look on her face. Next a picture of the same girl is presented although this time her appearance has drastically been altered. Now the girl; whose age is not stated, has clear skin, both makeup and jewelry on, done up hair, and a delighted look on her face resulting in the implied conclusion that Proactiv Solution is what has caused the change in her appearance and not the other factors.

Both the implied and directly stated premises and conclusions found in the Proactiv Solution advertisement when assessed in detail were found to have many faulty promises and misleading statements. These statements were designed to influence the largest amount of readers to buy the product and not help those who the product could have a possibility of working effectively for, therefore as was established in the arguments above the Proactiv Solution advertisement is as a whole an ineffective argument. The Leviathan is a classic of English literature which is noteworthy of containing a rational construction of natural law as the basis of positive law. In preference to common law; it provides a representative theory of absolute authority. Thomas Hobbes culminates a systematic trilogy on physical bodies, human nature, and body politic. He never departed from the concept of philosophy which he defined as the knowledge acquired by reasoning from the manner of the generation of any thing to the properties or from the properties to some possible way of generation of the same; to be able to produce as far as matter and human force permit, such effects as human life requires. The leviathan expounded the religious doctrine of a holy commonwealth in terms of revelation of divine law. The image depicting Hobbes's leviathan is of a huge man, whose body is composed of thousands of smaller people, all towering above a well ordered city below. This represents an all powerful sovereign who represents the people and is in a sense the embodiment of their being. The natural philosopher, Thomas Hobbes lived during some of the most tumultuous times in European history -- consequently, it is no surprise that his theories were thoroughly pessimistic regarding human nature. In The Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes asserts that the ideal form of government is composed of an omnipotent Sovereign, whose only innate responsibility to his subjects is to prevent civil war, which Hobbes feels is the natural state in which man would live without government. The Sovereign, he claims, is appointed by the people of a nation as their agent to maintain domestic order.

Man is not naturally good, Hobbes claimed, but naturally a selfish hedonist -- of the voluntary acts of every man, the object is some good to himself. As human motives were, in their natural state, guided by unenlightened self-interest, these could, if left unchecked, have highly destructive consequences. Left unrestrained, humans, propelled by their internal dynamics, would crash against each other. Hobbes tried to envision what society would be like in a state of nature -- before any civil state or rule of law. His conclusion was dispiriting life would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short, a war of every man against every man. Nonetheless, as all people are equal in a physical not a moral sense, possessing a passionate love of survival and some degree of rationality, Hobbes concluded that a viable, working society would arise as equilibrium between these competing forces. The logic is simple. Any persons right of nature justifies violence against everybody else. Consequently, in the interests of personal survival, people will come around to agreeing that they should renounce their right to use violence. However, this yields up a tense and unstable equilibrium. The moment one party deviates from their promise, all will deviate and war restarts.

To keep society going with peace and confidence, then an artifice -- a Leviathan -- must be worked into the social contract. This Leviathan is the State -- whether in the form of an absolute monarch or a democratic parliament, it does not matter. The important point is that the State will be given a monopoly on violence and absolute authority. In return, the State promises to exercise its absolute power to maintain a state of peace by punishing deviants. Realizing that its power depends wholly on the willingness of the citizens to surrender theirs, the State itself will have an incentive not to abuse it. Of course, there is no guarantee that it wont. But when it does, it must brace itself for the consequences. . Unfortunately, most leaders, particularly African leaders, are misusing the power of the sovereign and do not want to embrace its consequences. The Leviathan states, The first branch of the general rule of reason containeth the first, and Fundamental Law of Nature; which is, to seek Peace, and follow it. The Second, the Right of Nature; which is, by all means we can, to defend our selves'. Encompassed in these two basic rights is Hobbess entire argument for the institution of a sovereign ruler, which is firstly to protect a nations citizens from all other citizens, and secondly to protect the nation from all other nations. If peace cannot be achieved by stagnation, then the duty of the sovereign, and by contract the only duty of the sovereign, is to mobilize his subjects and declare war on any nation that poses a threat to the stability of his own. One of the interesting elements of Hobbess story is that concepts like morality, liberty, justice and property, have no natural, intrinsic or eternal meaning. They are pure social constructions. They are generated and imposed by the Leviathan, through his laws and institutions, to keep war and social disorder at bay. As history has shown, no set of values will last forever but will evolve as circumstances change. Hobbes is particularly keen to note that law itself is completely dependent on power. A law without a credible and powerful authority behind it is just simply not a law in any meaningful sense. Hobbes is thus one of the progenitors of legal positivism, that is, justice is whatever the law says it is. For Hobbes, power legitimates, power is justice. The State -- whatever its form -- is always, by definition, right, as long as it is capable of maintaining civil peace.

Generally regarded as one of the most prominent natural law philosophers of the 17th Century, Hobbes had an enormous impact on subsequent British political, social and economic theory. Naturally, his idea of a social equilibrium between contradictory self-interests is strikingly obvious in the various aspects of economics to the modern day especially in Jeremy Bentham's utilitarianism where he expresses the Hobbesian hedonism_ 'Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do as well as to determine what we shall do. On the one hand, the standard of right and wrong, on the other, the chain of causes and effects are fastened to their throne.' (Bentham,1780).

In concordance to Hobbes's views on the state of nature, the social contract and absolute government, sovereignty is the basis for a stable political regime of law and order and as to the whole doctrine, I see not yet, but the principles of it are true and proper. For I ground the civil right of sovereigns, and both the duty and liberty of subjects, upon the known natural inclinations of mankind, and upon the articles of the law of nature; of which no man, that pretends but reason enough to govern his private family, ought to be ignorant. The leviathan is the most complete expression of Hobbess philosophy. It begins with a clearly materialistic account of human nature and knowledge, a rigidly deterministic account of human volition, and a pessimistic vision of the consequently natural state of human beings in perpetual struggle against each other. It is to escape this grim fate, Hobbes argued, that we form the commonwealth, surrendering our individual powers to the authority of an absolute sovereign. For Hobbes, then, individual obedience to even an arbitrary government is necessary in order to forestall the greater evil of an endless state of war. Reference/ Bibliography
