Legalize It

It is my belief that the policy of the United States in regards to marijuana and other illicit street drugs is flawed and that marijuana should be legalized for not only medical use, but for recreational use as well. In this paper I will look at the prohibition of marijuana in America, compare its positive and negative effects, and in doing so bring to light the inherent failures of Americas drug policies. I will then examine the pros and cons of marijuana legalization and its effects on society and America as a whole.

To understand why marijuana is illegal in the first place we must look back at how marijuana was viewed in the early part of last century when the practice of smoking it first became widespread in the 10s. This was during the great social experiment of alcohol prohibition. Marijuana use was highest among people who also used opiates, primarily recent immigrants. In the 10s, the common belief that immigrants were inhumane and violent included a strong belief that marijuana was part of the cause (Wikman 15). Since marijuana was associated with opiates and those who use them, marijuana was quickly defined as a narcotic (Musto 11). By 17 all states had passed anti-marijuana legislation, the same year the federal government created the Marijuana Tax Act (NCMDA 17). Marijuana was outlawed in 17 as a repressive measure against Mexican workers who crossed the border seeking jobs during the Depression. The specific reason given for the outlawing of the hemp plant was its supposed violent effect on the degenerate races, this is actual testimony of Bureau of Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger, in testimony before Congress in hearings on the Marijuana Tax Act of 17 (Whitebread 15). During this time no research was conducted on marijuana and its effects, nevertheless it was almost universally assumed that marijuana was a narcotic, caused psychological dependence, provoked violent crime, and led to insanity (Wikman 15).

6 years later it is still illegal to possess marijuana in the United States by order of the federal government. If the purpose of prohibition is to eliminate the use of a substance, then marijuana is certainly another example of how prohibition fails (Wikman 15). In 17, 68.% of all 18-5 year olds had tried marijuana at least once, and 5% said that they were regular users (U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 11). Today after 6 years of prohibition the numbers have fallen to 50% and 1%.

The declaration of independence has been the symbol of American peoples desire to implement democracy in its true form. When Thomas Jefferson wrote all men are created equal, he introduced the ideology of equal opportunity for everybody in pursuit of their individual goal. This country was founded on the principle of equality among the people. The practice of this ideology is what set the American government apart from other governments at the time. However the definition of all men is not as clear as it seems. There have been a lot of discussions about Jeffersons intention when he wrote this famous statement. When examining the conditions that were present at the time, we can say that Jeffersons vision of equality was not inclusive of everyone.

In 1776, slavery was a common practice in United States. The economy was largely dependent on the institution of slavery. The slaves were dark skinned people who were brought from Africa. The difference in the way the look and the color of their skin made them to be outcast. They were given the lowest position in the society. The slaves performed most of the labor work that was considered inappropriate for any white person. The general public held an opinion about blacks to be from an inferior race. There were many people who thought of blacks not to be human beings.

Thomas Jefferson was born into a rich family who had the privilege to own slaves. When he became adult, he inherited his family estate and became a slave owner. In fact, the prosperity of his estate was very much dependent on the slaves he owned. He spent his whole life in the midst of slaves over the course of his lifetime. Surely he was well aware of the sub-human treatment that the slaves were subjected to. It is fair to say that Jefferson was not as much concerned about the inequality that existed between blacks and whites as he was about his economic situation.

During Jeffersons time of public service, he was known to be against slavery. He believed that the institution of slavery violated the core principle of the American Revolution. When he drafted the Declaration of Independence, he inserted a paragraph that calls for the people to abolish slavery, which was taken out by other member of the congress before it was signed. However, his view of anti slavery did not mean he regarded the blacks as equal. In fact, in one of his writings, he sated that blacks are biologically inferior to whites, and he went on to say that if slaves were to become free, they should be separated from whites in order to avoid racial mixing.

Something that I have always felt very passionate about is music. Music is the only thing that has been with me through everything. It has helped shape me into the person I am today. Who I would be without music in my life, I don't know, and honestly, I don't care to know. Music has been perfect for every situation in my life so far. It can make me feel happy, excited, or relaxed.

When I've had a bad day, and I just want to cheer up, all I have to do is turn on my Blind Melon or Tom Petty CD. This music never fails to put a smile on my face. It literally makes my head feel lighter, makes me breath a little deeper, and gives me the feeling of walking on air. If I close my eyes and concentrate on the lyrics, the worries of my day just float right out of my head. Tom Petty brings back so many memories of nights out with the girls when we drove around singing as loud as we could. Those were such fun times, every time I listen to Tom Petty's songs I just get happy. Blind Melon's lyrics are so true to life. Their music makes me realize a lot; it's very refreshing to me.

When I'm getting ready to meet friends to go out and have fun, I always give myself a little kick by playing some Led Zeppelin or The Doors. The sounds that come from a guitar absolutely amaze me. Nothing gets me going more than listening to the amazing music by Led. It always makes me want to dance around and sing really loud. Music by The Doors just speaks to me. I have always been a huge fan of this group. Their music blows me away. When I turn on The Doors and let Jim Morrison's voice sink into my head, I can't do anything but get excited. After hearing the first note of his voice, I am always ready to get out and have a good time.

When I come home from school ready to rip all of my hair out, I try to keep myself under control until I can reach my CD player. Any time I'm stressed out or tense, all I need to relax is a good Pink Floyd song. I grew up listening to this music, so it puts me at ease. Pink Floyd's music and lyrics are so intense, I don't even have to think about anything. I just lay back and let the sounds float in my head. His smooth voice has served as my everlasting backrub on countless occasions. If I feel uncomfortable in any way, and I need to calm down and relax, The Beatles will do the trick within seconds of pushing the play button. My dad has always loved The Beatles, and played them constantly during my childhood. I think songs by this group are the songs I've heard the most in my life. They are so familiar; their music makes me feel very comfortable. I feel so at home when I'm listening to them, like I'm exactly where I need to be. Music by The Beatles is so comforting to me, they will put my right to sleep.

This year, the year 00 we have come together to celebrate one hundred years of African American success. We come to commemorate one hundred years of struggles and achievements. From the establishment of the NAACP to the fight for Civil Rights in the sixties, we have witnessed racial promotion become more common in the African American communities. Towards the early mark of the century it was common for African Americans to promote racial marginalism. It is now visible, one hundred years later, that we have stepped away from marginalism.

As we reflect upon the centennial achievements, we are obligated to think of such achievements as the NAACP, Civil Rights Movement, African Americans in music, drama, sports, and government. However, we tend to neglect African American journals. As we overlook African American Journals we do not see that African American journals, at the beginning of the Centennial Reflection, created African American readers. Such journals such as The Messenger, The Opportunity, The Crisis, and The North Star not only created African Americans writers but African American readers.

The last one hundred years comprise of several "African American Time Periods. " These "time periods" are From Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance. This age is from the Emancipation Proclamation to the time in which Alain Locke thought there was a "New Negro." This epoch includes such persons as Booker T. Washington, Charles Chesnut, W.E.B DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, and others. The ensuing period is the Harlem Renaissance, in which we are obliged to commemorate such names as Billie Holliday, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington. But what we fail to see is that the Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of aptitude, or as W.E.B DuBois would say, "The Talented Ten." Which was referred to as "Ten percent of every generation has God given talent." The Talented Ten, was written by W.E.B DuBois book "Souls of Black Folks." The final period was Realism, Naturalism, and Modernism. This was between the period of 140 to 160. This included such anamnesis as the Civil Rights Movement and Voters Registration law being passed.

The Harlem Renaissance has become a time for remembrance, and recognition. This outstanding day in age is now known as a period for phenomenal literature, musical, and artistic vigor and creativity in the U.S. The Harlem Renaissance produced sophisticated explorations of black American life and culture that revealed and stimulated a new confidence and racial pride and promotion.

I'm writing this paper to address two specific Supreme Court Decisions that have had a major impact on an individual's Constitutional Rights. The Bill of Rights, which protects all citizens from government infringement, was violated in these two cases but rectified by Supreme Court action. The two cases that I will address are Powell v. Alabama, which occurred in 1 in Alabama, and Gideon v. Wainwright, which occurred in Florida in 16.

In Powell v. Alabama nine black youths were arrested and charged with the rape of two white girls. The offense is said to have been committed on a freight train traveling through Alabama. A fight took place between the nine black youths and seven white boys and two white girls. The white boys were thrown off the train and a message was sent ahead reporting the fight. A sheriff's posse met the train in Scottboro, Alabama and the posse seized the black youths. The record, of the case, indicates that all of the black youths were ignorant and illiterate and all of them were residents of other states. The "boys" (as they were referred to) were kept under military protection because of the hostility in the community. Immediately after the indictment the "boys" were arraigned and plead not guilty, they were not asked whether they were able to employ counsel, or wished to have counsel appointed or whether they had friends or relatives who could assist.

Powell v. Alabama was the first of the ensuing rape trials. Powell's argument addressed the lack of legal representation that he was given. The day of the trial, the attorney appointed to his case refused to represent him; the judge ordered any attorney present in the court room to serve as the boy's legal counsel and they all refused. Once counsel willing to represent him was found, the attorney had no time to review the case and only half an hour to meet with his client before the hearing. Because of the inadequate defense, Powell was sentenced to die along with his eight friends.

The issue before The Supreme Court was the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment incorporates the right to counsel in a capital case? The Supreme Court voted yes (7-) and reversed the verdict because of its belief that poor people facing the death penalty must be provided with counsel, stating "…there is a certain principal of Justice which adhere to the very idea of free government, which no [State] may disregard." Justices Butler and McReynolds dissented on the facts that the record failed to reveal that the petitioners had been deprived of any rights guaranteed by the Federal Constitution and thought the judgement should be affirmed.

Women often play important dramatic roles in novels. In Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford, an attractive, confident, African-American woman is an unfortunate victim in two of her marriages. She is beaten by her husband until she packs up her things and leaves. Despite poor treatment, her character and integrity grow and develop. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby takes place in the 10's, a time of rebellious behavior and living life according to the new found American Dream. In Gatsby's novel, the women are solely dependent on money. They strive for it and will go to great lengths to obtain it. When comparing both of these novels, the women are portrayed as greedy, defiant, and trying to find their inner selves.

In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, a beautiful woman, is very corrupt. She uses her daughter as a show toy. Whenever company comes to visit, she wants her little girl to put on an act for everyone. This is symbolic of Daisy's life She is kept in the closet until it's time to show off for company, then she becomes alive and personable. She views herself as sophisticated and smart, while really she is the opposite! Daisy says, I know. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything…Sophisticated God, I'm sophisticated (Fitzgerald, 8)!"

Daisy's arrogance is shown in this quote. She seems to be so smart, but at the same time does not know her husband is having an affair with another woman. Daisy married her husband, Tom, solely for his money and social status.

The women in both novels are also portrayed as extremely foolish and easily used by men. Myrtle and Daisy are both excellent examples. Daisy is foolish because she does not know about Tom's affair with Myrtle, and Tom is degrading Myrtle by his selfish actions. Both Daisy and Myrtle rely solely on money and fame. Daisy always tries to be the center of attention and Myrtle is obsessed with money. Daisy blurts out that she thinks a girl should be foolish when she talks about her daughter, "I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool (Fitzgerald, 50)". Daisy uses her daughter as a play toy. She shows her off when her friends are around, but she actually never communicates with her. Daisy becomes very suspicious about Tom and Myrtle. To Tom, Myrtle is a game. He uses her for fun and never intends on having a long-lasting relationship with her. Tom does not treat her with respect, yet she continually returns to his side. Daisy lives in a fantasy world. She can never escape the utopia she sees in her mind. She wants more money, and that's what keeps her alive.

A Hero Of Our Time

A Hero Of Our Time, by Mikhail Lermontov contains four stories about an interesting character named Pechorin. Pechorin's adventures bring out the many different characteristics he contains. One of Pechorin's characteristics that stands out in my mind is his selfish attitude towards women. The story of Bela and Princess Mary, are the two main stories that deal with Pechorin's encounters with women. In the first story "Bela," Pechorin seems to think that Bela is a prize to be won. In the second story "Princess Mary," Pechorin leads two women to believe he loves them. Through these two narratives Pechorin is seen as an insincere and selfish person. However, there are a few exceptions in which he seems to be real in his feelings towards the women.

The impression I get from the story of Bela and Princess Mary is that Pechorin believes getting women to fall in love with him is a game, which he always has to win. Pechorin stops at nothing. He designs a plan to make Bela fall for him, once his plan works he gets bored with Bela causing her great pain. Later when Pechorin decides he has feelings for her again it is too late because she dies. In Princess Mary, Pechorin loves a woman named Vera claiming that she is the only woman who has ever been able to understand him. In order for Pechorin and Vera to be accepted Princess Mary must like him. In doing so I think Pechorin takes it too far. I don't think it was necessary for him to lead Princess Mary on as much as he did. Pechorin only had to become friends with Princess Mary to be accepted. He didn't need to lead Princess Mary to believe that he loved her. Pechorin is a very selfish person, and only thinks of himself. He plays with the women's emotions and doesn't think twice about the heartache he causes them. Pechorin's attitude towards the women makes me believe he wants what he can't have and needs to make sure he can win their love. Once Pechorin gets what he wants he becomes uninterested and shows no more interest towards them. At one point in the book Pechorin even admits to his thoughtless actions. Pechorin asks if evil can really be that attractive. This tells me that Pechorin knows what he is doing in the way he treats the women. I think admitting to being Evil makes the situations even worse. This means Pechorin continues acting the way he does being conscious of his actions.

Pechorin's attitude is one that many people today share. There are many selfish people in this world who only care about themselves, forgetting about others feelings. In today's world people will go to any extent just to get what they want, knocking over anything that may get in their way. Pechorin's character is one that you are able to identify and possibly even relate to in yourself or other people today.

This part of The Wars focuses on the life of the military officers of World War One. It brought out the fact that people from different backgrounds were drawn together for a common cause. Looking back at history, we know that the military in WWI was made up of a few groups of people. The ones who were military personnel previous to WWI, the ones who joined the army due to their patriotic feelings, and the ones who were conscripted into the war. The protagonist, nineteen-year-old Robert Ross, volunteered to join the war, the first one he has ever experienced. Even though he bears the rank of a senior officer that has a batman, he is a rookie at war. He is very innocent; he has never shot another living creature in his life. On the ship coming to war, his first challenged emerged. He had to shoot an injured horse. Given he was an animal lover, killing the horse was truly difficult. But he is a soldier with obligations above all else to the armed forces, and thus carries his task out against his personal wishes.

In this part, there were mainly eight characters. In which, each of them differs from one another. The author uses these eight people to show the diversity of those within the war. Some do things by the book, several carry positive dreams for post-war life style, and others despite their situation keep a pet. Further, a number are scared and believe they were not meant to be in the war.

The first transcript (pp. 101 to 108) about Lady Juliet was really difficult for me. I had to reread and reread it. At first I did not understand why it was placed in the book. However, later I realized that she was one of the people whom remembers about Robert and is willing to talk about him. Due to the fact that she is deeply involved in the story of Robert, Findley probably used her as a bridge for readers to further understand Robert. Moreover, Lady Juliet also gives us the flavor of time. In other words, she is used as a tool to inform readers the point of view of the society at that time.

Up to this point in the book, Findley's writing disgusts me. That is, I disagree with is beliefs and morals. On pages 111 to 112, he indirectly expresses how when boys become very good friends, they can be "in love". On page 112, Findley uses Barbara to explore how women "went through a lot of men and didn't get back to….." This quote gives a reader the impression of how having more than one life-partner is tolerable. I oppose these two beliefs. I do not like how he always talks about homosexuality. In their sophomore to junior year teens start getting ready for one of the most exciting moments of their lives. This is getting prepared to receive their driver's license.

Because the majority are 16 during this time they could start to take the different steps that will allow them to have their license. These steps are as follows First you should review the booklet that will prepare you for the written exam. The second step is to go to motor vehicle and take the exam. If you pass the test the same day the front clerk will provide you with a permit license. With this you will be capable of getting enough practice behind the wheel. Now that you have your permit the third step takes place, which is going to the 5-hour in class movie. This movie will teach you the hazards along with how a person should react in case of an emergency. The last step is that before and after confirming an appointment for the road test you should keep on practicing.

The first step that should be take place is reviewing the booklet. When you see it you may think how am I going to learn all of this, but if you take it by parts it becomes easier. One of the most important parts to study are the chapters that describe the intersections and the signs, which you are supposed to distinguish such signs as a stop sign or a yield to right sign and what you should do when you see one. Another section of the book that will be helpful is the alcohol chapters where they discuss how DWI (driving while intoxicated) can affect your brain. Questions such as Which drink intoxicates you the fastest a can of beer, any kind of hard liquor such as whiskey, or a glass of wine? The answer to this is all of them could make you equally drunk because they all have the same amount of alcohol. These kinds of questions can appear in the test regarding this section of the book.

When you feel confident enough you could go and take the written part of the test. It'll take you approximately 0 minutes to finish. Although each person is different, some may take less. The day you have this test try to relax don't stress yourself. I remember feeling nervous the day before the test but if you sleep well the night before and you have studied the book the concern shouldn't be much. Before you begin the clerks will call you up by order and take a picture of you. Next they will make sure you have good vision by making you read the black letters that appear in back of them. With this they will know if you need glasses to be able to drive especially during nighttime. As soon as you hand in the test the clerk informs you if you did well on it. If you have a motor vehicle the clerk gives you a temporary paper that will allow you to start driving accompanied with someone who is eighteen years or older who has a license. After you have sufficient practice, you are permitted during early hours to drive alone from school, the job or to your home.

Astronaut Formal Training

In order to become an astronaut, there are many different training tests and programs you have to take and pass. People wanting to become astronauts begin their formal space transportation system training during the year they become candidates. The candidate starts off by reading manuals and by taking computer-based training lessons on the different Orbiter systems, which range from propulsion to environmental control. Next, the candidates have to do the single system's trainer (SST). In this process, each astronaut is accompanied with an instructor who helps teach about the operations of each Orbiter subsystem. The soon to be formal astronauts, are trained in the SSTs to operate each system, to recognize malfunctions, and to perform corrective actions. After the astronauts complete the SST training program, they begin training in the complex Shuttle Mission Simulators (SMS). The SMS provide the astronauts with knowledge in all the areas of shuttle vehicle operations and in all system tasks having to do with the major flight phases. The major flight phases include prelaunch, ascent, orbit operations, entry, and landing. The orbit training includes payload operation, payload deployment, retrieval, and maneuvers. Some of these parts are taught to the astronauts at various base crew stations.

In the beginning, astronauts use generic training software in the SMS until they are assigned to a specific flight. Approximately ten months before flight, astronauts train on a flight simulator with actual flight-specific training software. During the last eleven weeks, the astronauts also train with the flight controllers in the Mission Control Center (MCC). The astronauts and flight controllers learn to work as a team, solving problems and working together. After the flight assignment, the astronauts are in the SMS for about 00 hours. In addition to all previous training, the astronauts also have to go through programs that work with neutral buoyancy operations in the facility water tank to represent the weightless condition that the astronauts will experience when up in space. They also practice meal preparation, equipment stowage, trash management, and the use of cameras. Astronauts often say that everything in training, besides the noise, vibration of the launch, and experience of weightlessness, are accurately duplicates the space experience. On top of more training, the astronauts who participate in the Russian Space Station Mir program receive extensive training of the Russian language before transferring to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. As you can see, to become an astronaut requires a lot of training in various subjects and programs. However, when an astronaut does complete the training, he or she is then ready for a flight into space, which for many is fulfilling a dream. Hard work and much training is a must in becoming an astronaut.

The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial. The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial as terms of pure, natural, nonrepresentational music prolonged in time. Keats expresses his thoughts and feelings about creation, expression, audience, sensation, thought, beauty, truth, and the fine arts. The Urn is an experiment in thinking about art in terms of pure, artificial, representational visuality extended in space.

The second stanza in Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" begins with the statement, "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." Keats views art as something that is eternal and lets you experience what's happening in the painting. While he cannot actually hear the music of the young man's pipes, he can just imagine how sweet the melody would sound. If one was to hear music played, it would only please him for the duration of the song, but in looking at a painting of a youth playing pipes one can take pleasure in it every time he looks at the painting. Of course, in Keats' time there were no CDs or cassettes. In the same stanza, Keats speaks of the young man's lover. He tells the youth that although he is so close to his lover but cannot kiss her, he shouldn't be upset because they will always love each other and they will never grow old and ugly. Keats treats these painted characters as real people, as if they were living in their own world confined to the edges of the urn. He perceives art as something that is better than real life. Keats goes on to discuss some trees whose branches, he remarks, can never be bare. They will always exist in Spring - always green, Keats enjoys the fact that nature remains the same, and in this particular painting, in its most beautiful state - Spring. The two lovers will always be in love and will always have passionate symptoms including fever, heavy breathing, and dry mouth. He gives very real, very human qualities to these two painted beings. Then in stanza four, Keats describes a religious sacrifice of a cow. But he goes on to contemplate where all of these religious people came from. "What little town by river or sea shore,s emptied of this folk, this pious morn? And, little town, thy streets for evermore/ Will silent be; and not a soul to tell/Why thou art desolate, can e'er return. He goes far beyond the reaches of the actual painting, and wonders about how the now empty village will forever remain silent and desolate. Keats ends the poem by telling the painting that it will live on to serve as a friend to other generations when his generation is long gone and dead.

By using his imagination in interpreting this painting, Keats shows us what he thinks about art. A work of art can mean different things to people, but it remains for many generations to take from it what they will. Keats examines art in some general way abandoning nonrepresentational natural music as his metaphor. on My Greaician Urn will be written from scratch, so you do not have to worry about its originality.

A conversion of our governmental system to an Athenian model would be not only foolish but potentially dangerous to the future of our country as well. It has been suggested that the representative form of government was chosen because of the logistical problems of counting votes in an era with no computers or FedEx. However, in doing research and listening to the biographies of several men present at the Philadelphia convention, it seems clear that the decision was reached with great thought and wisdom.

One advantage of electing an individual to represent a large group of people (and hence several socio-economic groups) is that the representative is beholden to the entire body. Because the representative depends upon the approval of a majority for his continuation in office it is difficult for him/her to favor one faction to the detriment of the others without risk of losing his position. In this way equilibrium is attained in which no group completely dominates another and no minority voice is unheard. It is a credit to the wisdom of the founders that they were able to devise a system which not only accounts for the selfish nature of a man but uses that ambition to its favor!

In contrast, within a democracy the individual owes allegiance only to his own self-interests and beliefs. While many of us purport ourselves to be persons of integrity and fully aware of our civic responsibilities, we seldom hold such lofty opinions of our neighbors. In a country where the poor and middle-class far outnumber the wealthy who would protect the rights of the upper-class? Who would protect the rights of Jews and Muslims to worship in their Synagogues and Mosques? At a time when factions change with the tides, how can the rights of any minority be protected from the whim of the majority? It is interesting to note that we are all, in some way, a minority - it just depends on how you slice the pie. In 188 James Fenimore Cooper wrote, "It is a besetting vice of democracies to substitute public opinion for law. This is the usual form in which masses of men exhibit their tyranny." This seems eerily akin to the "...tyranny of the masses" which Greek philosophers warned of over 000 years earlier. It is similarly disquieting to realize that none of the democracies of ancient times still exists.

Let us suspend distrust in the motives of our fellow man and suppose for the moment that we will all act (read vote) in the best interests of the whole of society. Even were this improbable suspension of belief possible, pure democracy would still face formidable challenges, chief among these being a massive amount of legislation. A cursory review of the 107th Congress web site reveals a mind-numbing workload of Resolutions, 8 Concurrent Resolutions, 81 Joint Resolutions, 610 Bills, and 414 Amendments facing the House of Representatives alone!

Life during the Great Depression was a time of hardship and suffering for Americans nationwide. Many left their homes to search for work, hoping that one day they would be able to settle down on a piece of land of their own. George and Lennie, the two main characters in Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, had to endure these same conditions. The two men wander from ranch to ranch, always winding up on the run because of Lennie's tendency to touch soft things. The two men had to run from Weed, their last job location, because Lennie touched a woman's dress and she complained of harassment. Incidents such as these have always happened before, and it seems to be a reoccurring pattern among the two men. Wherever they go, no matter what they do, something bad always happens to them. Their situation is the same with their new job in Salinas, where George ends up shooting Lennie. The end was inevitable, George could do nothing to avoid it. Fate cannot be altered, the result will be the same no matter what actions are taken.

Steinbeck uses symbolism to show fate and how it plays a part in the lives of George and Lennie. The card game the ranch men play illustrates this. "Lennie reached for a face card and studied it, then he turned it upside down and studied it. "Both ends the same he said," he said. "George, why is it both ends the same?" (page 55). We know the cards symbolize fate and the lives of the two men. This statement shows that no matter which way you turn the card, (the lives of the men) the result will always be the same. The lack of control can be seen here. Steinbeck has Lennie realize this to show the reader that what has happened before will happen again. Another example in the card game the men play is when_______________-6 sent commentary goes here

Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show how unavoidable fate is. One event that is foreshadowed is the death of Curley's wife. "Lennie sat in the hay and looked at the little dead puppy in front of him" (page 85). The killing of the puppy (and the mice in the beginning of the book) show how Lennie is not in control of his actions. Even though he does not mean it, he ends up killing Curley's wife. Another example of how Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show the fate of Lennie is when Candy's dog is shot. Carlson offers to do the job. "If you was to shoot him right in the back of the head-" he leaned over and pointed, "-right there, why he'd never know what hit him." (page 45). Candy is devoted to the animal, just as George is devoted to Lennie, yet he must see the creature killed just as Lennie is at the end of the book. Lennie, like the dog, is fated to die by being shot in the back of the head. Also, foreshadowing shows the works of fate when Lennie gets in a fight with Curley. "_____________________" The pan

Fate determines what happens in life, and nothing can be done to alter it. Foreshadowing and symbolism are two ways in which Steinbeck shows how fate plays a part in the lives of George and Lennie. Steinbeck's view of fate applies to the world around us.

What Devices and Techniques Does Willy Russell Employ in "Blood Brother"? How Successful Are They In Communicating The Themes & Ideas Of The Play?

To start a play each dramatist has to make a number of decisions. They have to decide what they want the viewers to think of the play, whether it should be believable or just to convey a theme and for the audience to sit in judgment of the play. In this play Russell decided to make the audience sit in judgement, and they were sitting in judgement of why the twins died, and he did so by using a series of techniques and devices to make sure there was a barrier, to make us concentrate on how the play explores the inequalities of the class system. Blood Brothers was a creative experiment, where two brothers are split at birth and placed into different classes and see how it affected their lives. This does indeed sound like a Greek myth, but there are no Greek myths about twins secretly parted at birth, and that die on the 'self-same day' after learning the truth about their background. This shows us that the underlying themes in this play are of superstition and class.

Most of the techniques and devices used in Blood Brothers have been used before. Aristotle was a Greek playwright born in 84 BCE. He believed that every play should follow a series of unties, such as it should follow real time, Blood Brothers does not fit into this category as the storyline spreads over a period of 5 yrs. He also believed that a lot of the play should remain in the same place but blood brothers does not follow this rule either as the mid way through the play the storyline shifts to the country. The third unity that Aristotle devised was that there should be a lot of action in the play. Blood Brothers succeeds in this criteria as the very first page of the play is about twins born and separated on the same day, however the evidence against blood brothers following Aristotle's unities is too great so blood brother must follow different techniques instead.

A 0th century German playwright, Bertolt Brecht, devised epic theatre, which is not meant to create a realistic situation. Epic theatre had both tragedy and comedy. Blood brothers have both of these in the play for instance at the end of the play both of the twins are shot dead. Brecht wanted to make the audience learn something and this is exactly what Russell did. Blood brothers can fit into several categories of what sort of play it could be. It could be also a ballad opera. John Gay who wrote Beggars opera thought up ballad opera. Beggar's opera is an attack on society as is Blood Brothers. Russell attacks the British class system. It could also fit into the category of a comedy as it has several jokes in it. Traditionally, comedies do not end in death but Russell successfully blends comedy and tragedy. Throughout the play we experience different types of humour, such as the use of a pun when Mickey and Eddie are discussing Sammy's head. Mickey tells Edward about Sammy having a plate put in his head after an accident

A DBMS is a program, or a collection of programs, that allow the end user to

more effectively manage the database. A DBMS can be divided into three

subsystems. There include the Design Tools Subsystem, the Run-Time

Subsystem and the DBMS Engine.

College papers on DBMS

The Design Tools subsystem includes tools specific to the design of the

database components as well as its applications. These programs include

tools to aid in the creation and management of its Tables, Forms, Queries

and Reports.

The Run-Time Subsystem is what links the components that were created with

the Tools Subsystem and the data. Our book gives an example of a form that

is supposed to show the information contained in a field within a record of

the database. When the form is opened, it is the Run-Time Subsystem that

collects the data from the record and returns the information to the field

within the form.

The DBMS Engine is the backbone of the DBMS. It works together with the

other two subsystems and translates the request into commands that the

operating system can understand and execute. These include the calculating

of numbers as well as the display of the information to the screen.

Four components of database application are its Forms, Queries, Reports and

Application Programs. While the forms, queries and reports can be generated

through the Tools Subsystem. The application programs must be created, or

written, in a language that the DBMS can understand and link to.

1. Forms are the graphical user interface between the DBMS and the end user.

These forms can be used to display or update the record data information

within a database. These updates can include entering new records, deleting

or making changes to existing records. Forms make it easier for the end

user to accomplish their desired task without having to understand the

dynamics of what they are doing.

. Quires are how a user would query the data within a database to return a

specific ordering of the information. An example would be if the user

wanted to know all of the names and phones numbers of the restaurants in

their area code but not the addresses. A query would be able to pull the

desired information out of the database tables.

. Reports are the outputs of these quires. The data collected from a query

could be exported in a formatted sequence to a computer screen, a file or

directly to a printer.

4. Application Programs are code that is written to interact with a

database. These programs can be used to update a database or manipulate the

data within them. An example of an application program would be a C++

program that is used to connect to a database and update records. You can

also use application programming when designing forms to control the

interaction with an end user. Please note that this sample paper on DBMS is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Jeff Jacoby's, "Bring Back the Flogging", argues that flogging should be a method of corporal punishment that should be reconsidered by our criminal justice system. Within his opening argument, Jacoby uses two methods to sustain the readers' attention sex and violence. Jacoby describes Richard Hopkins sentence, in 16, for selling arms and gunpowder to the Indians as being "'whipt, & branded with a hott iron on one of his cheeks'". He also mentions Hannah Newell conviction of adultery in 164, and her court ordered sentence of "fifteen stripes Severely to be laid upon her naked back at a common whipping post. Unfortunately, her convicted companion, Lambert Despair's, sentence was more severe with twenty-five lashes and "that on the next Thursday Immediately after Lecture he stand upon the Pillory for… a full hower With Adultry In Capitall letters upon his brest". However, Jacoby's attention grabbing introduction does not make up for his unconvincing argument to replace flogging with prison sentences. Imprisonment is a more rational and humane way to rehabilitate those members in our society that can not abide by its rules and regulations

In Jacoby's essay, he attempts to persuade the reader that prison terms are not considered a severe enough punishment by today's standards, because it "has become our penalty of choice for every offense in the criminal code". He argues that because this form of punishment is given out so commonly it has become glamorized and therefore, does not successfully install enough fear of the possible repercussions in people to keep the number of crimes down. He supports this argument by stating that "a stint in prison [has] become(s) a sign of manhood, a status symbol", as if it is a clich.

The essay then goes on to mention that societies tax payers pay $0,000 per inmate, per year on average to place them in correctional institutions only for them to learn other tricks of the criminal trade from other inmates.

In Jacoby's attempt to convince the reader of the benefits of corporal punishment he plays upon common assumptions, that are based on ignorance, as a breeding ground for persuasion without attempting to clarify the real reason behind some actions. For example, he mentions some felons are "not locked up at all" because the "penal system is choked to bursting" with felons. The method used by Jacoby attempts to ridicule the American criminal justice system by arguing that fifty-eight percent of murders and ninety-eight percent of burglaries do not result in a prison term. The language that is used degrades criminals, as if they were less human, which can make it easier accept the concept of publicly flogging them. He uses statistics that can be interpreted differently, such as "fifty-eight percent of all murders do not result in a prison term"; a sentence like this can be interpreted to fit your bias, whichever it may be.

I did not expect we will be the generation experiencing the war. When the Gulf war broke out, it did not feel like now. Those media¡¯s power was great even before the war started. Reading through Newsweek article every week, and watching TV news, I could know what was happening in the world, and the current situation with Iraq.

Starting the war with Iraq, it was not easy from the beginning. President Bush had to get an agreement from the UN, but the support was not there. Even now, some countries are still against war, and hate Bush for doing this. Media says if Bush did not break out the war, somebody would have done it. I already knew that Saddam was an evil dictator, but with the articles of journalists and pictures that were taken at Iraq, it made me feel so bad about Iraqi people who have to live there life in horror.

Opinions about the war was so different by the countries. South Korea, which has many anti-Americanism throughout the country, they were mad about Bush¡¯s decisions. I even saw a flash movie that was satirizing Bush¡¯s speech about the war. The proof materials Powell has shown was accurate enough to attack Iraq, and Bush has given time for Saddam to escape. How can the information be so different for the same war?

Overall, my opinion about this war with Iraq is that it just ends as quick as possible. I am not going to say Bush did a wrong jab because I think he needs people¡¯s support at this time. Whatever the consequences are, the war has started, and I just hope we don¡¯t have to see anymore terrible deaths. I know there will be more deaths and wounds, but I just hope those numbers be small as possible.
