The initial setting of the play's scenes is Athens under the reign of Theses and Hippolyta, who are themselves characters from ancient Greek mythology. But it must be understood that the "Athens" of A Midsummer Night's Dream is neither that of ancient Greece nor of its Renaissance counterpart, but an amalgamation of the former with the folk culture of Elizabethan England. After Act I, the play shifts to the "fairyland woods" and remains there through Acts II, III, and IV, returning to "Athens" in Act V for the concluding weddings and the performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe" by the uncouth, unskilled, but irrepressible company of Bottom and his fellow mechanicals.

Act I

Scene i: The play opens in the Athenian court of Theseus as he looks forward to wedding his bride, the former Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, some four days hence at the summer Solstice. The "blocking" character of the play arrives in the form of the aged Egeus, the father of Hermia. He wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius and he is vexed by her love for another Athenian youth, Lysander. Hermia refuses her father's demand, while both Lysander and Demetrius press their suits to Theseus. The wise Athenian ruler upholds the law as it stands: he first rules that Hermia must either follow her father's preference for Demetrius or remain unwed forever. But Theseus also gives Hermia and Lysander some time to accommodate themselves to his decision and then calls Egeus into a private, off-stage consultation. All the players leave save Lysander and Hermia, with the former uttering the famous sentiment that, "The course of true love never did run smooth" (I,i., l.134). Another Athenian maid, Helena arrives. She is both a (former) friend of Hermia and a rival for the affections of Demetrius, whom Hermia spurns but Helena loves. Hermia tries to assuage her friend's jealousy by revealing to Helena that she and Lysander plan to run away into the woods near Athens, leaving Demetrius free for Helena to pursue. Left alone on stage, Hermia tells us that she will attempt to gain Demetrius' favor by telling him about Hermia's plans and then following him into the woods. Thus, Lysander and Hermia are in love; Demetrius loves Hermia and rejects Helena; Helena nonetheless loves Demetrius and is jealous of her childhood friend, Hermia. This somewhat confusing arrangement is the premise for the play's comic proceedings in which the love of all four characters will be "redirected" by the magic of Puck at the behest of the Fairy King Oberon. (Jump to the text of Act I, scene i)

Scene ii: With the premises of the main plot out of the way, the play shifts to another, humbler section of Athens, the house of the carpenter Peter Quince. Along with several other tradesmen (Snug the joiner, Flute the bellow mender and, most comical of all, Bottom the weaver), these unschooled amateurs intend to stage a performance of the tragic love story Pyramus and Thisbe at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, with Bottom assigned the role of Pyramus. In an extremely funny scene in which the cast's inadequacies as playwrights/actors are acutely evident (Bottom wants to play Pyramus, Thisbe, and a lion to boot), the group agrees to rehearse their "surprise" play in the woods to which Lysander and Hermia have fled. (Jump to the text of Act I, scene ii)

Jim Ambrose, is a -year-old citizen of Monroe but he hasn't always lived here. I am going to let you know what it was like for a kid in the late 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Jim was born in Pasadena, California in 167. During the first few years of his life he spent his life moving around and living in different places. Finally in 175 he settled down in a low-income housing community which was run by FHA. In the interview Jim said, "Kind of like Habitat for Humanity." What he could remember of this life was that the community was very friendly and he would always be doing things with the other kids in the community.

Then in 178 Jim moved to Ohio where he would live at up until he graduated High School. In Ohio Jim lived in a nice trailer park compared to the ones of today. He spent most of his time inside sheltered from the rest of the world. During these times the economy was bad for low-income families. An exact quote that Jim gave me, "My mom cried when Ronald Regan won the Presidential Election." But when he wasn't at home he was hanging out with his friends at the park. Him and his friends didn't drink nor do drugs. In high school Jim was not considered a real popular kid so he said, "The peer pressure wasn't really bad." When he went to the park he would see the cheerleaders and the sports players smoking, drinking, and having sex. "I was a virgin until twenty-one," said Jim. He figured he could wait. In his junior year Jim became a peer counselor for his school. That was when the jocks started to show Jim with a little bit more respect. He stayed in this program in his junior and senior years of high school. Every few weeks he would go to peer counseling camps where he learned about teen sex, drugs, and alcohol. He said, "This was a very powerful experience and partly the reason he was a virgin until 1."

During his teenage years Jim's relationship with his parents wasn't very good. But when I asked him he said "I tended to get along better with my mom then my dad but she wasn't always there for me." His mom would spend most of the time sitting on the edge of the couch watching soap operas. Jim's dad wasn't much better because he was a truck driver and Jim wouldn't see him for weeks upon weeks. But this one time when Jim was Linus in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" after the show his dad came up and told him, "This made my week son." This of course shocked Jim because his dad hardly ever showed Jim any affection. But when his dad did show him any affection it was a surprise. Just before his dad died he told Jim's mother "I wished I had talked to Jim more." One of the bad moments Jim could remember was when Jim reared his fist back like he was going to hit his dad and Jim's dad clocked Jim with his fist and sent him clear through the wall into the bathroom from the living room. But this was just a rare moment.

So as you can tell as a kid Jim was raised in a low-income family who moved a lot. His dad wasn't around much and when he was he didn't show any affection to his kids. Jim's mom would just watch soap operas on the couch all day. But I think Jim turned out all right because he is a very kind and courteous person. He has a great job, teaches catechism, and is an assistant youth group leader.

The question that four theories of Political Elites attempts to answer is that "who...governs and to what ends?" Each political theory poses valid arguments on the topic of control and influence, even though all the theories vary from one to another these hold some similarities with each other. Theories from political thinkers such as Karl Marx, and his Marxist theory, CW. Mills and the idea of The Establishment, Max Weber and the theory of the Bureaucrats, and the Pluralist theory are the four theories of the Political Elite and though they seem to differ greatly there is still some room to spot similarities.

The Marxist theory, based on the teachings of Karl Marx, is centralized on the struggle of power between "capitalists and workers." It is the view that sees the ability to govern in respects to who holds control over the economy. The government, according to Marx, is "a piece of machinery," meant to, "express and give legal effect to the underlying class interests." In listening to the view one might assume that capitalists are the ones that govern this country, which might as well be true, yet this idea conflicts with the theory of Max Weber, a German historian and sociologist that seems to have views similar views with Marx but criticizes him for not including some other key points to complete a more accurate theory of elitism.

Max Weber spoke of the Bureaucrats as the ones that to govern and "operate government agencies from a day to day basis." The reason for Weber's criticism of the Marxist views is because of the emphasis Marx put on control over the economy and thus control on government. The view of Webber was that Marx had "neglected the dominant social and political fact of modern times. Webber viewed that complete control of the government had long since fallen into the hands of the bureaucratic agencies that specialized in the management of "contemporary affairs." Webber could also see certain advantages and disadvantages to having living in this bureaucratic state. He saw that rationality would be the driving force behind the decisions of the bureaucratic agencies, yet Webber also foresaw that the power of these agencies would eventually become too massive and "overpowering." The idea that there was only one actual governing force was an idea not adopted by CW. Mills as can be seen in his theory of the Establishment.

In CW Mills theory of the Establishment there are three main governing powers that be: corporate leaders, top military officers, and a small number of key political leaders. Mills believed that it was withing these forces that the major governing took place. The rationality that the entire country is controlled by a small faction of people is not an uncommon one many have believed in the ruling force an elite minority. Wilson argues that "Government is dominated by a few top leaders" these leaders which, he argues enjoy great advantages, wealth and prosperity, yet Wilson also argues a different point of view. He argues a pluralist theory in which Wilson states that it is not just a small factions that do the governing but a great network of people and institutions that involve practically every one.

Character is the combination of qualities or features that distinguishes one person, group or a thing from another. It is the description of persons attributes, traits or abilities.character of a person is adjuged only by observing keenly his intentions, inner feelings.Character is defined only to a particular person but society comprises of many people with diverse characterstics.Like every person has unique feature simillarly is the character exhibited by him.Hero is also a part of society and he might be admired not for good conduct rather than for different reasons. He might not always be lionized for his moral conduct or good deeds. Hence it is inappropriate to say that character of a hero resembles character of the whole society.

Hero in a society is said to be a person noted for special achievements in a particular field, person noted for feats of courage or for nobility especilally one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life for others sake .He might be idolized for his legendary performances in his field but need not be a good charactered, disciplined in his personal life.He might be illcharactered, false behaved in public but might excel in his profession. The best example to justify that character of an individual should not be considered as character of society is the role of former United States president Bill Clinton .He was very good in handling internal and external affairs of the nation. It was his ability as a leader that he was elected twice fot the persidency. However regarding to his personal life or his charcter, he had an illicit and illegal relation with one of his coworkers working along with him.If his character is taken as the attitude of the society, then all the officials are to be accused of having illegal relations with thier staff.

Simillarly many Roman emperors eventough were good at managing their kingdom, admistrating laws and strived for benefit of their citizens, their personal character was abnormal. They used to be very extravagent, irresponsible and unlawful towards their families.

However, the character of great people can influence others. Mother Teresa, who was very noble, kind hearted and very soft in her attitude was able to influence the society her her decent and good deeds. The influence was upto an extent that many others tried to follow her footsteps.

Choke

Robert Raphael Goodman

Choke is a documentary about Rickson (pronounced Hickson) Gracie and mixed martial arts. Rickson Gracie is a Brazilian fighter with a black belt in judo, karate, and jiu-jitsu. He held a record of more than 50 wins with no losses in mixed martial arts competition. In Choke they go into the training of Rickson and his previous matches. The main story though is the tournament he is to go in; where many believe he would have his first loss. Also there are two sub stories about two other fighters who will be in the tournament. After winning that match he got a few minutes to rest until he had to face Rickson. He ended up loosing, but after the match mentioned how he would be interested learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The other sub story is about Koichiro Kimura, a Greco Roman National wrestling champion. He had only participated in shoot fighting matches previously. This was his first time involved in a competition with the rules of Vale Tudo; he too would be involved in the tournament. He ended up losing in the first round to Tom Hayes, but got a second chance when Tom Hayes got injured and decided not to fight. He faced Wayne Emmons in a qualifying match; he beat Emmons by submission (choke), after the match

They go into the story of another fighter who is to be in the Japan Vale Tudo tournament named Tom Hayes. He is named Tom Hayes, a former football player and a kick boxer. He was trying to get enough money to be able to fund himself for lugging in the Olympics. He had a trainer who seemed very confident of him winning. Tom was a strong striker with a lot of power he ended up winning one match at the Japan Vale Tudo tournament. He beat Koichiro Kimura by submission (choke) in the first round of the tournament. But he ended up injuring his shoulder. He decided not to continue also considering his next match was Rickson, plus he had already gotten enough money for lugging.

The movie shows Rickson training with his brother Royler Gracie who is also in mixed martial arts competitions. He explains his form of jiu-jitsu, which in the martial arts circuits is known as Rickson Gracie jiu-jitsu. He is also shown training with his father Helio Gracie. They show his last match in his native Brazil against a fighter named Zulu. This was his last fight before going to Japan. He is the winner of the Japan Vale Tudo tournament which the movie focuses on. He wins the tournament by beating Yoshihisa Yamamoto by submission (choke), then Koichiro Kimura by submission (choke), finally Yuki Nakai by (choke).

This was a great documentary about mixed martial arts. I personally liked it, specially the matches. Another part that I liked was when Rickson is asked about a match between him and Tyson, he explains how he would beat him. Choke gives an inside view of the mixed martial arts lifestyle through Rickson, probably the best fighter. It also shows how Rickson only 5'10" and 185 lbs beat people way over 00 lbs. Choke also shows two man trying to reach the glory of beating Rickson. Please note that this sample paper on Choke is for your review only. "Angels Too Soon," that's what the children were called from the Our Lady of Angels school that died in a tragic fire. It was a cold and sunny morning on December 1, 158; this accident took the lives of three nuns and ninety-two innocent students. The documentary "Angels Too Soon," addresses the Our Lady of Angels tragic fire, it makes a contribution to the field of knowledge or to society in general, provides many authoritative sources, the information that was presented in the documentary was understandable and kept attention, the audio and visual components worked well with images that were presented, the documentary was cohesive with music, images, and narration. The field of knowledge contributes to the cause of the fire and how the community felt. Many authoritative sources appeared in the documentary such as Matt Plovanich, Irene Mordarski, Gerry Andreoli, and John Raymond. The information in the documentary was clear and understandable. "Angels Too Soon" also presented good audio/visual components, which gives the viewers a sense of reality toward the documentary. The documentary also gave cohesive elements of music, images, and narration.

The documentary makes a contribution to the field of knowledge and to society in general. On December 1, 158, it was the first day back from Thanksgiving break. A fire broke out in the basement of Our Lady of Angels Catholic School in Chicago. The school was a two-story structure built in 110 that was remodeled and additions were added to numerous times, while legally the building was in compliance with the fire safety laws. Our Lady of Angels did not have to comply with all fire safety guidelines due to the grandfathering clause in the 14 standards. Our Lady of Angels was not prepared for what was to happen in the future. The fire started in the northeast stairwell on that cold December afternoon in a cardboard trash drum. The fire burned undetected for about twenty minutes, gradually filling the stairwell with hot gases and smoke. The first floor landing of the school was equipped with heavy doors, which effectively blocked the fire and heat from entering the first floor hallway. The second floor landing had no doors; the fire climbed the stairwell consuming the landing. Our Lady of Angels Parish only had one fire escape, no smoke or heat detectors, no sprinklers, no fire restraint stairwells, and no alarm connected to the fire department. The interior of the building was made mostly of combustibles such as floors, doors, walls, and stairs all made of wood even the roof.

The documentary provides accurate and comprehensive information from authoritative sources. Matt Plovanich was one of the survivors that survived the tragic fire, he was 10-years-old in the fifth grade. Matt's class was the only class that had the fire escape, and Matt escaped before the class busted into flames. Matt escaped without injury only suffering smoke inhalation.

Another survivor is Gerry Andreoli, a 1-year-old eighth grader. Gerry was hospitalized until March of 15 after undergoing numerous skin graft operations. After these operations and Gerry was well, Gerry went to a local pool with his mom, children were getting out of the pool thinking that Gerry was contagious and on the side Gerry would hear his mom telling the children that it was a skin operation and it wasn't contagious.

True Team Work

There are many different pieces or facets that make up a successful team. In the world of business and education, teams and teamwork are becoming more prominent, but we have been surrounded by it for centuries in the idea of team sports. With the ever-changing chemistry of team members and coaching staff, especially when we think of the professional team, there is no such thing as a perfect team. And what works for one team may not work for another team. The eternal role of communication is therefore a crucial element in the preservation of the team. Thus, the success of the team is contingent on the quality of the communication.

Communication is key to all activities in life and functioning with other people. Communication is defined in the Webster Dictionary as the exchange of information by means of speaking, writing or using a common system of signs or behavior. If we do not communicate then it is very difficult to perform our jobs no matter the industry. The forms of communication vary, but the bottom line is that there is communication. People communicate verbally, by writing, sign language, music, body language and facial expressions. A successful team has at least one of these forms of communication, if not more. In Phil Jackson's book, Sacred Hoops, he reminisces about his early years with the Chicago Bulls. The team was having a problem because they relied too much on Michael Jordan to score, rebound and steal the ball. Once teams figured that out it became the Bull's weakness. The question then was, "How to open up the offense and make the other players more productive?..." (Jackson, 84). Early on Phil Jackson told his staff about "Red Holzman's [adage] that the sign of a great player was not how much he scored, but how much he lifted his teammates performance"(Jackson, 84). Michael Jordan was moved from shooting guard to point guard. As the point guard the hope was that Michael could spend more time creating scoring opportunities for his teammates rather than his teammates relying on him to score all the points. This idea's success was short lived and eventually collapsed because it did not have communication from all members of the team.

The next season, for the Bulls, Tex Winter was brought onto the scene. He is the mastermind of the triangle offense. The embodiment of the triangle was the integration of "mind and body, sport and spirit in a practical, down to earth form that anyone could learn. It was awareness in action" (Jackson, 87). The triangle is a system of out thinking the opponent and "moving in unison as a group and being acutely aware, at any given moment, of what is happening on the floor"(Jackson, 87). The triangle system is an example of quality communication in the form of physical and verbal communication. If done correctly, it is almost impossible to stop because there are no set plays and therefore no predictions on the part of the opponent (Jackson, 87). The reason this is a strong example of quality communication is two-fold. The team wasn't working as a team and the leaders realized that weakness. By definition, a team is made up of more than one person. A team is dependent on all of its members, not just one, to be successful. Each member of the team has a purpose and if there is a breakdown in communication then the team will not be successful.

How significant was Ho Chi Minh in the Vietnamese struggle against, and victory over the French?

Ho Chi Minh, the vital leader in Vietnam's fight for independence had an enormous impact on the struggle against, and victory over the French. His early influences and surroundings whilst growing up had a significant impact in shaping Ho's views on French colonisation, leading him to establish the Indo-Chinese Communist Party, (the ICP). Through his political involvement in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh became the founder of the Viet Minh, where he gained essential support, resulting in many of his successes. His ability to appeal to all Vietnamese people led to him being perceived as a patriot by the Vietnamese. As well as being respected by his people, Ho Chi Minh was able to skilfully manipulate the French through his "superior political manoeuvring" .

Ho Chi Minh was born in May 180 into a poor peasant family in Ngue An province. The particular region in which he was born was renowned as being the centre of resistance to French rule, where many rebellions occurred. Ho's father's strong rebellious view of the French colonising Vietnam had an enormous impact in shaping Ho's own opinion and view of the French. In 15, after arriving in Canton, Ho established the revolutionary youth league of Vietnam. This was the first significant step towards Ho's aspiration of a communist-governed Vietnam. However, as well as the Communists International (Comintern), there were other factions claiming to represent Communism in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh eventually brought together a new party of all the Communist groups, to form the ICP.

The founding of the ICP by Ho in 10 sparked a new era of the first serious challenges against French authority in Vietnam. As a result of the outbreak of World War in 1, the ICP were able to operate with more power through the relaxation of the French in Vietnam. However, this was soon overcome as French repression strengthened. Ho attained an important leadership role in the ICP focusing his efforts on the border of Southern China. His active role in establishing relationships with military leader Pham Van Dong and future military leader Vo Nguyen Giap demonstrate his clever insight to orchestrate a solid power base. These crucial relationships made Ho a nationally recognised figure, in effect giving him the ability to attain more power and authority in Vietnam. Whilst on the border of China Ho led the ICP in developing the Viet Minh. With the support of Pham Van Dong and Vo Nguyen Giap, the ICP, under Ho's leadership managed to gain the support of a huge number of men, with which no other Vietnamese political group could be compared. Throughout this time period it became apparent to Ho that in order to pursue his goal of independence the Viet Minh would have to seize power over Vietnam when Japan was defeated.

Chocolate sale or chocolate war?

The novel the 'Chocolate War' is described as being a novel simply about a chocolate sale, the correct answer is that this is novel, is more than that perhaps this book can be described as the war of the chocolate sale. Already from the opening page of this exclusive book, where an unremitting defence clobbers quarterback Jerry Renault, The Chocolate War is relentless in its portrayal of the vicious, sometimes violent world of high school. Through Jerry Renault, Robert Cormier who is the author of this book, thrusts us into the tormenting world of Trinity High, an all boys high school. The Chocolate War is not all about the school wide chocolate sale Brother Leon presented to Trinity. The sale is part of the war going on through the school, but even before the sale was put out, problems already were occurring. The theme in Trinity was always the students vs. the teachers. It then changed to the Vigils vs. the teachers, particularly talking about Archie Costello, head and assigner of the Vigils, and Brother Leon, assistant headmaster of Trinity. These conflicts already existed before Brother Leon gave the sale. The characters are guided by peer pressures and the desire to please (or displease) their teachers. All of this is just a piece of the war at Trinity.

The real chocolate war all started out just as Brother Leon announced and introduced the chocolate sale that all the students were supposed to participate in. Everyone was perfectly fine about the idea of the sale since it is held as one of the biggest fund-raisers all year to help the school. However, once Leon changed around the expectations of the sale, conflicts around the school began to form. This year, Brother Leon wants the entire school to sell up to 0,000 boxes of chocolate, which means every single student is needed to sell 50 boxes each. Some of the students were excited and motivated to sell their set of chocolates, while some only sold them because they feared Brother Leon. Many of the students did want to become victims of Brother Leon since they were all afraid of what he might do if they were not involved in the fund-raiser. They all knew about the unexplained failures Leon gives out to the students in his class. The reasons of these F's are usually something that is related to the sale.

Archie Costello came up with a clever, but yet of cruel, idea for an assignment about the chocolate sale. Everyone knew how serious Brother Leon was with the sale, sometimes even going a little overboard with it. Everyone is of course including Archie. He knew that Leon would just go out of his mind if a student at Trinity, just one little student, did not sell the chocolates. It seemed just like the greatest idea he came up with yet, except the difficult part was to find who would be capable and willing to do such a thing. He needed to find someone who was brave enough and that had the guts. Just about every student in Trinity was extremely frightened and intimidated by Leon; it did not take long for Archie to find the right person. His victim, Jerry Renault, 'the new kid on the block'. Jerry was to carry out the assignment of refusing to sell absolutely no chocolates for a certain amount of weeks. Once Archie saw how Renault never gave up on the football field, no matter how much he was being thrashed or even if he happened to be the smallest player out there, he knew Jerry was perfect for the position.

Euthanasia is the practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition by means of lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment. The history of euthanasia dates back for centuries, but it wasnt until 106 when the first bill to legalize euthanasia in America was introduced in the Ohio legislature. For several years, legislatures have been turning down bills aimed at the legalization of euthanasia in the United States. In 17, the Nebraska legislature voted down a bill legalizing voluntary active euthanasia in the U.S. Only two years later, the New York legislature rejected a bill that was also aimed at the legalization of euthanasia in the United States. In 11 the Washington State Initiative Bill legalizing voluntary euthanasia was narrowly defeated. (6) In 14, Oregon passed a law to allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs, but an injunction prevented it from taking effect.

As of today, euthanasia is illegal in almost every country. In fact, it is only legal in the state of Oregon and the Netherlands. These are the only two places in the world where laws specifically permit euthanasia or assisted suicide. Oregon permits assisted suicide while the Netherlands permits both euthanasia and assisted suicide. In 15, Australias northern territory approved a euthanasia bill which went into effect in 16, but it was overturned by the Australian Parliament in 17. Also, in 17, Columbias Supreme Court ruled that penalties for mercy killing should be removed.(4) This ruling will not go into effect though until guidelines are approved by the Columbian Congress.

In Belgium, lawmakers have agreed on the provisions of a key article in a draft proposal to legalize euthanasia. The proposed bill would not only allow doctors to euthanasia terminally- ill patients, but also those who are incurably ill with years left to live. (4) In Michigan, the assisted suicide ballot initiative was defeated due to television ads who are now shifting gears to focus on alternatives to assisted suicide such as hospice care. Advocates for assisted suicide in Michigan are releasing their own radio and television ads in attempt to counter the anti-proposal ads.

Many court cases have come out of the heated topic as well. While the first euthanasia case in Japan was in 14, it wasnt until 16 that the Nagayo Court created a criteria for lawful active euthanasia. The court concluded if six conditions could be fulfilled, a death should be admitted as lawful euthanasia. (6) In 176, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in the Karen Ann Quinlin case that she had the right through her family to refuse life-sustaining treatment. In 181, A Rotterdam court ruled on conditions under which aiding suicide and administering voluntary euthanasia will not be prosecuted. The Supreme Court of the Netherlands declared that voluntary euthanasia is acceptable subject to ten clearly defined conditions in 184, and in 1 the Netherlands passed a law which prevented doctors from being prosecuted when certain guidelines are followed. In 14, Oregon passed a law to allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs, but an injunction prevented it from taking effect. Also in 14, delegates from the National Peoples Congress in the Republic of China, proposed a law in support of euthanasia. (6) In 15, Australias Northern Territory Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill by Marshall Perron was instated which allowed euthanasia under careful controls. In 15, Singapore introduced a right- to-die law which was originally sought after not to legalize euthanasia but to give the terminally ill the right to make a living will.

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn these are the great yet true words from Joseph Addison. The author John Steinbeck was a man, who portrayed a nation during its worst period if time telling about the struggles of its people in Of Mice and Men, and in the novel The Pearl. Both stories were brilliantly written with the unique trademark of John Steinbeck. In the novel Of Mice and Men, the characters Lennie and George are two intellectuals of very different intelligence levels; who stumble upon a job at a ranch that got ruined by Lennie's innocence. The novel The Pearl is folklore of how much a mans life could be consumed by a beautiful stone thatll cause so much hatred and sorrow within him. John Steinbeck has designed his own writing style based thru his detailed descriptions, and brilliant technique of foreshadowing, symbolism, and as well figurative language, all in which that makes him a great writer.

The striking ability of John Steinbeck's foreshadowing in his books is remarkable. "`A mouse? A live mouse?' `Uh-uh jus' a dead mouse, George. I didn' kill it honest I found it dead.' " The killing of the mouse is the first example of foreshadowing in the story that foretells the tragedy at the end of the book. Eventually the object being killed grows from a small fragile mouse to a helpless woman (Steinbeck 1, pg.4). When Coyotito gets stung by the scorpion it gets the story going as well as foreshadows that Coyotito is going to die (Steinbeck ). "Jus' wanted to touch the dress, Gorge" This phrase repeated it self four times. This clued us in to the part where he killed Curley's wife (Steinbeck 1). The indirect suggestion of each of his books by the end makes one realize it all ties up together.

One of the greatest objects in the novels of John Steinbeck is symbolism; significance of objects, events or relationships that make a story a whole and by the end you realize it was all meant to happen. The outfit Kino to wears was white and as Kino was going to fight he took off his clothes. The color white represents the pureness and innocence of Kino; when he took it off he was stripped the last of his innocence. The pearl had taken the rest of it (Steinbeck ). "George unslug his bundle and dropped it gently on the bank `I aint sure its good water' he said `Look kinda scummy'… …Lennie dabbed his paw in the water… he admitted it doesn't seem to be running." The water not running and being "bad" was after Lennie touched it and polluted it. Also the river stopping symbolized how eventually his life was going to stop in this journey. Steinbeck used many symbols that can be taken as just simplistic and normal, however it has a deeper levels of symbolism.

The usage of figurative language in the story made the stories more attractive and alive. One of the most graphic parts in Of Mice and Men is when Lennie breaks Curley's wife's neck imagines her squirming, and fighting like there was no more air. "…the body flopped like a fish…" In a way that was her way of battling for her life but she couldn't the power to Lennie was too overwhelming (Steinbeck 1, pg. 1). "… slowly like a terrier…" There are many comparisons to animals linked to Lennie however the terrier describes him. He acts like an incompetent object, however when he gets scared he starts to attack and protect him self like his animal instincts tell him to (Steinbeck 1, pg ) "Lennie…creeping with bear like moves…" This physical description of is beast like figure, big and fearful look yet at the same time so clumsy (Steinbeck 1)The usage of figurative language in a novel makes us go beyond human characteristic and make us go to our primitive side.

Hello and my name is Abhishek Karmakar and I am 16 years old. I live in Shanghai and study in Shanghai American School. I am writing this letter to you about the banning of the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain.

I have found out that the school board has banned the study of this book. I am not happy with this because I think this a wonderful book and should be encouraged to read all over the world. It is a book about American literature written in the late 1800's. The book takes place during the mid 1800's and it is widely discouraged by some people due to the racial content it exposes. Mark Twain himself worked around the Mississippi river. He probably wrote this book during his experience in the river, so probably everything in the book is what he reflected on. Lots of African-American people have been offended by this book. They have not understood the book or they have not read the whole book. The novel is about a boy named Huckleberry Finn who runs away from his father and travels down the Mississippi river. He meets a runaway black slave, Jim, on the way and they both travel together.

In my opinion I think that this book is quite a good book. People say they are offended by the word "nigger" in this book. African-Americans read the first few chapters and then stop reading it. What these people don't understand is that Mark Twain had written this book a century ago. In that time it was normal for white people to call black people "niggers." Some critics also say that Mark Twain includes in this book some very rude and informal language. I think that this helps us students to really feel what life was like in those days, how people communicated, so in fact this is kind of a learning experience for me. It really shows me the way people communicated with each other and how the language has developed till today. I don't see why the school board or other people do not see this. A reporter states that "Eighth graders at New Haven's West Hills Middle School will not finish reading a great American novel this year." I think the school has done the right thing. I think we should study the novel but I don't think the school should teach the students as early as from grade eight. This is because I don't think the students are mature enough to read it at that time as a class. I think the novel should be taught at around grade ten and upwards. By this time the students will be mature enough and will be able to understand the book properly and not take it as a joke.

Shalon Bradford, an African-American junior studying in Decatur High School says she was "excited" to read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." She stopped reading it after the first two chapters. Her reaction was, "it's filled with the N-word and other racist remarks." I totally agree with her, but she is looking at it at a different view. She said that "several students in her English class at Decatur High School snickered and laughed at the word." In this situation it is totally unacceptable for mature students to be laughing at these kinds of issues. They should be punished and taught lessons, because laughing at the word it just being very racist and they are showing it to the class as well. If the teacher doesn't take any action against it then the school board should consider talking to the teacher. Dave Matthews, Bradford's English teacher says that "he acknowledges that the book has a 'raw edge' and that some of the language is offensive, but he said the positive value far outweighs the negative," which is quite true and I support his view.

Karl Marx made his opinions and beliefs very clear to the world. Through the Communist Manifesto, Marx makes numerous points about Marxism. He also describes his feelings about how the worker is seen and used by society. In the Communist Manifesto, Marx also speaks about what course he sees the dialectic taking.

Marx made four major points in the Manifesto. Historical materialism, class struggle, dialectic, and communists were those four major points. Historical materialism described people think and act was determined by the way in which they made their living. As a result a society's economic system made up its foundation. Also, according to Marx the driving force of history was what people went after for money (the economic change). Another major point was class struggle. Marx classified the two groups that society was broken down into as the bourgeoisie (the haves) and the proletariat (the have nots). Marx believed that political power is merely the organized power of one class for oppressing another. In the Manifesto Marx wrote "It […] has set up that single, unconscionable freedom- Free Trade. In one word for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation." Marx believed that the bourgeoisie made the honored careers of physicians, lawyers, etc. "into just its paid wage-laborers." The bourgeoisie couldn't exist unless it continuously improved the tools of production and everything that was related to the production. Every class struggle was actually a political struggle and the proletariat class was actually a revolutionary class. This was because the other classes would weaken and eventually fade away in modern history while the proletariat is "its special and essential product."

Another of Marx's main points was the dialectic. The dialectic was Hegel's idea that all things travel on a cycle of Anti Thesis against Thesis resulting in a synthesis. What this mean sis that something is challenged by its opposite. Hegel and Marx both believed that revolution was always going and never ended. The Communists were seen by Marx as the "Vanguard of the Proletariat," meaning the proletariat alone was unable to determine what needed to be done. That had to be told and led by the people who "understood the line of march." In addition, the communists were seen as a group that was separate from the general population. "The Communists fought for the attainment of the immediate aims, for the enforcement of the momentary interests of the working class; but in the movement of the present, they also represent and take care of the future of that movement."

Marx believed that the role of the worker was crucial. He felt that the worker was taken advantage of and seen as a piece of machinery. The family of the worker became the economic unit. Poor families must have had many children to make money. They had to provide social security because there was no pension. If a member of the family was hurt then the others had to keep working to bring in the money. "The class of laborers lived only so long as they could find work and who found work only so long as their labor increases capital." Those laborers had to sell themselves piecemeal (piece work) which meant the work was done one piece at a time. "There were commodities and consequently exposed to all the vicissitudes of competition." Marx wrote about how the work of the proletariats had lost all individual character. They became "appendages of the machine [….] The price of a commodity is equal to the price of production. In proportion, as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decreases." The worker was hired to do what was needed, and as soon as that work was done so was the worker. To sum it all up, Marx felt that the worker was seen just as a piece of equipment and society cared nothing for him (the worker).

Informal Essay on Angela's Ashes Angela's Ashes is a moving book full of poverty, suffering, and death that shows that no matter how difficult things seem, the hard tines can always be overcome. Angela and Malachy McCourt, both Irish, were married in America after a passionate night together that ended up producing their first son, Francis(or Frank as introduced to the reader). Later, the couple had another son, twins, and a daughter while living in a small apartment in New York. Margaret soon died and the family moved to Ireland where their lives were only worsened. Angela had two more children that lived, but the young twins died. Malachy was an alcoholic who rarely held a job and spent his wages at the pub instead of on his family. They were forced to beg for food and other necessities because relatives were cruel and selfish. This novel tells the tell of young Frank having to endure extreme poverty, starvation, and a broken family with strength and courage. He eventually raises enough money to go to America and break free from his depressing childhood. In my opinion, the theme of this book is that no matter how bad things seem to be, anyone can survive and become successful through perseverance and determination. For example, Frank grew up in just about the worst environment possible but was determined enough to get himself to America and eventually become the author of a Pulitzer Prize winning novel! Frank achieved his goals by taking any extra jobs that he could find and saving every penny possible until he could finally afford his passage to America. Because his father never brought home any money, Frank supported the family with what little wages he earned at his job and was determined to make a good life for himself, his brothers, and his poor mother. Frank learned to depend upon no one but himself and his determination to succeed won him a new life in America where he now lives happily married. I noticed numerous literary devices present throughout the book. One such device is the use of apostrophe. Apostrophe is used continuously when Frank speaks to the angel on the seventh step and also when he and his parents speak to the dead children such as Eugene, Oliver, and Margaret. The story is told from the point of view of Frank as he grows from a young boy of about three or four to a young man at nineteen. This point of view is especially effective because it shows how he feels about his experiences as he ages and how he felt at that exact time. His views change as he grows and his naivete vanishes. He becomes a stronger, smarter person with the reader following along. I also noticed frequent use of imagery. Frank describes his eyes when they are infected with "red and yellow oozing" out of them. Vivid images are also used to describe the putrid smells in their house next to the lavatory that was used by the entire street to empty their chamber pots. McCourt also chooses to write very often in the diction of the old Irish language. This word choice adds to the mood of the book and attempts to bring the reader into Ireland. The book is also packed with humor. For instance, when the boys were playing outside, McCourt said that the women stand because "all they do is take care of the children, clean the house, and cook" but the men sit because the spend their time "discussing the problems of the world and wondering what to do with the rest of the day"(107). This is a humorous, almost satirical look at the traditional male-female roles in a family. Humor is also used while Frank waits for the angel on the seventh step and his naivete as a young boy. McCourt's novel is filled with wonderful, descriptive images that help to shape his fascinating tale from poverty to success. Word Count 66 Please note that this sample paper on Angela Ashes is for your review only. The Cambodian Genocide

The Cambodian genocide is one of the most horrible and saddest genocide to date spanning form 175-178. As Cambodia gained there independence from France in 15 the country was controlled by prince Sihnaouk. In February of 16 America started to bomb Cambodia in secret. After a year of bombing a small time communist party the Khmer Rouge, started demonstrations in the large cities such as phon-phen. At that time the prince of Shanouk was visiting Paris, a pro-American general by the name of Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and joined the communist party of the Khmer rouge. War had struck Cambodia at this point. In April 170 Vietnamese and American troops invaded southeast Cambodia in the look for the Vietcong guerilla fighter in the rainforests of Cambodia. Lon Nol was proven to be not a well skilled military and political leader. Corruption worsened and Cambodians started believing that the country would be better of with the Khmer rouge and past prince sihnaouk. During that time the Khmer rouge was gaining power and falling away form their Vietnamese allies. Soon the Khmer rouge overthrew the over Lon Nol as he fled form the city April 1, 175. On April 17 the first Khmer troops entered the capital with their leader Pol Pot. They were welcomed with cheers and white flags. This was the start of the Cambodian genocide.

As Pol Pot realized his power now he immediately started his Khmer society. He started his society on an eight point program in his program he began the process of taking away all liberties of the people. He started to evacuate all people from all towns, abolish all markets, abolish currency, make monks grow rice, execute leaders of the Lon Nol regime, establish cooperatives throughout the country, dispose of the Vietnamese minority, and dispatch troops to the border mainly near Vietnam. as the Cambodian people were taken from their towns each person was told to write their last occupation so the Khmer could execute enemies and any intelligence that threatened them. Pol Pot wanted to make Cambodia a self-sufficient communist state and as make their revolution a pure one. Soon all printed material, private property, religion. And travel was forbidden. The people of Cambodia became totally black clothed slaves as the country was toiled with a wall of landmines surrounding the whole country. The men and women were separated and all put into the workforce digging canals, harvesting rice, as the children tended gardens. The workers were used from dawn to dusk even sometimes till the late hours of the night. Since the Khmer rouge had discarded of doctors and hospitals, treating the sick was done by untrained party officials or the way their ancestors had don it. This caused a great plague of death. From 177 to 178 the workforce had been severely cut by disease and malnutrition. Enemies of the state were sent to prisons and executed. The most famous of prisons was s-1 in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Prisoners were photographed on arrival at the prison and then tortured until they confessed their crime and then were executed.

The country could no longer control itself. Failure was upon them and they needed someone else to blame. The Khmer Rouge approached Vietnam as their new enemy. In early 177 Khmer raided Vietnamese territory and in late 177 heavy fighting broke out. The war was horrendous and Pol Pot was convinced that his army was infiltrated by spies from Vietnam. on Christmas day 178 0.00 Vietnamese and 18,000 dissident Cambodians battled along the border against 7,000 of the Khmer rouge. Phon Phen was recaptured in two weeks and the reaming army of the Khmer rouge fled to mountains to continue the fighting. The Cambodians before had ever-lasting hate toward the Vietnamese but now hailed them as saviors. During the Cambodian genocide 1.7 million people (0% of the population) lost their lives. This genocide could have maybe been prevent if the French had stayed in power but maybe not, history can not be taken back.

The question "safety is not related to how fast you go but how fast you stop" can not be answered without looking at the physics concepts involved. The answerer is not as clear cut as it may seem as factors of momentum, that is inertia in motion, inertia, mass, change in momentum, and impulse, all must be taken into account.

The first concept we must look at momentum. Momentum is inertia in motion, which can be found by multiplying mass and velocity. If you increase either mass or velocity, you will increase the momentum, we need to look at this as the faster you go the more momentum you have, and therefore the more dangerous you are, so speed is a danger, which is by no means a safe act.

The second important concept is the concept of impulse. Impulse changes momentum. Finding impulse is attained by multiplying force and time interval, change either of the two and the impulse is different. If you decelerate quickly you will have a smaller impulse, than a longer smoother deceleration. In the topic statement it states that it is not how fast you travel but how quickly you stop, if you were to travel at 60km.h-1 and stopped in 0m opposed to traveling at 100km.h-1 and stopping in the same distance, you would feel a shorter impulse, which makes the stopping 'rougher.'

Inertia is another point that must be closely examined. Inertia is the tendency for a body to preserve its current state of motion, unless acted upon by an external force. This means things tend to do what they are already doing. For an example if you are traveling at 60km.h-1 and stopped over 0m your body would want to keep moving in the direction that it was doing so. If you stopped again over the same distance but from 100km.h-1 then you would experience a greater force of inertia, as your body would be wanting to stay moving at 100km as opposed to 60km in the other case. The faster you go the more inertia you have so you would be more likely to become injured the faster you go, especially if you are not wearing a seatbelt.

To agree or disagree with the topic statement is difficult. In theory the statement 'Safety is not related to how fast you go but how fast you stop,' is correct, but then communism works in theory. In reality all factors must be considered, which the statement obviously doesn't cover. Yes if you can slow down in the same amount of time, you would be safer, however it doesn't take into consideration the effects on the driver. Human bodies are not designed to withstand the effect of dramatic deceleration, seatbelts can be useful, however it leaves vital areas like the neck unprotected, and whiplash can cause severe neck, and bone injuries. What happens if you stop very suddenly from a high speed and you're not wearing a seatbelt, you will stay in motion until something slows you down, which could be your windscreen, or a brick wall, and the effects are going to become worse the faster you travel. Put simply no I don't think that safety is related to how fast you stop as opposed to how fast you are traveling.

Everyone would have their opinions on the topic sentence, and I think that the statement shows us the black and white, which looks good on the surface, but when examined closely has many flaws, as proven above. We must look at all aspects of physics involved and then make a decision, on weather or not the statement is true or not. Personally it has some truths to it, and it is correct to an extent but its flaws far outweigh the few truths to it.Please note that this sample paper on Physics-The Physics of Stopping is for your review only. How I Can Change My Environmental Health

The most effective thing I can do for my environment is recycle. Anyone is capable of recycling. There are many recycling centers across the nation where people are able to take trash to be recycled. Some places might pay you a small amount for recycling trash.

Unbroken glass containers can be recycled. Clear are the most valuable and lids can go with metal. Tableware, ceramics, windows, light bulbs, and mirrors are different types of glass that can be recycled. Broken glass is hard to sort and that is why unbroken glass is preferred. The bad news is that some places only accept bottle glass and ceramics contaminate glass. Glass is color sorted for recycling.

Clean dry newspapers and newspaper inserts can be recycled as well as rubber bands, plastic bags, product samples. Make sure there is no water, dirt, mold or other contamination. Pack newspapers tightly in large brown grocery sacks or tie with natural twine and keep them dry.

Empty metal cans, caps, lids, bands and foil full cans, spray cans unless instructed, such as cans with paint or hazardous waste. Metals can be recycled again and again by the metal being melted down and reconstructed to its new form.

Plastic stamped with a #1 or # on the bottom can be recycled. The bad news is that some areas only accept clear plastic or certain shapes. Plastic types # through #7 are more recyclable plastics. Caps are usually a different type from the bottle. If it is unmarked then throw it away with regular trash because even a small amount of the wrong type of plastic can ruin a melt. Much plastic collected for recycling is actually land filled. Plastic bags marked # or #4 are usually from many grocery stores take bags. Usually recycling unmarked plastic bags or reuse bags can have a negative net impact.

Mixed paper such as junk mail, magazines, photocopies, computer printouts, cereal/shoe boxes, stickers, napkins, tissues, waxed paper, milk cartons, carbon paper, laminated paper (fast food wraps, some food bags, drink boxes, foil), neon paper, thermal fax paper can all be recycled. Some places also take cardboard and phone books. Paper fiber can be recycled about seven times before it gets too small. Plastic window envelopes are also recyclable. Do not recycle dirty or food stained paper

Scrap aluminum such as lawn chairs, window frames, pots, and metal parts attracted to magnets can be recycled. There is no need to remove labels or bands from cans or bottles but, clean them to prevent odors. Do not recycle containers with traces of hazardous materials. Motor oil should never be dumped into storm drains. Automotive batteries and sealed lead/gel-cell batteries can be taken to an automotive or security dealer for recycling or to trade in. Rechargeable batteries from cordless phone, camcorders, shavers, portable appliances, and computers can be recycled. Throw alkaline and heavy duty batteries in trash unless prohibited. Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries contain toxins and should be recycled properly. Laser/Ink printer cartridges are recyclable. Household toxics (paints, oils, solvents, pesticides, cleaners) should be recycled. Computers, eyeglasses, household goods can be donated to charity or given to a repair shop because they are not recyclable.

Unless you buy recycled products, you are not recycling. I have as well as many others have used some product that I mentioned and I will begin my recycling today. We must all strive to share benefits and burdens resulting from the use of the environment. Furthermore, because in many cases environmental degradation is long-term and cumulative, precautionary policies guided by considerations of equity must be implemented to safeguard the rights of future generations. "The world is out of joint, certainly and it will take powerful movement to manipulate it all back again." Bertholt Brecht. This very famous quote by Bertholt Brecht was remembered throughout the world for the world was in war. Individuals in the world were going through life and social change. Bertholt Brecht was one of the chief innovators of modern theatrical techniques and he was both a poet and playwright. His epic theatrical creations developed drama as a forum for social and idealistic causes. Brecht's imagination, artistic genius, and social views distinguish his work and life. Eugene Bertholt Brecht was born February 10, 188 in Augsburg, Germany. Brecht was influenced by a variety of selections including Chinese, Japanese and Indian theatre, the Elizabethans (especially Shakespeare), Greek tragedy and many more. In the early 10's, Europe was a cauldron of social and political unrest. Literature sought not to provide accurate images, but it provoked change, encouraged thought and evaluation. Bertholt Brecht attempted to highlight the undeniable triumph of reason and knowledge to emphasise victory over authoritarian oppression.

The foundations of world literature have always been based on the attitudes and values of society. Authors, playwrights and poets are influenced fundamentally by the ideologies around them which brought all of Brecht's plays to a form of social and political instruction. Bertholt Brecht did not consider drama to be a form of entertainment; however he instead portrayed important images to the people of Europe, showing them the potential for social, political and economic change. Brecht being a Marxist, he grew up in an ordinary German family; saw the progress of several regimes of European history, including the accedence of Adolf Hitler and the effects of government's ideology on people. These encounters brought Brecht to become a respected social commentator and he questioned the ideologies and views of the government. In one of Brecht's play The Life of Galileo, the ideologies were prevalent to government in Europe at the time.

It's not difficult to realise why his texts were banned from Germany not long after they became widely read. His support for the empowerment of the common man and those marginalised in society is clear, and his endorsement of socialism is outright. Rejecting the methods of traditional realistic drama, Brecht preferred a loose narrative form in which he used distancing devices to prevent the spectator from identifying with the characters on stage. Brechts one commercial success was The Threepenny Opera, a play still subject to occasional revival. Based on John Gays The Beggars Opera, it portrays the poor of London, living lives that are nasty, brutish, squalid, and short. Brechts intention was to display the fundamentally evil nature of society, but his largely bourgeois audience merely took it as a reasonably accurate portrayal of impoverished existence, never questioning their own role in sustaining poverty, perhaps even feeling their ambivalent attitude towards the oppressed reinforced by the play. Brecht loathed this reaction, feeling that the play was completely misunderstood, and vowed not to repeat his mistake in creating something that the bourgeoisie society could like.

Many of Bertholt Brechts first plays were written in Germany during the 10s; however he was not widely known until much later. Eventually his theories of stage presentation exerted more influence on the course of mid-century theatre in the West than did those of any other individuals. Brechts earliest work was heavily influenced by German Expressionism, but it was his preoccupation with Marxism and the idea that man and society could be intellectually analysed. This then led him to develop his theory of epic theatre. Brecht believed that theatre should appeal not to the spectators feelings but to his reason. While still providing entertainment, it should be strongly didactic and capable of provoking social change. In the Realistic theatre of illusion, he argued, the spectator tended to identify with the characters on stage and become emotionally involved with them rather than being stirred to think about his own life.

The Islamic Empires during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were flourishing. The time period marked the pinnacle of Islamic power and culture. Two of these major Islamic empires were the Safavids and the Ottomans. Both empires had great claims of land to their names, and both competed for dominance in the Islamic world. However, not long before the end of the time period, both empires experienced great declines in their cultural and monetary wealth. Over time both empires' governments weakened due to poor leadership and two-front wars. And the growth of diversity led towards inner empire struggle. All these factors contributed to the fall of the Safavid and Ottoman Empires. The Ottoman and Safavid Empires were some of the greatest empires of their time but lacked the proper organization needed for such powerful empires to survive.

Great leaders such as Suleyman of the Ottomans and Shah Abbas I of the Safavids built up their empires up to great world powers. They did this by using their great intelligence and decision-making skills, but over time both the Safavid and Ottoman Empires weakened due to poor leadership and government organization. Corruption grew into society under the new weaker rulers. Under Selim II (Ottoman Emperor) Suleyman's strict policies on devshirme (an elite provincial slave levy) were slackened. After the slackening of the laws, parents of Muslim boys could buy their way into the devshirme and current members of the devshirme were now allowed to marry. This no longer created the total loyalty to the state and created a new corruption in the Empire's army and bureaucracy. The same leadership mistakes showed up in the Safavid's empire as well. Under the rule of Shah Abbas II, the Safavid empire became much more liberal. Shah Abbas II gave people more religious freedom and was more lenient with his subjects. No longer was there great loyalty towards the empire and ideas became more radical. A new corruption in the military and government began to show up with this new leniency, just as it had with the Ottomans. These newer and lesser leaders guided their empires' downhill and were directly responsible for their empires' downfall.

Two-front wars weakened the resources and military needed to run such vast empires. The Ottomans were busy fighting the Hapsburgs in the west and the Safavids in the east. The Ottomans tried a second raid on Vienna to restore their empires to fame but failed horribly. They also experienced a slew of disastrous battle losses to the Hapsburgs and the Russians costing them the Crimea. At this time the Ottoman army was nearly exhausted and now the Europeans in the west and the Russians in the north boxed in their empire. At this point, The Ottomans no longer had the resources to take on their Shi'ite foes of the East. This slowed the empires' external trade which resulted in a lack of funding needed to run such an expensive empire. Similar two-front wars also contributed to the decline of the Safavid Empire. The Safavids were fighting the Ottomans in the west and the Uzbeks in the north. During the reign of Selim II much territory was lost to the Ottomans and Uzbeks. These wars devastated the Safavid army and these lands were not regained for decades. Without a strong army the Safavids struggled to keep their empire intact. Both empires were drained by two-front wars and were not able to fully recover, contributing to their downfalls.

Both Empires experienced a growing population and diversity leading to inner-empire struggle and conflict. Such struggles also brought about major social changes Many Jews fled to the Ottoman Empire after being banned from Spain. The Jews brought many social and religious ideas with them that hurt the empire. Also many new Christians moved into the Empire. With Jews, Christians and Muslims all in one country much discrimination broke out along with strained relationships. Non-Muslims began controlling the wealth leading to their monopolization of foreign trade hurting the Muslims' resources. No longer was the Ottoman Empire unified and strong. Although it happened differently in the Safavid Empire many of the same consequences arose. A new wave of conservative Shi'ite ulamas took power. They emphasized their own authority over the ruler and persecuted religious minorities and Sunni Muslims. Again a group came to power but failed to unite a diversifying empire, leading to conflict. Uniting a diverse was necessary for both empires survival.
