The Wild-Goose Chase My Description and Opinions on Annie Dillards The Chase

Dillard's essay tells the story of an event in her childhood during winter when she was seven. Before describing this she gives us a brief history of herself as a child. She used to play both football and baseball with the boys during the summer. These boys were slightly older than Dillard and she seems to have prided herself on being as rough and tough as any of them. When it was too cold for football and baseball and there was enough snow on the ground, she would play snowball fights with the boys instead. Since she describes herself as having a "boy's arm" (7) for throwing baseballs, I imagine she was also formidable with a snowball in hand. In the event she describes in the essay she was with a group of boys waiting to throw their snowballs at passing cars. Then when one heralded its approach by the sound of snow chains clanking on the pavement, they readied themselves to pelt it with snow as normal. But, when they let loose, the driver pulled over and ran toward them. Soon the group of children split off and ran in different directions and Dillard was left being chased by this man with another boy ahead of her. Though she expected this driver to give up after scaring the children into fleeing he carried on running them down. He chased them over and around ten blocks before he caught them and at that point had to wait awhile to catch his breath before he could even start to speak. Then, with his suit covered in snow, he proceeded simply to tell them off. For a seven-year-old this was a huge anticlimax after the excitement of a chase all that happened was a routine dressing down.

I really like this essay. It's a very good description of the thoughts and feelings going through a child's mind. Which is an amazing feat considering the author wrote the essay many years after the fact. Though being chased by this man was frightening it obviously was also an exciting and exhilarating experience for her as well. She describes what happens as if it's a victory for her as a child, she got a kick out of being chased and all the man who chased her could do was scold a couple of little kids who aren't listening to him. Though at the same time she admired this man, a "sainted, skinny, furious redheaded man" that "would never give up" (100). She admired him for knowing "what I thought only children . . . knew" that you had to "fling yourself at what you're doing" () with the singlemindedness of a child. Following the tragedy of September 11, America has launched a 1st century war to eradicate the threat of international terrorism. Terrorism, long a problem for many nations of the world, was all but foreign to U.S soil. September 11th was the first major attack on mainland American soil since the War of 181. The barbarity of the crime, the toll on innocent lives, and our lack of preparedness for the threat has scared the country to unity, and has scared the rest of the free world into assisting President Bush in finding the evildoers, smoking them out of their caves, and bringing them to justice.

The United States has started in Afghanistan, targeting Osama bin Laden, his al Qaeda network, and the Taliban government that supported and sheltered him. Clearly, this was the appropriate start to the campaign, as bin Laden and his associates were directly responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But Afghanistan is not the appropriate place to finish. Terrorism is not a problem of one man, country, or government. It is a threat that stretches over the entire world and it must be dealt with as such. Terrorism will not end with the death of Osama bin Laden, nor the destruction of al Qaeda, nor the downfall of the Taliban.

Admittedly, the United States swift and decisive victory demonstrates our resolve and power to those sympathetic to bin Laden, his cause, and his methods. Perhaps Lebanon, Yemen, Somalia, the Sudan, and Libya will be scared straight and will cease their support for terrorists who wish to attack the U.S., Israel, or any other free nation. Nevertheless, there is one country and there is one man whom no Afghan adventure will ever deter from terrorism.

Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is the most dangerous man in the world. While distanced from Islamic extremists, he has not stopped developing biological, chemical and nuclear weapons. His connection to September 11th is unsure, but assuredly he would have done the same thing if he could have. Saddam has readily used weapons of mass destruction against his own people. He has no reason to love the United States or the Presidents Bush. Despite U.S. air strikes and no-fly zones, he has refused to allow the U.N. weapons inspectors into Iraq. Can we doubt his willingness to use such weapons against his neighbors or the U.S.?

For another consecutive year, Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company takes the lead in the commercials. From sixty one available spots, their products occupied 10 of them. The first commercial that appeared was probably the most liked by the audience. The name of the commercial was Replay and was sponsored by Budweiser beer. I think that with this ad the company was targeting mostly men of all ages, income and social classes. Even though it was a senseless commercial, it at least brought a grin to your face. It was a simple commercial that did not try too hard and was liked by many people. It sort of reflected that simple moments like this one can be enjoyed in life. Representing the brand image was their main goal and I think that they actually did pretty well using their typical icons which where the Clydesdales. Overall, the commercial placed the beer in a situation with so much power that no matter how dumb their commercials get, they stay with you.

The other nine commercials aired by this corporation were not that good. In my opinion, the one described above was the best and it was also different from what they are used to doing.

Pepsi was also a company who decided to try their luck at the Super Bowl commercials. The first product they advertised was "Pepsi with a Twist." This commercial was highly advertised before it was aired and it created many thumbs down after it was seen. The ad portrayed a nightmare which Ozzy Osbourne has involving his family and the Osmonds as well. Pepsi was actually pretty smart in involving the Osbournes in the ad, since their show has been such a success the past year. I think that this ad was mainly targeted to the young audience who follows and watches the show. In this case, the corporation is also mostly selling the brand image. Their ad's objective was probably to advertise the drink, but I think that they did a better job advertising the Ozbourne show. At no point did they describe how the drink tasted or how would you feel if you took a sip. Personally, I think that the production value of this ad was great because Ozzy created major attraction, but he did not do a good job with the product. In addition to that, without offending anyone, I simply cannot stand Ozzy Osbourne.

On the other hand, I think that this company made a great job promoting their new drink Sierra Mist. The ad with the dog peeing on the fire hydrant was hilarious! They were targeting mainly younger people from all income and class levels, since they consume more soft drinks. Also unlike, the Ozzy commercial, here you did get a chance to g

Many years ago America's youth was dazzled by the simplest forms of entertainment such as jump ropes, bicycles, and swing sets. Now, as time has progressed, our children have quickly been engulfed by new forms of technology. Instead of board games and kickball, video games are now the primary source of entertainment for the extremely impressionable youth of today.

Video games that were first marketed in the 170's were slowly accepted. It wasn't until the introduction of Nintendo in the early 180's that video games really begin to catch on. When video games first became widely accepted, the content was harmless. Pac Man and Pong were relatively non-violent games that were also among the most popular (Cesarone 1).

With today's technology, video games are becoming increasingly more violent. In 00 Resistance Records released a game called Ethnic Cleansing, which was marketed towards teenage white males. According to Kellogg,a journalist for News World Communications, the game's object is to destroy a race of "subhumans" composed of African Americans and Latinos. Players are to navigate through an urban area that looks remarkably like New York City in order to complete their murder mission. Kellogg reports that the African American victims yell monkey and ape noises while they are being executed, while the Latinos yell such things as "I'll take a siesta now" and "Aye caramba". Ethnic Cleansing has an extremely high amount of racial battering within the game. Kellogg explains that as a "white supremacy" advocate the player would run through the subways finding Jews, while passing "National Alliance" posters (1). This violent, racist game targets teenagers encouraging white supremacy and a global race war.

With games like Ethnic Cleansing on the market, one cannot help but wonder if children are affected by all the violence in the media. Cesarone from the U.S Department of Education examined 57 seventh and eight grade students in order to find their preference of video games. The most popular games contained fantasy violence and were preferred by a large percentage of the adolescents. Research by Cesarone states that around "6% of male students played video games for 1- hours a week, while % played -6 hours a week." Female students also participated in playing video games at home. According to Cesarone's study, "4% played 1- hours and 15% played -6 hours a week" (1).

Edna Pointellier is a woman who has followed the rules of her sociery all her life. She was an unthinking child in those days, just following a misleading impulse without question, just as those around her wished her to be (Chopin 1-). When she realises that she is not her own person, she begins a quest to find herself, and in this quest, is alienated from her society. This estrangement only serves to point out the disparity of the female spirit during the Victorian Era and the need for freedom.

Like most women of this era, Edna is unable to make decisions for herself without arising suspicion. Her only true act of defiance is choosing to marry Leonce Pontellier, but even he turns out to be a disappointment who closes, the portals forever behind her unpun the realm of romance and dreams and earns her anger from her father and sister Margaret (4). As Edna starts to realise her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the worth within and about her Ednas father tells Leonce, Authority [and] coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife (17, 4). When she starst to make statements about how she could not sacrifice herself for her children, her neighbor claims, a woman who would give her life for her children cound do no more than that -- your Bible tells you so in an attempt to give her a sense of responsibility and family (6). Everything she does is challenged in some way, filling her with an indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some familiar part of her consciousness... like a shadow, like a mist passing across her souls summer day and it scares her, she doesnt know what to think (8).

Without knowledge of her actions, Edna begins to think and feel as she likes. A good example of this awakening occurs when she first learns to swim. She wanted to swim far out, where no woman has swum before... she would not join the groups in their sports and bouts, but intoxicated with her newly conquered power, she swam out alone (6). This statement could also be construed as a metaphor; she relishes her new emotional freedom, rare to women of the time, and wants to use it. She swims out farther than any woman before her, or, she becomes freer than any woman before her, and is unable to handle the burden of her power. Edna began to feel like one who awakens gradually out of a dream, a delicious, grotesque, impossible dream, to feel ... the realities pressing into her soul and the weight of that reality she could not support on her own (41). This is why she becomes attracted to Alicee Arobin; he provides her with stability, without hindering her or her creativity. Chopin, Kate. The Awakening

I feel that this school of thought is a particularly negative discourse, if not a highly pessimistic one! However it would be naïve too ignore it, as it is clear that nuclear proliferation is a highly volatile and explosive situation. This does not warrant the acclaim the media has given it though, as there are far more devastating and relevant threats that are facing the planet already. i.e. HIV/Aids, terrorism, etc

When we critically assess the given texts, it is important that we understand the context of all of them. As they are with out a doubt voiced within and around a specific discourse and ideology. This being that throughout the given texts there are a lot of uncertainty, speculation, and here say. More important than this is the fact that throughout the readings there is a realisation that nuclear weapons bring about a certain sort of power and control. This is formed within the dichotomy of both national and international power. There is a consistent sentiment to this throughout the texts, as according to Singh (18), nuclear weapons remain a key indicator of state and international power. (This becomes plausible if we consider the most powerful countries both economically and politically are the countries that have the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons. i.e. United States of America, Britain all have a substantial amounts of nuclear weapons, this is in accordance with the article in 'Time Magazine.'

It is within this paradigm that the answer too the question posed lies. Most countries that are still acquiring their nuclear arsenals, like India for example are doing so with a particular discourse, just as the United States and Britain have done in the past. This being, to invoke the persona that they too are amongst the elite and thus should have the same sort of perceived power and authority enjoyed by the United States and Britain. It is clearly debatable whether these countries will use these weapons of mass destruction, however what is certain is the fact that with nuclear proliferation comes the perceived notion of security as they are able too defend their borders and as such the state. And this is why nuclear proliferation is not the biggest threat to our planet.

When we examine the reasons why certain countries arm themselves we are able too see that it is done for the sake of protection and not for evil. However this sort of stance would be naïve as not all countries that arm themselves do so for protection. Iraq is a good example of this as they in the early 10's used their military power to invade Kuwait. Where as in the Indian example, they were arming themselves so as to strengthen their borders from further attacks from their neighbours and old enemies, Pakistan.

"The Life You Save May Be Your Own," is a dramatic short story written by Flannery O'Connor, which captures the element of trick plotting at the slightest bit. The reader is fooled toward the end of the story, when one of the three main characters, Tom T. Shiftlet, completely leaves his wife, Lucynell Crater, and drives off to a city called Tuscaloosa. He earned the trust of Crater's mother, also going by the name Lucynell Crater, for two things: to gather as much money from them as possible, and to drive off with something he never could afford to have: an automobile. It is an example of clear deception. In addition, the way O' Connor drops the subtle hints of deception throughout the story, is for the reader to find out toward the end, that Shiftlet is up to no good. However, the theme O' Connor makes is powerful. No matter how good a person thinks they are, sometimes, it is them who need the most help.

The story begins with the mother and her daughter (both Lucynell Craters) minding their own business and living their daily lives. Shiftlet is the outside stranger that approaches them. Almost immediately he begins asking questions about their possessions, creating an impression to the reader as if that was all he was interested in. Shiftlet also used a good strategy by conveying a superficial form of innocence, bringing up many of his philosophical beliefs. Because Crater, the mother, was philosophical herself in some ways, he was able to appeal to her.

During their first encounter, as Shiftlet was looking around the house and offering to fix anything that was not functioning properly, "mother Crater" quickly replied how she had no money to offer, just hospitality and care. This was an effort by mother Crater to see what type of man Shiftlet really was. Just on how Shiftlet appeared uninterested in the topic of money to mother Crater at first, this showed her that he might have been a sincere man and worth trusting.

Since Shiftlet, to some extent, earned mother Crater's trust, he was allowed to stay within the vicinity and fix anything he could. He wound up repairing important resources like the fences, a hog pen, the steps to the house, and so on. To even persuade mother Crater that he was a good man, Shiftlet taught a deaf "daughter Crater" how to say the word, "bird." This act, really won the affection of mother Crater. To invest such time into teaching a deaf girl to say a word, displays some integrity on the part of Shiftlet. As he and mother Crater were talking, he began the "money-taking" by suggesting a new fan belt and new bolts to make the car run efficiently. Even though this is true, what the audience does not yet realize is that this is all for him.

The settlers of the new world all came from an area which had similar traditions, lifestyles and practices. Because of this, there were many similarities between different colonies in the New World. In contrast, these settlements were often established by people of different religions and ethnicities. This resulted in slight differences in the way communities carried out their daily lives. Two settlements that are simple to compare and contrast are the Jamestown and Plymouth settlements.

Traveling aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, 104 men landed in Virginia in 1607 at a place they named Jamestown. This was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. They chose their spot in a location they thought would be secure in order to avoid the mistakes of Roanoke. Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. Warm climate and fertile soil allowed large plantations to prosper. Unfortunately, the land was also marshy, humid, and disease-prone. It was on local Indian land, belonging to the dominant chief Powhatan. The settlers that traveled from England were mostly businessmen and not laborers, and fell prey to diseases. Malaria attacked the colony, causing a labor supply because most were either too weak to work or dead. By January 1608, there were only thirty four colonists left. The leader of the colony, John Smith, was the reason Jamestown survived in the end. He organized raids on the local Indians to steal food and kidnap natives.

In 1608 Puritan Separatists immigrated to Holland after being persecuted in England. However, after a number of years the Pilgrims felt that their children were being corrupted by the liberal Dutch lifestyle and were losing their English heritage. On September 160, the Puritans, known as 'pilgrims' before they left, departed with thirty five Puritan Separatists and sixty seven others aboard the Mayflower. The original destination of the Mayflower was at the mouth of the Hudson River, but on December 1,160, they established the settlement of Plymouth on Cape Cod. Plymouth was an area just north of the Cape, outside of the area of the Virginia Company. It provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade. The relations between the Pilgrims and the Indians were not bad, mostly because the native population was weakened by disease. The survival and growth of the colony ultimately depended on the natives' help from Squanto and Samoset. Squanto learned English and eased the tension between the two cultures. The Pilgrims had a poor community, but stayed because they were devoted to religion and they had faith. They did not care how they were viewed by other ambitious colonies to the north.

The Indian National Congress is a political party that led the struggle for the independence of India from the British Empire. It formed the mainstay of the Indian nationalist movement and later dominated the countrys government. Founded in 1885 with a base of support chiefly in the upper-class intelligentsia, the Congress originally advocated limited democratic reforms under British rule. As early as 184 the British India Society was founded in Bengal. Later, in 1851 Rajendra-lal Mitra and Ramgopal Ghose formed the British Indian Association. At about the same time the Bombay Association was started by Juggan Nath Sarkar, Dadabhai Naoroji and others. Poona also organized its public life through the Poona Sarvajanin Sabha.

In 1876 Surendranath Banerjea founded the Indian Association in Bengal. One of the main objects of Surendranath and the Indian Association was the unification of the people of India on the basis of common political interests and aspirations. The Indian Association at that time used to represent and reflect public opinion from Peshawar to Chittagong.

The time had meanwhile become ripe for the formation of an all-India political organization. At the first National Conference at Calcutta held in 188 Surendranath Banerjea suggested that an all-India political organization be formed. In fact, while the second National Conference was being held at Calcutta, the Indian National Congress, the first effective all-India political organization, was established at Bombay. The National Conference later merged itself into the Indian National Congress.

Beginning in 105, it called for swaraj, or self-government, and in 10 it adopted the strategy of Satyagraha (non-violent resistance) devised by Mohandas K. Gandhi, who also widened its support into a true mass movement. By 1, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, the Congress was demanding total independence. During World War II it refused to support the British war effort, launching instead a "Quit India" campaign that led to violent confrontations and prison terms for about 100,000 of its supporters. After India gained independence, in 147, the Congress controlled the central government and most of the Indian state governments for 0 years. In 155 it adopted a programme of democratic socialism. The party split in 16, but the dominant faction (the New Congress Party) remained in office under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Voted out in 177, it again split; Indira Gandhis Congress (I) Party (I for Indira) was again in power from 180 to 18, from 184 under Rajiv Gandhi after his mother Indiras assassination. After a brief interim, Congress (I) was returned to power in 11 under P. V. Narasimha Rao, but was ousted again in 16 amid public disaffection with party corruption and increasing support for locally based, left-wing reformist parties and the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

If I seem distant, it's because I find peace in being alone. Life presents each one of us with trials, tribulations, and triumphs that help to make us who we are, guide us down the path we must take. Each human being has been given a wonderful gift - the right to choose his or her own path in life. This gift has been bestowed on us by a being greater than ourselves, and, yet, we have been so graciously created in that being's image. In choosing that path we show that indeed we are blessed in that we have been created to reflect this godly image. Our deeds make us true brave hearts as each one of us takes on the challenges that may lie within that path of life we each have chosen. On occasion we may falter, nonetheless we strive to gain back that momentum to our chosen path. Our willful passion for life and happiness keeps each one of us looking for that bright horizon, that brand new day.

As we look in a mirror and see our own reflection, do we see that godly image we have so graciously been created from? Can each one of us truly say that we have led a life reverent of this image? Indeed not, we are free souls given the most unalienable right since birth, the right to choose our life as we delight. So then why is there no conviction within the self to remain in this delight? The elixir of life should be enough to sustain us in the realm of happiness, but it has not. We are downtrodden by the very same trials and tribulations that should make us stronger. Trials and tribulations that when we slumber should be washed away with our dreams. In our dream state we are given another world to live in. Another world where we can influence the outcome of these same trials and tribulations we are faced with to make them triumphs in the world we wake up to.

In this reality we can now become true to the image we were created from so as not to be held in contempt of the lives we choose to live.

My goal is to teach children how to write a story. I want to inspire the little spark from within to become a fire that cannot be put out once the fingers touch the keyboard or the pen or pencil hits a sheet of paper. When I am in a classroom, I close my eyes and listen to the scratch, scratch, scratch of a pencil writing against a white sheet of paper.

Definition of corrosion

Corrosion is the oxidation of metals by certain substances (mostly water and oxygen) in the environment. A metal corrodes when it gives up its electrons and loses strength and elasticity. Some common examples of corrosion include rusting of iron, surface oxidation of aluminium, tarnishing of silver and verdigris on copper. Corrosion can be classified into two categories

• Dry corrosion where the metal is oxidised directly by atmospheric oxygen.

• Wet corrosion is when the presence of water and air accelerates the process of corrosion.

The condition which rusting of irons occurs

For iron and for any other metal, any region of electrochemical corrosion must have

a) an anode where oxidation occurs

b) a cathode where reduction occurs

c) a meta path for electron and

d) an electrolyte.

The rusting of iron will be hastened by the following conditions

1. The presence of oxygen is large concentrations at the surface of iron which will accelerate the corrosion of another area with less oxygen if there is electrical contact between them. This helps to explain why corrosion pits in iron can be very deep. Since the bottom of the pit has less oxygen than the top, it will act as an anode and corrosion in the pit will be accelerated.

. Pure iron is more resistant to corrosion than impure iron. Electrochemical cells can occur if, for example, copper is present. Copper can serve as a cathode half-cell since its atoms are less readily oxidised than iron atoms. The electrons travel through the iron and the ions through a moisture film to complete the circuit.

. Iron corrodes more readily where ions in the metal lattice have been distorted by stress.

Corrosion prevention

There are two basic ways of protecting metal surfaces from corrosion physical protection and galvanic protection.

• Physical protection eg. Paint and lacquer. The paint and acquer acts as a physical barrier which stops oxygen and water from making contact with the metal.

• Galvanic protection eg Cathodic protection. Ther are two main types of cathodic protection presently in use.

1. Sacrificial anode. Steel pipes, tanks ans ships are protected

galvanically by attaching lumps of magnesium or zinc to the

steel. The more active metal is more readily oxidised and

behaes as a sacrificial anode, whilst the steel is cathodically

protected.

. Impressed current. Metals such as iron can be connected to

the negative pole of a power source such as a battery.

Electrons are pushed onto the iron which is then cathodically

Protected. Please note that this sample paper on Corrosion is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Chaucer's Prologue

Chaucer presents a very positive picture of the pilgrims in the ruling class. Chaucer only shows respect to one religious figure and looks down upon the other five. Chaucer includes good qualities in knights and squires that he describes.

Qualities Chaucer includes in his Knights are honor, loyalty, respect, chivalry, generosity and courtesy. One page , Chaucer says "There was among us a brave Knight, who had loved chivalry, truth, and honor, generosity and courtesy from the time of his first horse back rides." Qualities in the squire were that of love, lust, strength, and happiness. Chaucer explains "All day he sang or played the flute; in fact, he was as joyful as the month of May", on page .

Cheap college papers on Chaucer's "THe Canterbury Tales" Prologue

Chaucer's view of the clergy class is not as positive as his view of the ruling class. The only religious figure presently positively is the Parson. Page 11 reads "Rich in holy thoughts and works, he was a learned man, a cleric, who wished to preach Christ's gospel truly and teach parishioners devoutly. He was benign, wonderfully intelligent, extremely patient..."

Chaucer's religious ideal is expressed through the parson. Chaucer described the Prioress as "Very much interested in etiquette. She was so kind and full of pity that she would week if she saw a dead or bleeding mouse." The monk loved hunting. He did not believe in learning, and spent more time hunting. The friar was described as "a licensed beggar, and a very gay man. He found husbands for many young women at his own expense. Well lived and intimate, and had more power than the parish priest, courteous and humbly helpful." The pardoner was amiable, "in his bag had a pillowcase which had served as a veil for our Lady; He has no beard, feigned with flattery and tricks…made monkeys of the parson and people" on page 15. The summoner was a friendly person. He controlled all young people of the diocese in his own way. He spoke only Latin, and knew philosophy well.

In conclusion, Chaucer presents a very positive picture of the pilgrims in the ruling class, and Chaucer's religious ideal is expressed through the parson. Reading Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" can help many students and people everywhere learn more about life during the Middle Ages. Chaucer's prologue is especially helpful because it introduces all the characters in an organized manor. Please note that this sample paper on Chaucer's "THe Canterbury Tales" Prologue is for your review only. The struggle between good and evil has plagued the world since the dawn of time. This epic battle is also evident in literature written throughout the ages. Three books are to be examined in this essay, each written during distinctly different times. One from the ancient times of the roman empire, another from the growing totalitarian Russian state, and the last from the trenches of World War I. Each book contains in its own fashion a clash of the powers of righteousness and the powers of sin. Evil be it an idea, a object, a person or a people is present in some form in every one of these novels. Malevolence greatly affects the characters, plot and outcome in Erich Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, George Orwell's Animal Farm, and Gloria Miklowitz's Masada.

In Remarque's war narrative, All Quiet on the Western Front, the dismays of war are chronicled by a German solider named Paul Baumer. As Paul fights in the trenches he comes to grasp the futility and vainness of war. He realizes that war tears families down their most secret seams, it puts friend against friend, brother against brother, and father against son. It cares not of your class, race or ethnicity it will sweep you into its midst's like a tidal wave. War has left him and his fellow soldiers void of sentiment. A pair of well made knee high leather boots begins to takes priority to human life. Paul also grows to appreciate the fact that the people he is trying to kill are no different to him, the only thing that bars their friendship is the fabric of their uniform. "It is strange to see these enemies of ours so close up. They have faces…"(10). War consumes a generation, a generation of lawyers, teachers and farmers. There is but little good to be found in war but Paul becomes Remarque's symbol for hope. If one man, one solider, can grasp the senselessness of war then perhaps more and more men will come to this realization until we live in a world eradicated of violent conflict.

George Orwell's seemingly innocent novel Animal Farm, is a parallel to the rise and fall of the totalitarian Soviet state and any other totalitarian state for that matter. At first glance this novel seems to be nothing but a child's tale but when put under close speculation it becomes more then obvious that the happenings of the Manor Farm are more then mere child's tales. The rise of the pig Napoleon to dictator is almost identical to Joseph Stalin's rise in Russia. Orwell uses this book to speak out against the trepidation and oppression that is the backbone of a totalitarian state. As Napoleon rises to power, the farm continues to take turns for the worse. The secret codes set up by the farms founding father are

Research Paper on Funds and Banking

What's OTC?

More than the Counter (OTC) is a industry for securities that are not listed on

an exchange. Security orders are finalized via telephone and a

computer network that connects dealers. As conversely on the NYSE, which

is an auction market, the OTC is a negotiated market. OTC dealers may

either act as principals or agents for customers. The NASD regulates the

OTC market. OTC stock prices are listed daily in newspapers, beside the

National Market Procedure stocks listed individually inside sleep from the OTC

market. The OTC industry is a primary market for bonds. The OTC market is self-regulated by members pertaining towards National

Association of Securities Dealers (NASD). The marketplace comprises of hundreds

of brokers and dealers tied jointly by the National Association of

Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (NASDAQ) system. NASDAQ acts as a

principal clearinghouse for trades. It lists thousands of OTC stocks and some

non-OTC problems that trade on so-called pink or yellow sheets. Companies

not on a NASDAQ program could be intimately held, could be very good quality

firms, even so they are able to also might be disaster-prone penny stock companies.Investors should be conscious of price differences among stocks on

registered exchanges and stocks on the OTC. OTC stocks have 2 prices,

the bid, that's the invest in cost and the ask, which is the selling

price. The bid price is usually up to 10 to 15 percent higher than the

ask price. This "bid/ask spread" is a commission that goes to the

broker/dealer. You buy at the asked price, which is higher cost and sell

at the bid, that's the lower price. The difference goes to the

broker-dealer, the marketplace maker to your stock. Essay college writing.

Such as NOT-SO-BIG business may perhaps have a bid of 5 and ask of 4 5/8. If

you bought 4000 shares, the commission would be 3/8 times 4,000, or $1500.

You will not see the $1500 commission charge on your order but the broker

or market maker is creating the money on the transaction. If you have been to at

as soon as market your 4,000 shares, the broker would pay you 4,000 x 4 5/8, or

$18,500. The $1500 has gone straight into your broker's pocket. However,

they'll claim they didn't charge you a commission. Smaller stocks on the OTC

markets typically move up or down in costs faster than larger companies.

Nonetheless, by reason of broad spreads, a trading strategy to take

rewards on the cost moves may possibly generate more commissions to your broker

than profits for you. Penny stock companies typically toll excessive

commissions. For instance, the SEC reported a brokerage that sold a

client $25,000 in stock and created a $12,500 commission.

Market risk

Market risk pertains towards the risk of publicly traded securities, where

informed and uninformed decisions consume place, thereby increasing the

uncertainty. Exactly where the uncertainty or the risk pertaining on the capital

markets are concerned, 1 with the strategy to reduce these kinds of risk is

spreading the risk or diversifying. This strategy spreads the overall

risk, so in turn, the investor doesn't end up in doldrums. Another

strategy to reduce the marketplace risk is by managing it via buying of

national securities in capital markets, wherever the cost fluctuation is

lowest as these securities are backed and secured by the government.

Another thing that contributes to your relationship for your demand for

income and also the changes in the interest rates is the asset demand for the

money. In general, a well-constructed portfolio may possibly desire to contain low risk investments along with riskier ventures. But it is not in general

advisable to maintain M1 (currency or checking deposits). The reason is that

another assets, for example the federal government securities or safe funds market mutual income are just as safe asM1 and have greater interest rates. Thus the transaction dollars is dominated asset as other assets are both safe

but have higher yields. Thus the overall risk of capital markets can

either be diversified or reduced by the strategies outlined above. Write my paper.

Our topic is on friction and what it is. So what is friction? Friction is the "evil" of all motion. No matter which direction an object moves in, friction will pull it the other way. Move something right, friction pulls it left. Move something up, friction pulls it down.

Friction depends partly on the smoothness of the contacting surfaces, a greater force being needed to move two surfaces past one another if they are rough than if they are smooth. Although two objects might look smooth, microscopically, they're very rough and jagged. However, friction decreases with smoothness only to a certain degree. Friction actually increases between two extremely smooth surfaces because of increased attractive electrostatic forces between their atoms. Friction does not depend on the amount of surface area that are in contact between the moving bodies or on the relative speed of the bodies. What it does depend on though, is the magnitude of the forces holding the two bodies together. When a body is moving over a horizontal surface, it presses down against the surface with a force equal to its weight. An increase in the weight of the body creates more resistance, so there is more friction.

Friction is not all bad. It has a lot do with life as we know it on Earth. Without friction, we wouldn't be able to do a lot of the things that we need to do. So why do we need friction? It's friction that enables us to walk, among other things. Friction is what keeps one foot planted on the ground as the other one steps forward. Otherwise, without friction, the shift in weight would cause us to slide around. Also most braking systems use friction as their main component. When you squeeze the brakes on a 10-speed bike, a small rubber brake is pressed against both sides of the bike tire. The friction of the brake pad against the wheel causes the rotation of the wheel to slow down to a stop.

There are two types of friction, "static friction" and "kinetic friction". Static friction is the frictional force that is created when trying to put an object into motion when it is at rest. Kinetic friction is the frictional force that tends to slow a body down when it is in motion. In most cases, static friction is greater than kinetic friction. The force do to kinetic friction is generally proportional to the force applied. In that case, a "coefficient of friction" is the ratio of frictional force to the normal force on the object. Here is an example for kinetic friction I need to move a big cardboard box full of books from my garage to my car, which is on the driveway. I decide its easier to push the box than to pick it up. It works pretty well when I am on my garage floor. But when I get to the driveway, I have some problems. The box is really hard to push because the cement is so rough. I come up with an easy solution -- I decide to take some books out of the box. Now, I can make it to my car. Here is an example of static friction I decide to put twice as many books into my box, making it twice as heavy. This time, I can hardly make the box start moving, so I really have to lean into it. Once I finally get it to start moving, though, its not as hard to push.

The Women that Influenced Ernest Hemingway's Writing

Ernest Hemingway was born on July 1, 18 at his grandfather's home in Oak Park, Chicago. He was the oldest male of six children. With such a large family, Ed and Grace Hemingway ran a strict household, but they did allow their children to enjoy themselves. Ernest loved the outdoors. Him and his father found themselves at Bear Lake many times throughout the early years of Ernest's life, but as he got older, Ernest became more of a ladies man. Ernest was married four times and rejected once by an older woman. These five women were the reason for most of Ernest Hemingway's literature. (Hulse)

In 1, Ernest Hemingway wrote "his first major commercial success," A Farewell to Arms (Flora 180). This novel is about a wounded World War I soldier that had an affair with his nurse. Hemingway wrote this novel eleven years after meeting his first true love, Agnes Von Kurowsky. Hemingway fell in love with Agnes while he was under her care at the Milan Red Cross hospital. Despite the fact that they saw each other everyday, Agnes wrote Hemingway daily. She called him "'Kid' and herself 'Mrs. Kid' and kept a picture of him in her pocket," (Hulse 10). Agnes did like Hemingway, but she did not let herself fall in love with him because she was committed to nursing and she felt as if the "'wartime' romance would not last," (Hulse 10). When Agnes left Milan, they wrote each other three or four times a day, but when they reunited, Agnes "persuaded Hemingway to return to his home," (Hulse 11). She had made him believe that in two years they would get married, but then she sent him a "rejection letter," (Hulse 11). Because of all of these events, Hemingway wrote Three Stories and Ten Poems, a series of stories about the love and rejection of his first true love.

In 11, Ernest Hemingway married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. The couple shortly moved to Paris to look for work. They sent letters home telling their families about the lovely place that they were living in, but in reality, it was small and not very clean. Hemingway decided to start writing. The couple lived off of Hadley's trust fund; this allowed them to travel too. Hemingway focused some of his literature on their trips to other countries, for instance, The Sun Also Rise focuses on his and Hadleys' trip to Spain. He also wrote The Torrents of Spring, another piece about their traveling adventures together. By the time Hemingway's first son was born, he was a full time author. Hemingway's marriage to Hadley did not last but five years. He had an affair with an editor named Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway was remorseful for what he had done, so he dedicated The Sun Also Rises to Hadley and his son, John. "It was, he said, the least he could do," (Hulse 14). This was Hemingway's first affair, but little did he know that he would have quit a few during his lifetime. (Stephens).

Critical thinking is the process of actively listening and carefully questioning the facts, opinions, and views expressed by others. As a result, the critical thinker is able to come to an educated, defensible conclusion or decision.

To make a decision is to take action on a problem or to arrive at a conclusion based on facts learned by, not given to, the critical thinker. A decision can also become a belief by discovering your own personal truths through careful consideration and thought.

The authors Browne, Keeley, McCall, and Kaplan (001) of our e-text Critical Thinking Strategies in Decision Making describe critical thinking as the mastery of two learned skills. The first skill deals with the way we take information in, specifically the way we listen and read. The second skill is the art of asking penetrating questions that help identify fallacies and fuzzy logic. The authors define a decision as, "…your best and most reasonable answer, given the nature of the problem and the available information" (p.15).

Critical thinking and decision-making go hand in hand. A decision made without critical thinking is essentially a random guess or an unsubstantiated opinion and is of little value to anyone. Critical thinking without arriving at a decision or an answer only results in migraine headaches.
